How to deal with Lau?

What really gets me with Lau is his okizeme game. When I'm knocked to the ground, I really have no idea how to get up. If I recover from a fall and roll sideways, I usually get the PPP2K which results in me getting hit by the low sweep and finding myself in the knocked down position again. If I try to rise in place, I get so many things coming at me, a barrage of PP strings, aP or 2P to grab, or a downed attack.

Also, sidestepping is almost impossible on Lau because of his many arching kicks and punches. Sidestepping his PP strings is usually a guaranteed kick to the face with Jeffry. My matches with Lau usually end up with me poking with P's and 2P's until I can land a grab. I also always vary my grabs because I don't want any throw escapes. 2K+G is another way I try to start me offense.

I just feel that Lau throws Jeffry's evasive game right out the window most of the time.

Well, I play Lau and I have to say I've had limited luck against patient or experienced Jeffrys. SweeptheLeg[/size] pretty well smashed me a couple weeks ago with his up and coming Jeffry by keeping the pressure on and applying the maximum hurt whenever he had any advantage.

I think Lau is a lot more linear than he may seem. You might want to bone up on your crumples and crazy knee combos. I seem to recall they were devastating to my Lau.

Of course. I don't think my game is all that but if you would like to spar my gamertag is "Dark Timmy". PM me and we can set up some sessions and I'll walk you through what I know.

    -2P to regain advantage
-4KP is your friend in tight situations!
-If Lau consistently spams PPP2K against you, just guard the string. If you successfully guard the 2K, you have guaranteed punishment options, the most deadly being:

    6K > P > 43P+K > 6K

    - A simple PK does solid damage and executes very quickly -- you can use it to continue initiative on small advantages
    - Back dash when Lau blocks your attacks at distance and try things like 44 or 11 > 3P (a buffer for 43P)
    - At mid-range, 3K (CH) > 2K+G is amazing

Jeff is my secondary so I'm by no means an expert with him, but I've found these to be effective tools against Lau and many other characters as well. I would also recommending checking Lau's frame data, and seeing what kind of advantage you have after guarding his attacks.

    At +12, PK.

    At +14, 4KP.

    At +16, 3PP > 66PP

    At +17, 6K.

That knowledge is very powerful when applied conscientiously. Good luck, and take Tim up on his session offer! It'll really help you methinks. I'm sure some other Jeffs have advice as well, so let's hear it.

Thanks for the tips sweep. I'll definitely take you up on that offer Shiznittles. I think I actually played you one time. My gamertag is Waffle Stompers.

Another little Lau'sey tip is that he only has a few low attacks despite the visual look of most.

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif - low punch shiz - standard stuff

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif - low punch stuff

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif - the beginning of the dreaded and overused /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif string

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif - the first of another nice string /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif - you know this by now, part of a punch string you should see coming a mile away. Personally, I think Lau's best option most of the time is /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif if he's going to do that sort of nonsense but that's just me. I am pretty sure any of his /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif strings are punishable with a somewhat severe beating.

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif - this little daddy-o shows its head now and then and when it does it will surprise you with a stagger. Learn what this move looks like as it approaches because it seems like Lau is way out in left field stretching his arms and then *wham* you're getting floated for crazy damage.

Finally there's also the backturned /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif from /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif and after moves like /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif

So - check this out. All that other wacky stuff like those leaps /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif. All that Kokei stuff like /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif...

Those are all mid's or highs. Basically if you know what's coming and the timing you've got half the battle(I know that is no small feat but allow me to continue).

It's really, really tempting to let Lau have some space but I'm finding that at a distance a lot of flinch test-moves from an opponent give me enough of an advantage to do a /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif combo. That does a nice chunk of damage and a few of those tend to force to opponent to stand where I throw them.

What was great about Sweep was he didn't let me set up much and moved in aggressively and with a knowledge of Lau's timing (again, this does take practice and some studying but the results were devastating). I think we all know how it works to throw yourself at Lau's Cuisinart-like attack patterns - you get chewed.

I wish I could record Sweep's against me so you can see the utter devastation Jeffry can wreak havok upon my sad ass Lau.

    Let's practice if you can!

With low ranked (up to 4th dan) Lau (and Lei) there is very simple way to win.

A lot of Lau players try to attack in disadvantage.
Just /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif them and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif->/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif after that. Most of the time we can /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/u.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gifthem when they are grounded.

With worse players do /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif instead of /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif. Over half of energy in one easy action.

As a low ranked Lau player I can assure you the above strategy works.

Watch out for Lau's that do not succumb to this as they are likely to be a magnitude or order tougher to beat.

I have noticed that /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif tends to work online more than off due to little laggy delays. I know there are easy ways to beat Lau out of that but sometimes he can lay it on and it *seems* nigh unbeatable. Something like: /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif > /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/u.gif//forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif is a nice online Lau setup. If Lau is not punched or grabbed by the third punch his options open up a little. Mid ranged strikes will hit him from what I can tell. I don't know Jeffry well so maybe someone knows what the best ones are.

Off line I have not had that kind of luck doing basic stuff and consistently winning.
