what specs do you guys think a machine that can handle doom3 , unreal T 2003 perfectly would look like, im thinking of getting the best thing out there that can handle those games nicely. throw some specs.... and how much do you think this would cost.

Since Doom 3 ain't coming out till Winter-2003, I'd wait for the Geforce 5 Ti to get maximum performance from those games.

    >> Western Digital WD800JB is a nice drive, if that's what you're getting /versus/images/icons/smile.gif Well, as long as you're not getting an IBM HDD...

-Creative cambrige SoundWorks Desk Top Theater 5.1Inspire 5300 Surround Sound System

    >> I'd take a Logitech Z-560 or Klipsch 5.1, personally...

Everything else is pretty sweet, though!

I don't know about optimal h/w config for Doom3 since that's aways away, but for UT2003, the benchmarks are already out. You can pretty much build a PC from scratch for around $1,000:

    http://www.sharkyextreme.com/guides/MVGSBG/article.php/1380991

And if you have leftover components from your current PC, and have some cash to spare, I'd:
    1. Buy a SkyHawk aluminum case ($90) instead of the Antec
    2. Overclock the P4 1.6Ghz by 50% (the Northwood CPUs are notoriously easy to o/c)
    3. Grab an 80GB WD800JB HDD (special edition - has 8MB cache) for $130 instead of the Maxtor
    4. Get a GeForce 4 Ti 4400 instead of 4200
    5. Buy a SB Audigy instead of the crappy SBLive (which sucks up too many CPU cycles)
    6. Get a nice 19" monitor instead of 17"

And that will run UT2003 at 1024x768, High Detail at 80FPS outdoors and 140FPS indoors.

Just installed a Ti4600 in my machine. Now I realize how sucky ATI is. The drivers are just terrible, it's so common to crash every 10 min. Now the 8500DV is on ebay. cya!
1280x1024 4xAA NWN is sweet, can't really tell the AA difference and can barely read the text.. but that's OKay!

ti4600 is extremely overpriced for the performance. It's very easy to overclock a ti4200 to ti4600 performance. sooooo.... i wouldn't buy a ti4600.

Ti4600 is way way overpriced. For the bang of the buck you can't beat the Ti4200. people buy the 4600 for the "I only want the best" attitude, which I'd admit could be seen as stupid... but...
Anyways, I'm not sure it's so easy to overclock any 4200 to a performance level of a ti4600 though. You'll get close with the right card (MSI) or Ram, but a 4600 can be bumped up to 330/700 and leave you in the dust.. suckaa.. Ops.. sorry...

Well, if your company pays for your computer and its accessories, by all means the NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4600 card kicks ass on the mac! It does wonders for our 3D rendering software and I can't wait to get my second card for the PC =P I love toys =D
