hey, the solution fei gave works, but I bet you're not eager to fool with command line stuff. A more user friendly way that you can fool with wmv movies is this:

    click here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/default.asp

and in the dropdown box, choose windows media encoder. In the second dropdown choose version 7.1. Then click download now.
You'll get a fairly hefty installation package. Run it, follow the steps to install, then run windows media encoder (the exact thing you need to run is called wmenc.exe .. although you should have a shortcut on the start menu for it)

Now to fool with your wmv,
    1. skip any tips or wizards media encoder tries to put you through,
    2. from the main menu click Session ---> New. From there you'll get a popup.
    3. click the "New" button at the bottom. On the next window click the dropdown next to "Video" and go down to "Browse for file..."
    4. Locate your movie (you can mess with .wmv, .asf, or .avi movies) and click OK. Don't worry about any of the other tabs/dropdowns.
    5. You'll be back at the previous window. Click the "Profile" tab at the top of it. This is where your real encoding tricks take place. You have a dropdown with like 20-30 options and these options will encode your movie at different levels of quality and file size. I like the option "High motion video for broadband NTSC (768 kbps)" ... this gives little or no sacrifice in quality when converting avi's or wmv's to something smaller. If you're not worried about quality so much, the default option (WM8 video for cable/DSL etc etc) is ok.
    6. Now click the tab at the top that says "Output" and uncheck the first box (broadcast) and check the second box (archive to file). Click "Browse" to give the file a name and specify the directory you want to save it in.
    7. Click ok, then click Start. A few minutes later you'll have a (Hopefully smaller) WMV.

... there, a nice how-to in just 7463435325 simple steps.

Ah, but wmv8 has a better compression ratio! /versus/images/icons/tongue.gif

Plus I made a batch file for myself so all I have to do is run the .bat and it encodes all .avis automatically from the input directory to the output directory...

But, yeah, if you're not comfortable with command line options, Windows Media Encoder 7.1 has a GUI that makes it easier to use.

laff, you batch encode several movies at a time? Doesn't that make your PC chug like a bastard? Are you re-encoding the VF movies, or is there some other task you need to do it for?

Yeah, I batch encode and go run some errands and come back like half an hour later, works for me!
