we will do well to maintain the player base (for consoles) that we have. Here are the reasons

1)There is more competition in the gaming market than ever
before. Each competitor wants to attract and keep the
market share they get.

2)There are only so many gamers and only so much time in the
world

3) The games are getting more and more sophisticated requiring
more and more time to master and keep a reputable showing
on the leaderboards. For example FPS have evolved big time.
Look at the difference between the firt DOOM compared to
Black Ops, the sophistication of stages, team work, weapons
requires more time to get really good at black ops than it
did to get good at doom. Gamers only have so much time


4) Blockbusters like red dead redemption, assassins creed,
Guitar Hero, Modern Warefare, Black Ops, Final Fantasy
take and keep large market segments. There are only
so many gamers in the world and their time is finite.

5) Blockbusters tend to be self perptuating and trend setting,
Every publisher wants to be the next one to publish a
blockbuster

The entire genre of fighting games that are 2d or 3d derivatives of the Street Fighter are considered 'C titles' or passe, and are now playing second fiddle to the combat sport fighting games. Talking about community promotion of a game:

Because of the above reasons (and a few more) The fanbase of VF will not get much bigger than it is. If we can maintain it where it is now that would be a good thing.

The onus is STILL on SEGA, it doesn't matter what we do if they don't want to release their games to us.

What else is there? You can try to keep the flame alive for VF and I have no problem with it if that's how you choose to spend your time. However, SEGA themselves has sent a pretty clear message to VF players all over the world, for the past several years, that they've basically written us off.

Without the newest versions of the game, it will die.

 

You all missed my point. It really doesn't matter what Sega does. Even if they release VF5FS to consoles, and advertise it to death, the VF fanbase will not grow much beyond what it is right now. (Sure we'll all be happier) but the fact is:

Guitar Hero
Black Ops
Fall out 3
Assassins's Creed
Portal
Need For Speed,
Lost Planet
Socom
FIFA
Metal Gear
UFC 2010, EA's MMa etc

Have sucked up so many players, and so much of their time, until there is very little to none [/size]left for Virtua Fighter (regardless of what version) or any arcade type fighting game for that matter. Compare the number of online players of MW2 at any given time, with the number of online players of Tekken or SC4 at any given time.

The truth is: VF5 Online was not the savior everyone thought it would be. How much did it really boost sales? How many new players does it bring everyday? Yes it did keep the fanbase intact, but it didn't generate McDonald's numbers.

Now SEGA has one excuse to say they need to protect(keep) the aracde profits, so they deny releasing console version.

Of course ppl are capable of playing more than one game at a time

But my point is, there are more and more to play, and the new ones that come out are getting ever more sophisticated. So to be really good in any game, its taking more time than it used to.

Of course, many of us are 'Jack of all Trades' but 'Master of None' we play lots of games at a mediocre level. MarlyJay maybe you've joined me in that crowd But if you're gonna play at a competitve level for instance in Black ops, and Halo, that cuts your time down for other games. Somethings gonna suffer. There's only so much time in a day dude. You can only be at the top of a leaderboard at the same time for a very limited number of games
