I wish there was a good non-float based 3D fighter

I wish there was a solid 3D fighter that didn't involve float combos so much. I prefer VF4 over the Tekken and SC series, in part because floats aren't as exaggerated. But floats are still a huge part in VF4, too much for my personal tastes. I do love VF4's implementation of staggers, crumbles, etc. But I wish the character weights were differentiated in some other way. I dunno, something about the big float combos that I just don't enjoy. Doesn't quite feel right. Never liked the huge launchers in some of the 2Ds either.

Guess I'm too old school for my own good. Just a personal opinion.

I personally would like the throws to seem a bit more realistic. I mean I see the lightweights doing moves on the heavyweights as though they were lightweights. I mean can you imagine pai doing [8][9][6][3][2][1][4][P]+[G] on jeffry that fast and without any problem whatsoever? I also want to see Aoi's throws be a bit more realistic. I mean I could go and list all of the throws which IMO should be changed to appear more realistic, but I'm sure that people have noticed them.

IMHO, the throws actually look pretty realistic in VF4. Having practiced aiki-jj for a bit, I actually think that Aoi's throws are actually one of the more realistic looking ones. Now TFT... /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

    I'll just dream about VF5, I suppose.. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Oh no, I'm' not saying that they're not realistic, just that they should be performed realistically on certain characters like heavyweights or lightweights. For example, when Akira does his [4][3][P]+[G] it looks the same even if you do it on a heavywheight. I would like the throw to be a little bit different like less distance displacement on heavyweights and more distance displacement on lightweights. Also when Wolf does his [4][3][P]+[G] it should appear a bit slower when he does it to a heavyweight than when he does it to other players to seem more realistic. For Kage, his side throw looks tottaly fake because he can take even the heavyweights with his armbar with great ease and it just looks...well...fake.

Oh, and about Kage's TFT...well you already made that clear in your post so I wont even get into any details about that move.

Only game I can think of like that is Tobal #1 for PS. I didn't play Tobal #2 much but it was float heavy.

floaters are an integral part of the game, i really can't see vf being successful without them in at least some form.

Actually, take a look at VF3... that's what they did then.

I too, wish float wasn't such a big part of the game.

But.....That may be because I play with Pai, and she floats like the clouds.

Pai = Second lightest character in game.
Pai floating = lots and lots of damage.

Yeah, I love Pai. I love Aoi. Mainly because you can do so many good combos on them. But I guess that's what makes VF such a good game. You have to learn to fight smart so that you do not get floated in the air and get the sh#t beaten out of you.

I live to float. Floating with Lau in VF3 was what made me like VF in the first place. All I want to do is float people. Don't turn your back on me; I might float your Girlfriend or your mom or your cat if your not looking.

Sadly, I don't know what to make of the new FT Lau who seems to have had an attack of conscience in regards to floating his opponents. Maybe he read this thread.

VF floats are awesome- a flashy way to take of a big chunk of your opponents life. Usually people who complain about the floats, coincidentally, lack the dexterity to pull them off. Not saying that this applies to anyone in this thread, just saying that's been my experience.

    Motherfucking Lau Players!

I've seen full charge [P]+[K] get a float combo in evo.

    [6][6][K]

    BT (buffered) [9][K]

[9][K]+[G]>[3][P]+[K] will connect in some circumstances.

    Motherfucking Lau. /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well, floating is such an integral part of 3D fighters nowadays, so a lot of characters Live to Float.. Float to Live. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif And consequently, I think many of the top tier chars have good floaters while the poor guys like Goh have sucky floaters. I could be pretty off on that last statement?

Personally, I think float combos are actually technically easier to pull off than most other types of combos, but that's just me. Yeah, it takes knowledge and skill to get the maximum damage out of a float, but I think most people can get at least some solid damage out of floats. Me, lacking knowledge in general, I just tend to go for the "applies to all weight classes" type of combos. Things like spods and links and move canceling type of combos in 2Ds, are generally harder in execution, imho.

I'm just sick of seeing people float into the air, sail down as if they were a feather, and being pounded as they gently fall. I know that these games aren't fighting simulations, but it just looks odd to me. But yes, people getting pounded by energy spheres emanating from hands- yeah, that looks pretty natural to me. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hmm. Well that's exactly why I stopped playing street fighter. I just want a no pulses or laser beams or crazy stuff happening. Just straight up beating. I mean don't get me wrong I like that stuff, but I would just play that for fun. VF for me is a bit different; it's more down to earth with a little twist. IMO if you want to play a fighter where stuff flashes and things are shooting out of a characters hands or whatever, go play MK or street fighter. If you want to play a generaly realistic game go play VF.

I hate projectiles more than I hate float. The idea that one person could stay on the other side of the screen and damage you without exposing themselves to risk makes my stomach turn and is the main reason I don't play 2-D fighters anymore.

Vanessa has few floats and relies mostly on crumples...

If you want a game that has no floats, then they just have to come up with another system to give guaranteed damage.when you perform a certain attack.

Crumples might look more realistic... but the game is still a far cry from realistic fighting...

You wouldn't want realistic fighting. It would be all grappling. Boring Boring Boring.
