Is it all about the fighting style?

I'm wondering how people choose their fighters in this game. Is it all about the character's fighting style for you? Is there another reason? And also, how long did it take for you to choose a main?

    Eileen because

    Cute - check
    Cute Voice - check
    Sweep( I stopped using it /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif ) - check
Fighting Style that I like - check
    Annoying(for opponent) - check
    Funny Throws - check

that was it for me pretty much

    ViperExcess,

you have been obsessing about character choice and making connections to doa since 8 months ago when you picked up VF4EVO. Lemme tell you something, if you want to become good at VF you need to stop making connections to DoA and instead take things for what they are.

There are far too many things in VF that have no equivilant in DoA due to the difference in how the system works in both games.

I liked Sarah cause I like the idea of conditioning my opponents with her Flamingo stance, something that you just do not have in DoA which is what ultimately attracted me to her. The whole concept of moves with advantage on block that left her in the stance was amazing to me coming from a game with literally no equivilant to that.

If you ask people directly what they think each character is about and take what they say for what it is instead of trying to play a hopeless game of "connect the dots" you'll end up enjoying VF a whole lot more.

When you play VF, you play VF; not DoA with more options, depth, and balance.

So you think I'm comparing this game to DOA at every single step? Funny at how you think you know my thoughts, but if you must know, I treat VF as its own game. I wasn't expecting a different type of DOA when I purchased this game. Yes, I play DOA, and yes both DOA and VF are 3D fighters, but you act like I cannot tell the difference. Anyone who's picked up this game and played it AT ALL can see that they are different games, despite sharing a few similarities. I don't see how or why you brought up DOA in this thread. No need to assume that I, or any DOA player for that matter, play this game with DOA in mind specifically.

I like to experiment with character choice because I like to see different fighting styles, to experiment with them, and to learn about the fighters. I don't play a fighting game if I don't like the fighting style and the mechanics. My character choice thing comes from the fact that I like seeing what other characters have. I consider that if I have problems choosing a character, it's a testament to me liking the game. AND yes, this does carry over whenever I play any fighting game I like. You can also add the reason (for VF) that I just started playing this game.

I don't always "hopelessly connect the dots". If experimenting is wrong, then take me to jail. I like to experiment and fool around. It's a way for me to have fun in a different way while playing. I never try to post in forums unguided.

But of course, I only try to "hopelessly connect dots" with the above thread instead of asking people, right? This isn't exactly a good way to respond to a DOA player that just got into this. We're all fighting game players, and we play to have fun. Do not alienate DOA players, or groups of DOA players because of the game they play.

At least you answered my question, though.

Dude, I'm not allienating you cause that would involve saying "DoA sucks and you should go back to playing your scrub game."

I'm saying you are looking at this game the wrong way. This is a very hard game to just come out an analyze every character and try to just memorize every single ones fighting style. Why? Cause they are ALL SO DIFFERENT. There are huge differences with each character in how they play and what each specific situation means to them.

The reason why most people tell you to grab a character and just try to learn him for a good long while is because it's the best way to learn the game as a whole. Sometimes you end up learning more about characters by playing against them with one character you know best then actually trying to analyze them on paper or go through there movelist.

One of my biggest mistakes was trying to analyze Lion on paper and by going through his movelist when I was at EVO West. I still ended up losing cause at the end of the day there is just WAAAYY to much to the little guy to be digested overnight. Every character is like this which is why sometimes people get intimidated by VF. Which is unfortunate cause for me it's the reason I love it.

In summary, sometimes the best way to learn the game is to stick to someone you like the most (weither it be by movelist, strategy, annoying voice acting, or style) and get as many matches as you can in with them against as many different characters as possible.

I play with a chracter based upon their overall style--not fighting style. I know people who automatically jump on any quick blonde character (ala Ken) in any given fighter. I'm not like that. Usually I go for the more abstract, harder-to-play-with characters.

For instance, my favorite VF5 character is Goh. As a secondary, I like to use Eileen. IMO, those two characters' styles are a little out of the box. I'm sure that can be argued. In either case, you have the hardcore sloppy hitman on one side, and the cute flippy monkey-bitch on the other. I'm just trying to figure out who I'll play with inbetween?

I only play Goh because he uses Judo, and I am a judoka. I would play any character that used Judo.

    My favorite:
    Vanessa
    female: check
    sexy: check
    no shirt: check
white hair : check (like Christie in DOA)
    stances: check (again like Christie)

i stink at fighting games but this one is perfect for me.. learn one character at a time cause theres just too much to try to get all at once..

I originally loved kage because he's a ninja what else need be said. But once I saw the demo of eileen doing her monkey dance I knew I'd love her. I like characters that are evasive and can really mess with someone's head. I love mind games and she can really be played effectively using her various options. It really boils down to my avatar name I like tricky characters

I can't seem to choose a character, every time I sit down and try to learn one my head explodes and I have to have a lie down.

The best way is to start by just messing around with one ignoring these forums till you find one that jives with you. Then start to learn the nitty gritty. Or just learn one or two things about the char a day or week even from the forums to learn what they can do to be effetive. It's how I'm going through all the characters to learn how to play against them all.

Good advice cheers Tricky!! Of all the characters I think I'd probably plump for Brad. And it is all about his fighting style, I just love Kick Boxing. Bring back the old Van Damme films that's what I say!!

np it CAN be really overwhelming. When I started my quest to learn all the characters I looking at this forum and it suddenly became like trying to read an encyclopedia in one sitting. It seemed impossible. Then I just figured I'll mess around with the character on my own then come to the forums when I feel like I have a decent grasp of how to play the char. Something learned on ones own is often learned better than something given to you.

Well that makes sense, thanks again Tricky. I mostly just blast through about 40 matches a night with my nextdoor neighbour, when I'm not in the pub that is!! I would probably benefit more from playing online but everybody has a different level of involvement and enjoyment from any given game don't they. I could quite happily devote all my time to this game and become fairly good, but equally I could do the same with something like Gotham Racing or Call of Duty. Or I could just go back down the pub, whatever takes my fancy really.

You'll have to play me sometime to show me what it's all about, GamerTag: Quadroflange.

In addition to messing around with characters, I highly recommend watching the replays provided on the game disc (under VF.TV).

Here you can see every character being played at a high level. It gives you an idea of what kinds of things are possible with a character, which is something you may not be able to discover on your own simply by messing around in a sitting or two.

By watching these matches you might start to find that you like certain things done by certain characters. This can then help you narrow down your choices, and hopefully help you find the one character to stick with!

Dan, I'm not THAT crazy, lol. I'm not gonna pretend that I have so much time on my hands that I can actually fully experiment with everyone. It's gonna be fun fighting different kinds of people, but I'd like to have my share of fun with the characters as well, even if it's the most basic things I can do with them. It's all about the feel at first IMO.

And also, as I keep playing, I'll naturally narrow down my list anyways and be more about actual experimenting rather than plain ol' fooling around. As I fool around in the beginning, I also get a chance to grasp the basics of the game (sidestepping, TE, etc.), so I'm attempting to get somewhere. Time's gonna be involved, so why not have fun while doing so? My way, at least, along with Command Training and Command Time Attack.

I've also checked out the replays Myke was talking about. Some good shit they have there, I must say. Thx, man; it really helps.

As you guys can tell, I have broad tastes. As long as I don't outright dislike a character, I won't rule him/her out. My tastes may be broad, but I still have my personal bias. I like to get the "right" feel before I truly decide and I treat my character choices as processes. Call me overanalyzing or too careful, but that's just me. I have fun during these processes, too much damn fun.

Yes, because VF is an extension or a reflection of some part of who you are. That is why VF is so awesome it has the depth to capture aspects of human reflex, triumph, and failure.

If we have the wisdom to learn, all may teach us their virtues, some are master of the White Crane system. From the crane we learn grace and self control. The snake teaches us suppleness and rhytmic endurance. And what of Lion? The praying mantis teaches us speed and patience. And Lau is he not of the tiger. From the tiger we learn tenacity and power.

Because I am from the dragon I chose Lei Fei, from the dragon we learn to ride the wind. Life sustains life. Yet with wisdom the body learns to sustain in ways that all may live.

VF is part of a journey to your own self discovery /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Man masterpo you make vf sound so deep. Awesome!

I get what you're saying but sometimes you might like what a character can do but you might not like how you have to play to do it if you know what I mean? I just feel like actually going through learning the basics with a character on your own (if you're getting overwhelmed by the knowledge base) will hep you pick someone you might like more.

I think the vids help a lot more once you've gotten your hands on the chars so you can pick who's going to be your tourny char.

    Well my friend,

Its not that I'm making the game sound deep, it is deep. To suppress a truth is to give it force beyond endurance.
Have you ever heard it said that playing a sport helps
    build character?

In this case VF is the sport, and through it you will learn to face your inner weaknesses. Let's say for instance that you're tuning into Akira and you like the possibilities but the way you have to play to put any of those possibilities to good use seems awkward, hard, or what ever.

That's what the VF journey is all about. In many ways VF has the same relationship with martial arts as say the console Madden games have with the NFL football. Its a simulation.

In the martial arts it might take a life time to master one system, or school of fighting. The same is true for virtua fighter. To master any of these styles you're going to have work hard, study, and learn the ways of the warrior.

Some VF sytle might seem easier than another at first, but as you
get deeper into the game and the VF scene you're going to find there are no short cuts. As the intensity, style, and tenacity of your competition increases you're going to find that there is no safe or easy VF style.

I'm sure you've heard the ole VF saying "no pain, no gain"

Look at the VF style that has the possibilities that you identify with and then put in what ever work it takes, but realize this is a journey and will take you years (which is true of virtually anything worth doing) and is certainly true of most sports. So take your time, be patience, and have the courage to loose.

What is cowardice? But the bodies wisdom of its weakness. What is bravery but the bodies wisdom of its strentgh. So we make a every finger a dagger, every arm a spear, and every open palm a forceful weapon.

Last VF I played was VF2... and I knew how to use everyone, and was using Akira last... then I played VF5, and tried Akira, and realised really quickly that uhmmm... I should probably start with someone a bit more basic, so I'm using Pai. She was my 2nd favorite character in VF2 anyway.
