Is SC4 that great of a fighting game?

I find Maxi to be a LOT like Sarah in a way. Hard to fight against, tough to use lol. Once people know what he can and can't do out of which loops, he has to get extremely creative.

I still waiting to get a few matches in with you. That Rank shit really means nothing to me since winning increases your rank period. I just want you to bring Ivy ass here.

I put Taki and Maxi both into that position. You can control Sarah, but Maxi on the other hand, seems more towards Lei Fei's loss of control and having to wait and shift, but he aint got no sabaki's. That's why I stopped using him. I hated having to wait for moves. Taki is quick guessing games like Sarah.

After playing VF for so long SC is easy. Anyone agree?

Depends who you're playing. I'd say it can be harder than VF to win depending on who you're using. It's not as balanced as VF so some match-ups feel very difficult to win.

I'm a big "the game isn't balanced" complainer and I harp on it a lot. I don't think VF5 ver C is 100% balanced but it blows SC4 out of the water. Game balance has basically become my biggest pet peeve. If I think the games isn't balanced I get way too frustrated instead of just seeing it for what it is and having fun.

Regardless of how I feel about the balance of SC4 I can't stop playing it. It's so fucking fun for some reason I'm just hooked on it for now. I want to get my Ivy to the level where I can weapon-switch seamlessly throughout the fight and in combos and not get caught in the wrong weapon so often.

I will switch to whip or sword and not keep my opponent within the optimal range for using them. I know there is many levels of skill above where I am right now so I'll just keep working on it. I have to admit, despite the problems I have with it, the game is fun for me to the level of addiction. I just WANT to get better so I can start doing things that impress myself.

Nothing is more fun for me than training hard for a long time, and eventually pulling off something that's difficult and nasty that makes me say, "damn I'm good!" That's all I want maaaaan... Is that too much to ask???

This is why I play Setsuka now, over Taki. They're both too fun, but Setsuka seems more rewarding when you pull some cool stuff off.

With Lei Fei, there's certain stuff I'd like to do, but can't do it because he's in a stance, or certain stuff automatically puts him into a stance beyond what I want to do. It never felt like an extension, like Sarah's flamingo, or Taki's possession.

Maxi has this same problem, and with Maxi in order to do certain moves he has to move forward, backward or actually just sit there and wait in order for a certain stance to come out for a specific move. You can forget about doing some delayed attacks because it won't be that attack anymore after you wait, it'll be something different, because he'll have switched his stance.

    I didn't like it.

I too lose control with maxi. I was trying to notice the difference in his stance changes but I have such a hard time telling the arm/part of body he moves that nunchuck around.

  10. Its easier to just learn and KNOW what moves go into what stance. Trying to look for visual cues will just get confusing.

It's so strange that I see Maxi players say this somewhat often, but from the other side, playing against Maxi, it's like being in front of a run-away 18-wheeler...

If my opponent gets his offense going, I usually end up getting run right over. If I don't keep him off of me or get caught in whip with him in close, I'm as good as done.

Another thing I've noticed that makes me lose to him is, because he has so changing stance options, I'll go to counter-attack and eat the last move of the string that I did not know was coming. I eat that shoulder-check/ram he finishes one of his combos with way too often.

I know I just need more practice. Defense in SC4 seems to be a lot more about remembering your opponents strings and being able to block at the right levels than anything else. Side-stepping and 8-way run are definitely big but sometimes you need to know how and where to block because that's just your best choice at the moment.

For example, I've finally started blocking that Kilik mid>low>low string almost every time. I'm sure Kilik players hate it cause that's some of his bread and butter. Siegfried is still my "Nightmare" /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif and vice versa though...

Yes it matter where his nunchakus are but in actuality all the moves are ment have 2 low and one mid on every stance change (And he not even having a stance change. He just whipped the Chucks around his body.) Get in touch with me Tricky and we'll go over it. Also i finally found out how to narrow the gap between long reach characters when i use Maxi. Figuring out Kilik and Astaroth (Sorry Gernbergs lol! Ivy is mine now.) where the hardest things concerning his strings also.

Once you know the loop progressions, it's not too hard to get what you want when you need it. Does take a lot of thinking 4-5 moves ahead at times tho.

Yeh, I understand what you mean. The issue I basically have with Maxi is, say you want a specific move right then and now, you dont have that option. For example some stance has a low kick, while another has a ducking low kick sweep, I'd like access to the sweep instantly off of specific entries, but that wasn't the case.

Depeding on the stance, I'd have to wait to shift, or step back and forth to shift. Didn't like that.

    So I dropped Maxi immediately.

In response to the OP, it's a great fighting game IMO...The new "Soul Gauge"/"Critical Finish" system takes a couple gameplay elements from a certain 2D fighting game series I like(Guilty Gear), and mixes them into a 3D fighter...

Besides that, the game's aesthetics and other visuals are breathtaking...Not to mention the game's physics engine...Things like the deris and character's clothing damage...

A few overpowered characters as always, includiing a few who you wouldn't have expected to be(Looks at Sieg, Raph/Amy and Mitsu)...but still, a fairly viable roster(Not that I care for the tiers at all, I'll always play Hilde and Nightmare! ^_^)...

The single player modes are very dull, Story made is inferior to SC3's...Endings and everything...While Tower Of Lost Souls is a headache IMO, I don't care for customizing the skills and adding the special stuff just to beat some floors...

Online is hit and miss most of the time, lag can make some fights unplayable, but most of time it isn't too bad if your're fighting another person w/ a 4/5 connection...Still, the online expereince is much better than T5:DRO IMO...

Oh yeah, there's the customization! How could I forget that! lol I personally don't care for creating characters as much as I once did(Back in SC 3), so I have no opinion on that...However I do like to customize my two mains(Hilde and Nightmare) and the customization options are limitless, great job Namco! The catch is, to unlock most of the customization parts, you have to play the highly-irritating Tower Of Lost Souls...-_- Yeah...

Lastly, they've been putting out some neat DLC lately, such as extra customization parts and even the SC 1 soundtack...So you can switch original songs on stages to whatever SC 1 song you like, I for one am very happy about that option...because most of SC IV's soundtrack sucks for the most part...Tempered Soul is the best one out them all though..

I say get the game if you like weapon based martial arts, Star Wars and "buxom babes"(j/k) all at the same time...I'll say this much though, I've been feeling the need to play VF for a while now...SC IV is an awesome game, but...VF is just...Better...

Trust me. No other Soul game is as bad as Soul Calibur 3. Plus, I like Soul Calibur 4's soundtrack. It's just as good as the other installments' soundtracks. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbs_up.gif

Well, it took me a while to warm up to 3, but it's by far my fav. installment of the series besides Soul Edge...and IV of course...

Oh and, Soul Edge's OST > every other soul game. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

A rushed, but an ok game. I see no reason for them not to have added the original styles from sc3. Namco should update that somehow.

Rushed? Wasn't this in production longer than any other? And what original styles from SC3?

  20. XBJX

    XBJX Well-Known Member

    original styles for custom characters.

    - Katana & Shuriken
    - Kunai
    - Katana
    - Chinese Sword
    - Chinese Blade
    - Grieve Edge (my favorite)
    - Staff
    - Lance
    - Steel Fan
    - Sickle
    - Dagger
    - Iron Sword
    - Sword & Shield
    - Tambourine
    - Nunchaku
    - Wave Sword
    - Rapier

With these weapons selected in sc3 for your custom character, it strays from how the original cast plays for move list differences. That's why I said that it was rushed, since this is not in sc4.
