I enjoy deep skill based games. I don't really like games where you just mash the same combo and after a few hours you have won. i like competitive games where you can continously improve sorta like real life :O!

Anyway, the point of this thread is, do you believe VF5 is the deepest game ever? if not name some games that are close to its level of deepness. Also what is the deepest game of a genre?
here are some that i thought of that might compare:
    Deepest shooter- Counter-Strike
Deepest Action game- Devil May Cry 3 (probably the deepest single player game out there)

and... thats pretty much the main genres that i know well. what are some other deep games in other genres?
    like
    Rpg-
    MMORPG-
    Real time strategy(RTS)-

I think the game of Go is the deepest game ever.

I'm really growing tired of these following words when talking about fighters with the masses:

    Deep
    Balance
    Broken
    Cheap

    :\

And I don't mean any offense to you OP or anyone else who discusses these topics. Just venting my frustrations with these words haha.

    "Yes, you've got it."

    Chess is hardly an RTS.
Plee portomonee? (trans: toilet wallet) What kind of username is that?

    Arstal:
You ever play Rival Realms? It's insane, if you can keep track of the variables and metrics in that you're better off dissing people because they got it wrong at Mensa. I'll look Kohan up. It being named Ahriman's Gift gives me happy Tzeentchian blue/pink flame shivers.

    Deathsushi:
Hmmm, didn't know there was a term for that. VF is hardly nomic. The rules are made of granite. A game like Fluxx (cardgame) is nomic, because one actually changes the rules during play (win conditions, number of cards that can be drawn and played per turn, etc.). Ha, Fluxx is even mentioned on the page, whaddaya know, it's massively simplified version of a true nomic game though.

There's really no nomic video games out there. Unless you play hotseat with another player and you keep setting goals for the other player on the fly, then if he makes it he can set a goal for you until you reach a predetermined win condition. Could be a fun idea to base a game about, with computers being good at randomizing and all, very tricky to create visual references for this though, and hard to create a template wherein certain combinations of rules and conditions don't automatically lose you the game (cross ref: the Check Sum Error game).

    On topic:
Deepness, to me, is equal to the number of viable choices a player has at any one time that aren't overruled because one (or a few) of them are obviously more powerful (less risk for same reward, more reward for same risk, or both).

    VF excels at that.
Chess excels at that. Go is more difficult to read in this regard, because all pieces are equal I think you're often more constrained, with less moves being truly viable, the problem is actually seeing those viable moves. You can get into a massive debate on this. But I think, from my definition, Chess wins. Go definately presents another set of challenges to set it apart so its a very hard comparison. Sure they're both turn based strategy games. But then, apples and oranges are both fruit.

    Edit:
    I should've studied game theory...
