Just had to say that watching this tourney live was absolutely a blast. Minami, an Akira, won - beating Heruru in the finals. Minami has by far the best movement of any player I've ever seen and was stellar throughout the tourney. And I'm going to take credit for calling that he'd win after the 2nd round /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif Woo! Great tourney /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

    cheers,

BEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN! thank god i made the trip to my friends house to see this (fuck dial up /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif )

    highlights:

    1. the streaming on the video was fucking insanely godly good!!! it was like watching a smooth match!! and this thing was fucking live!!!!!???? how the hell?? wmp9 owns i guess.

    2. special excibition match bettween ikebukuro sarah vs shinj jacky (legendarrrrrrrrry worrrrriorrrrrs!!!) playing in custumized vf1 stages (i saw more than 3 vf1 stages in this). the vs screen also changed, showing vf1 portraits and stuff) the physics to the game were also altered, like there was no TR/QR and floats were ...changed, cant describe it. anyway, ikebukuro won, great match.

    3. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHINZ!!! shinz and moonsuk showed up as a special excibition match against kyasao's flashy kage, fisrt moonsk vs kya : moons won that, then shinz vs kya: kyasao won that. then after that everyone started singing happy birthday to shinz, so sweet of them to do that, very cool.

4.some amazing and oooh sooo close matches and comebacks.

    5. some comedy backstage thingy, funny..

    6. chibita losing yet another big tourney...wth

7.the announcer.........funniest mother fucker and awsome engrish LOL.

    8. the semi and final matches were soooo tense, you had to see it. also finding out it was double elimination at the end was good : /versus/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

    9. some "great" singing by our lovely kage voice actor (namuuuuuu!) takenobu!! at the end. i'll upload the first song later, but for now this is what i have right away (the last song).
    last song of tourney

overrall, this was almost like being there!! they should do this more often. its time like this that makes me proud to be a vf fa.........okok sounding fruty here, i 'll stop /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif

haha great post sudden_death -- summed up the events, and my feelings too, very nicely!

It is indeed a very good day to be a VFer. Took me a while to wipe the stupid grin from my face today!

I remember seeing his Akira in a Gaolla clip a few months ago, and his movement was really good. Is this the same Minami that plays Kage and does 1000000000 low punches every match?

haha, nope, Minami (written in hiragana) Kage is not the same person as Minami (written in Kanji) Akira. FYI, Minami means South. I reckon Minami Kage should now change his name to Kitanai Kage. (Kitanai = Dirty) /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif

DRE, if you can find that gaolla movie, mind letting us know which it is? I'd be interested to see Minami Akira play as I missed him during the tournament. I heard he's got some fast stepping!

Ok, now I remember. Minami dishes out some serious pain in "0111Gaolla03-B-02.wmv". Lots of KS in this clip. In "0111Gaolla03-first-03.wmv" he gets his ass kicked by Daiginga, just like everyone else does. If you think Minami is impressive, check out Teppei's Akira in "0111Gaolla03-C-03.wmv". /versus/images/graemlins/cool.gif I was shocked when I found out he wasn't in the tournament. /versus/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I have to digress - NOTHING could have possibly been as cool as being there. That was, in all seriousness, some of the most fun I've had in my life, even though I am greatly saddened that Heruru didn't take the championship.

I managed to sit near the front row, and saw most of the action way up close. I should note that the big screen they were using to broadcast the matches was absolutely amazing. I have never seen anything make VF4 look so good before! Everything was so sharp and beautiful that it was a total joy to watch.

    My favorite battles?

    - Heruru vs. Sodaisho. Did that KICK ASS or what? Him taking out Homestay was a total nail-biter, too. (Me: "I can't watch! I can't watch! *covers eyes*)
    - Anything with Tsuchikumo. After seeing him I really want to try to learn Pai a little bit more.
    - Chibita vs. Minami Akira - Major upsets are always interesting to watch. In this case, a favorite (Chibita) loses to a guy most VFDC people have never heard of until now (Minami).
    - Shinjuku Jacky vs. Ikebukuro Sarah - enough said.

    Other things of note:

    - Did you hear people yelling stuff like "OI!" whenever somebody got in a good attack? That was mostly headed by Tokyo Megane (incredible Vanessa player, I might add) and his buddies. They really get into this. That's certainly not a bad thing, though. I know I was screaming my lungs out at several points during the tourney.

    - Minami Akira lost his card the night before (at Joypolis, I think?), which was why he was at 10th kyu for most of his fights. They were asking if anyone had found it. Well, now that he's Daihaou rank, I don't think that's an issue anymore. (^^;)

    - I *THINK* The version of VF Ikebukuro and the other old-time tetsujin were playing is a hidden mode in PS2 VF4E. I missed the first little bit of this (had to use the bathroom) so I'm not sure.

    - Just so you know, Homestay and Sodaisho are from Nagoya, and are pretty well known around here. Devivru is another Nagoya Big Name Player and friend/teammate of Sodaisho. He didn't make it in the tourney itself but he was there to watch. Just goes to show that Nagoya is no slouch when it comes to producing great VF players. (^_-)
(Ironically, Sodaisho was the guy Devivru beat to get his Shogun ranking a while back.)

(By the way, was I anywhere to be heard/seen in this broadcast? If you saw a white female in the audience or heard a female voice yelling things like "SASUGA HERURU-KUN!", that would be me. If I am present, I shall have to be terribly embarassed. x_x)

The tournament is only the icing on the cake, though... I have plenty more stories from the nights before.

Hey Zero, thanks for the insights. Out of curiousity, what were Minami's stats on his old card?

    i agree

Only VFers get such good fan service.

Although annoucing their names in English was just terrible.

Christ, the announcer's voice was plain horrible.

But I'll take it again if we get to see it next yr n so on.

oh god i hope its true, but werent they playing in an arcade machine? so its most likely to be a new addition just for that event that they happen to include in ps2 version. so its like they said "hey lets put that super secret mode that we put in the ps2 version for our version B machine just for this show"

i heard Y.S being mentioned, what did they said about him? why he didnt come to this show.

p.s. of course nothing its actually better than being there, pretty obvious /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yeah, I wouldn't count on seeing that 10th anniversary mode in the PS2 version. More than likely they put it together for the event only as novelty item.

    cheers,

then thats one hell of a nice thing to do just for a couple of matches. all that programing gone to waste /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif

This is true, but who knows maybe it took someone a couple hours at AM2 to implement that. Besides, even if it was in the PS2 version, as neat as it was to see, who'd want to play VF4 Evo with the jump physics of VF1 and no techrolling? I would for about...mmm..2...maybe 3 minutes before I'd say "ok, that was cool, now lets actually play Evo." :p

    cheers,

"who'd want to play VF4 Evo with the jump physics of VF1 and no techrolling? "

    *raises hand*

this just extends the life of the console version by a lot, its...something else to do (like ps2 vesrion C's AI mode, one day i will try that mode....)

Did anyone capture the tourney and is going to hosted it? I'd had to leave early for work and still at work til 10pm. I really wish that I could have seeing the event that everyone is raving about. /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif
