Hey all, just letting you guys know that I just found out my placement for JET. I'll be in Fukui-ken, which appears to be by the western shore. So that looks awesome. If anyone out there in Japan could give me some info about Fukui that would be sweet. Thanks!

hope you like the quite life, fukui-ken can quaintly be described as "country" or inaka. but you have pretty easy access to nagoya and tokyo.

Right, but transport by Shinkansen, and finding a place to stay, is still hella expensive.

... does the Shinkansen even go out there?

Ah well, with luck you'll find someone to play VF with. If my friend Silver can find a Virtual On scene is someplace as backwoods as Matsue, you might get lucky too.

Shinkansen does go to Fukui I think - a friend of mine did a study abroad there in High School some time ago. Yes, it's extremely country-side. At the time, my friend was one of 3 gaijin in the whole prefecture. He bumped into a fixture at a mall in town, knocking some stuff over. By the time he got home, his host mother had heard, and asked if he was okay.

I did one in Shizuoka many moons ago. First day of school, I bumped my head on the train getting out(I'm 6'3"). Mind you, this is still a 30 minute bus ride from the school. At the Q&A session w/ the students, the first thing they asked is, "Is your head okay?" In short - you'll stick out.

Also, pack winter clothes. Place your finger on Syberia on a map. Then go down w/ your finger, into the Sea of Japan. Then notice that Fukui is right there. Brrr.... I'm sure you can get to some slopes easily in the winter though.

I hear N. Korean spy boats like to enter in small port towns out there. Perhaps you could become a local hero if you busted one, seeing as how every one hates North Korea at the moment, and for the Japanese, I think I can say with ample cause. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif
