Just bought the game, and have a question

I just bought VF5 (for 360), and I have a question regarding tournaments. I was wondering, if I should I get one of those arcade joystick controllers. I know this might sound stupid considering I just bought the game, but I plan to get good enough to go to tourneys, and I was just wondering if they are touney legal (generally), and if they make it easier to pull off certain combos. I am asking so soon, for I don't want to get used to the 360 controller, and then find out that I would be better on the arcade joystick controller. Thanks in advance for the input.

Yeah get a stick if you can, it's way easier than a pad once you get used to it.

I'm guessing you'd be playing on the arcade machine at tournaments, they don't use 360's right?

Ah ok thanks, that was my next question haha. I was just wondering because there was a tournament at the southern cali anime expo for soul calibur and a lot of the people were mad cuz they wouldn't let them use their arcade stick controllers.

Depends on the tournament... VF arcade machines are kinda rare in the states. But, every tournament I've ever been too has used EX2 arcade sticks on 360s, never normal pads.

I use the controller now, but plan to buy a stick when I have more time to play VF. It's not too bad because I use the joystick and not the pad. Motions requiring you to input opposite directions (toward, back or back, toward) are quite easy on a joystick. If you're going to play in tournaments, I'd suggest buying joystick, since you'd have to use one in the tournament.

about 95% of all serious VF players play on a stick. It mostdefinatly is easier on a stick.

it has most definitely more the arcade feel to it, but that doesnt mean its easier. there are players that feel much more comfortable with pad. and 95% is more of an asumption imo, cuz most play it in the arcades. i doubt that the majority of home vf players are serious ones, so 95% isnt much really.

anyways, its personal taste after all.

It is also next to impossible to do some moves without a stick

I use Pad all the time and kill my thumbs trying to do some moves

There are indeed some characters which are more suited to pad play due to easier inputs /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif Would you mind sharing with us which character in particular gives you thumb trouble?

Well akira is the hardest of the cast to do on a pad. Why don't you trying sending a PM to Seidon, just yesterday he was saying that he can do every akira move on the pad, maybe he has some advice for you.

It's hard but certainly possible, a friend of mine plays wolf and akira on a pad but unfortunately he's doing army service atm so i can't reach him and ask him for you /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

Anyway, look at the bright side, playing akira on the pad means you can use shortcuts - which means you can execute his KNEE more easily /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Playing on a pad is gonna be problematic for you if you ever participate in tournaments.

WCG 2008 prohibited the use of shortcut buttons

The Super battle opera qualifiers in France (although not for VF yet) prohibit the use of pads entirely.

ps. Playing Akira has more to it than just being able to pull off his moves. While it is possible to play whatever character you want on a pad, but youll be shooting yourself in the foot in the long run.
