Kanayama Survival Tournament 11/30 report

Yes, another gargantuan Sega VF4E gathering. This wasn't quite as big as the last one, as there was no event-quest to go along with it, and the tournament didn't have quite as many participants. But, it was still a great time. There were several "big guns" there: Ohsu Akira (current national champ), Yoro Kage (Arcadia tourney winner), and Kyasao on the sidelines. Ohsu and Yoro both entered, Ohsu playing Brad and Yoro sticking with everyone's favorite ninja.
Unfortunately for them, they both got knocked out early (in the second block). I was surprised at the amount of cheering that went on whenever Yoro got beat. (^_^;)

Yoro has a girlfriend, I might add. She had a card but I didn't see her play, sadly.

Less contestants meant less character variety, so it was mostly Jacky, Akira, Kage, Lau, Lion, and a few others. Several characters weren't present at all. No Vanessas made it in. Not even Shivanessa, who for some reason wasn't in this tourney at all. Considering he was the runner-up last time, this surprised me. Pe Lion was around, though.

But after playing, Ohsu proceeded to dominate with Vanessa for about a 20 win streak. He mostly uses the offensive style, and proves that in skilled hands it is a force to be reckoned with. Anyone who claims OS is "weak" needs to see Ohsu and Kurita - they will shut up really quick. I know I picked up several tricks from him. XD

I was quite happy with the results of this tournment, as the winner was a friend of mine - Devivuru. He's a Jacky player and a pretty fun guy who pops up around this area to play. For winning, he got a plaque, a special rank, and a picture taken of him wearing that huge, ugly championship belt we've all seen. (He didn't get to keep it, BTW.)

Highlight of the night for me: Beating on uraohsulau's Aoi. I think I was just lucky, heh.

Pictures of this will probably be on am.sega.jp very soon, so keep your eyes peeled. Maybe I'll pop up on there this time around.

EDIT: I also saw the coolest-looking Sarah ever here. Long, curled read hair, green eyes, dark makeup, black outfit... and DEMON WINGS. Whoa, first time I ever saw that item. Talk about cool.

    actually you are not helping.

I haven't seen a decent OS Vanessa on the clips... maybe I
haven't been downloading much vids recently but I THINK
there are not many with Vanessa and fewer with OS.

While your reports of all these events are very interesting
I noticed that YOU NEVER EVER said a word about the playing
styles and moves of the players. Which is kind of... I don't
know... I know you play Vanessa and probably have a pretty
good understanding of her moves but you never say anything...

I know maybe you dun have time but sometimes, it helps to
just mentioned which moves the players used the most and
then people can experiment with those moves and find their
    merits...

I disagree Alantan. Zero-chan is not obligated to tell us anything. She is in a unique position and decided to inform us of the rich culture of VF in Japan, purely because she felt like it.

Junky's Jungle is for general discussions related to Virtua Fighter. I believe informing us of a foreign lifestyle that we're all obviously interested in is a great example of goodwill and I for one am glad she goes to the trouble of keeping us in the loop.

Jesus, you expect me to keep a photographic memory of every single match? If I had several hundred dollars worth of video equipment I would be working to painstakingly capture every Vanessa match of note. But for now, I just watch these players, see something neat, and think "Hey, that's cool, I should try it."

My most recent note of "need to try this out" is holding[6_], doing standing [P] while still holding, and then going into [6_][K]. Ohsu did this a lot and caught a ton of people off guard with it. I've been wanting to figure out better uses for [6_][K] but since the command is a bit unusual I find it hard to pull off sometimes. Seeing him use it gave me a few new ideas.

One thing Ohsu is really, REALLY good at is anticipating low throw opportunities. I saw him pull several low throws seemingly out of nowhere.

Noooooooo.... a Jacky player won. /versus/images/icons/frown.gif

Hehehh, anyway it sounded fun. I wish I was lucky enough to live in Japan. VF in North America really sucks for me. It suits geographically concentrated places like Japan/South Korea/Hong Kong/Taiwan so well, whereas N/A is just way wayyy too geographically dispersed. I am tormented with having no VF'ers to play with. Many people have suggested moving to somewhere like New York just for VF, but then I have to check my sanity.

Anyway back to the topic, what company sponsors these tournaments/events?

I do enjoy your reports for the events (although they never
mention gameplay) and for that I thank you. I just kind of
hope, pray that you are kind enough to drop a few tidbits
on the gameplay itself... You usually just focus on the
events itself with no mention of the gameplay at all.

Still I appreciate all your reports and I have said in the
earlier posts they are very interesting. And Adio is
right, you have no obligation whatsoever to say anything
about the gameplay but I just thought a few words won't hurt.
