Can the movie martial arts as depicted in Kung Fu movies like:

    Shaw Brothers Movies
    The Five Deadly Venoms 1 & 2
    Deadly Mantis
    36th Chamber of Sholin

    Bruce Lee's
    Enter The Dragon
    Way of the Dragon
    Fist of Fury

    Jacky Chan's
    Drunken Master,
    Snake in the Eagle's Shadow

    Jet Li's
    Shaolin Temple
Once Upon A Time in China1,2,3
    Fists Of Legend
    Fearless
    Tai Chi Master

    Donnie Yen's

    Ip Man 1,2,3,4
    Flash Point
    Legent of the Fist
    Sha Po Lang
    Dragon

Be implemented more realistically in a fighting game than some of them are in Virtua Fighter? I know games like SF, and MK have some of the styles. But when it comes to capturing the essence of those Kung Fu in the movies, am I wrong or does Virtua Fighter do better job at creating that movie martial arts feel than anybody else?

DOA has Jan Lee, Brad Wong, Genfu, Tekken has Feng Wei, Wang, Lei Wul Long , Xing, and Wang, but I don't think they really capture the kung fu in the movies the way VF does. Is it just my blatant VF bias blinding me:ROTFL:

I think this topic has been touched on here and there on VFDC, but I'm not sure if its really been answered.

Out of the 3D Fighters, Tekken, DOA, and Virtua Fighter who has the most legitimate animations that most fit the Kung Fu/ Martial arts in the movies:LOL:

I know Tekken had a lot of bonafide martial arts motion cap, and I think VF did too. I dunno about DOA. Did they have any real martial arts mocap in DOA:confused:

Is Jacky and Sarah's Jeet Kun Do, better than Tekken's Marshal Law, or DOA's Jan Lee?
Is Shun Di's Drunken Master a closer movie rendition than Lei WuLong's Drunken Master, or Brad Wong's?

What about Ling Xiaou compared to Pai Chan? Classic Movie Martial Arts from 70's and 80's

If I'm looking for implementations in Fighting Games of Martial Arts : Karate, Judo, Shaolin Kung Fu, Drunken Master, Prayin Mantis, Monkey, Eagle fist, Taekwon Do, Jeet Kun do, etc from the movies how would we rank DOA, Virtua Fighter and Tekken:) Which FG has the best movie martial art animations:ROTFL:

    Interesting question.

If we're talking about movie styled martial arts, I'd say it is kinda spread out evenly among all 3 games. But tekken takes the cake, for over exaggerated movie themed martial arts.

    Tekken., Ok they have:

    Lei Wulong
    Feng Wei
    Ling Xiaou
    Law
    Leroy
    Heihachi
    Kazuya
    Jin
    Nina
    Hworang

    But Virtua Fighter has:

    Jean
    Lau
    Pai
    Aoi
    Kage
    Goh
    Akira
    Jacky
    Sarah
    Eileen
    Leon
    Lei Fei
    Shun Di

I dunno , I don't think Tekken takes the cake;)

In a way, I agree, but Tekken is based upon the Hong Kong martial arts film over exaggerated, unrealistic notion, where like for example with (Marshall Law), when you do a move like a back hand fist, the character (Law) is stuck in that move for over 2 secs. No one in real life does crap like that, stuff like that is seen mostly in kung fu movies. In real life, a person would immediately draw back his hand to block or defend himself, immediately after that back hand fist missed or hit, otherwise a person would hit you while doing theatrical silliness like that.

Agreed., I guess it depends which decade of martial arts films we're referring to.

    1960's to 1970's
    1970's to 1980's
    1980's to 1900's , etc

Comparing Wuxia films, to kung fu films, to recent stuff like IP Man 1,2,3,4, Redbelt etc. Its the difference between Shaw Brothers, Golden Harvest stuff and Dragon Dynasty stuff. In addition to which movie studio we're referring to, there is also the big difference between directors/producers e.g Gordon Liu, Yuen Woo ping, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Jacky Chan, David Chiang, etc all directed martial arts and each had a different notion of 'realism'

You're right Tekken combat does represent Martial Arts Movies, but its probably more pre 1990's martial arts, and Virtua Fighter combat does represent Martial art Movies but is more after the 90's to current movies. Tekken is definitely more fantasy based and closer to 70s - 80s and VF is 90's to present:ROTFL:

Tekken's fireballs, sparks, whirl winds, explosions, magic, vampires, tele-porting, disappearing and re-appearing, fighting kangeroos, pandas, bears, floating, flying, monsters, etc is so fantasy based, that the fantasy presentation over shadows the nice movie martial arts animations that some of the characters in Tekken have:LOL:

So yea you're right Tekken really is very close to a certain genre and time period of martial art movie. But VF combat and presentation is much closer to modern martial arts movies;)

And clearly the Tekken Community prefer the highly fantastical martial arts combat found in Tekken. Its a video game, so there's absolutely nothing wrong with heavy doses of fantasy if that's your cup of tea:)
