What do u guys think is the learning curve online vs. off. Anyone have a general cross-reference opinion? Ex.--ima veteran on level hard=4th dan online...or some such. Do ya have to be online to truly get good. My bro (smb_is_me) thinks so, and i tend to believe him, based on cpu untrainability. Anywho, i plan to sharben up a bit more on throw escape, om, dm, and general joystick skills and then get humbled online style. Life's looking up. In the past 2 days i found a hori arcade stick and got a promotion at work. But...it's only a 6 month position, and my stick is a DOA4 hori. I know this must be blasphemous to the VF gods. Love your site peoples. Lei Fei is underpowered : )

The CPU can definitely help you train some aspects of your game but not your Yomi. Yomi is so powerful in VF that you can't really win without it. You could play a straight frames-only game but a good player will still beat you in all likelihood.

Like you said, you can't train the CPU. That's gonna hurt your game against real people because if anything, they ARE trainable. Conditioning your opponent and learning his patterns is one of the main keys to victory (IMHO)... I guess you could say the problem with playing the CPU is that they don't really play like a human opponent.

For example, I've never played a real person that can spam successful evades like that, no one can do that. A human pretty much has to predict when to evade but the CPU, reading your inputs, can evade you any time. It will help you deal with evaders but real people just don't play that way in my experience. I'm not saying that quest mode isn't a great training tool because I think it is, it's just not the same thing as nice long set of player matches...

In my opinion, a nice set of player matches you get to face the same character over and over which helps you learn to recognize their flows and options more quickly than one-and-done against several characters does. I've had sets against people that just owned me, but by the end, I had to step my game up at least one level to compete. A good player will basically force you to get better to win, that's so good for your game.

Under fire from a skilled player is when you will stretch your capabilities and skills to win. You can't just do the same old thing you've been doing to win because it's not working on said player, you have to stretch and learn to win.

Gentleman Thief, for example, is a very skilled player and he whoops my ass badly pretty regularly (I'm very happy to just get a win or two against him because he's a dominating player and his defense is so hard for me to penetrate.) But after our matches, I know I had to push myself to hang with him and feel that I've gained some very valuable experience.

If you can get some games against someone who is better than you, challenge them as many times as you can. Just watching them beat you will help your game. Try to figure out what they are doing, how are they fooling you, what do they do on defense, when do they do it? etc... This is what has made me better. Just finding tactics that work against good players is awesome because those are probably some of the best tactics your character has...

I say play both quest and online to round yourself out. But, in the end, online is gonna help you grow more and take your game farther than just playing the CPU...

Work on the technical/mechanical aspect of the game on Quest Mode, i.e maximum damage combos, movement, defensive techniques.

Then get experience against different types of players online. Don't fret when you mess up commands online, it may or may not be you, just concentrate on the mind games. When online.

If I remember right that's the Hori EX2, it's what most of us are using for VF on 360. Apart from those lucky buggers with modded VSHG's.

The DOA4 Hori is actually better than the EX2. The buttons feel differently and much more responsive.

It's a better controller? Can anyone confirm this? I heard it was the sane. My comment was actually in reference to the fact that it has a picture of some strange doa4 chic on it, and says dead or alive 4 on it. Now, if only i could get a pic of lei-fei on there an social_ruin across the bottom...oh well, people say they crap out to soon.
Gurnberg thinks for the info. I really puts me at ease to hear the cpu evades are off the chart. Seriosly, that had me concerned bigbtime. If somebody had a bag of tricks, thousands of matches, and they could "spam" evade---only wolf online ---anyhow goodstuff.

I'm pretty sure the DOA4 stick is the same exact stick but with a DOA decal on it... It's an EX2 though for sure. The buttons may be different but I've never seen a DOA stick so I wouldn't know.

You're very welcome for the advice, always good to have a new member. Enjoy the site, it's awesome, has cool members and has more information than you could imagine!

You know what I can't say for sure if any offline rank would transfer to online rank because I'm like a vindicator or some shit offline after defeating quest but I'm like 6th dan online. And I even feel I'm that low because I don't play ranked a lot. I've fought people in player match that predicted I was like 9th or 10th dan AND I've had people murder me and then message me asking was I like a 7th KYU (Which was embarrassing). I think, just like everyone else said in most fighters you've just gotta play other humans to up your skill level against humans Cpu helps with the basic especially Defence but not much more in my opinion

Konjou uses the DOA stick i borrow it sometimes when we go to tournaments. It's better.

Hori certainly makes a good stick. My 6 year old nephew beat the piss out of my PS2 one playing King Of Monsters for hours. After he went home I popped in Garou and everything came out perfectly.
I remember the cheap $25 sticks they made when I was a teen and cringe when I think of their low quality.

I really miss online play and big reason why is to see the different variations in how each player is played. Only playing quest mode really helps me in my fundamentals but seeing the differences in how 2 players play 1 character really make me wonder just much I am missing. The actual learning curve is quite considerable especially if you play again good human players and play against hard CPU characters. I play against people in quest mode ranked higher than the Master rank and their defense is far greater than any human player I will ever play again online overall and it is forcing me to adjust more than I like but that is great it keeps me on my toes.

it was tough 4 me when i first went online in january i was 0 wins 56 losses using akira at the time.the learning curve 4 me was to deal with the speed of the game online, the controller since i alway use dpad and had to adapt to the small stick, and learning other players attack patterns or strategies. save ur replays often and watch them to learn new things and just have fun and enjoy the game see ya online social_ruin
