Lei Fei beginner help needed

I am a beginner at the game and Lei Fei is the character I'm trying to get good with. I'm doing all right so far and have made it up to 4th dan, but I'm having some trouble with my game. I always seem to be abused by the faster characters like Jacky. I do fine when I can keep them at medium range, but it seems like as soon as they get in close range I end up taking a lot of damage and have a hard time winning a match after that. Even after blocking big combos when I try to come out of the block to strike/grab I seem to get nailed by a speedy striking attack before I have the chance. I understand that Lei Fei's short game is supposed to be bad, but I know it can't be this bad, there has to be some way to minimize the damage I'm taking from this. Are there any moves/tips/anything to help me with escaping from this and getting the enemy back to where I want them to be?

I am not playing Leifei very well but I think you can take a view on the following:
1.Don't forget the fastest mid move [6_][6_][P], fast and save and push jacky away from you.
    2.[2_]P
3.dodge(recommended). Just dodge, don't need to add a [P]+[K]+[G] attack in most cases for Lei's evade attack is so weak. you can try throw or [3_][3_]P or [9_][K]+[G] or [6_][6_][P]after that.
4.[3_](or[9_])[P]+[K],[P]. But it's very risky, because jacky's [7_][K] can easily kill you. A best move to end the game.

    Sorry for any grammer mistakes.

although I find it dificult personally, I often see videos of lei players following up a dodge with [6]+[P]+[K],[P]+[K] to punish lp abusers

also it may help to learn the lei-fei dance, to confuse your opponent and let you practice transition to different stances

I just started playing Lei Fei but I can give you a few tips.
Remember to always try to get just within sweep range when playing him.

    1. Use [8]+[K]+[G] for low punch abusers.

    2. Here are 2 (of many) mix-ups that might be useful in your game.
    [P],[P],[K]+[G]
If they like to Evade before [K]+[G].
    Use [P],[P], [2]+[K]+[G] instead
The recovery time seems to be better in Evo for the above mix-up so it's even more useful.

    3. And you may want to abuse this move if your oppenent can't figure out what to do. It's fast and it makes some people nervous if done correctly with consistency.
    [2]+[G]+[P]+[K] stance
    [P],[P]+[K]

When I'm playing against a fast character I find the following moves pretty useful, I hope they help ...

Use [9][K]+[G] it's pretty fast and it hits mid, a good combo that starts with the double leg hop kick is : [9][K]+[G], [2][P] , [9][K]+[G] (you can normally slap on a [3][K] ground hit after the last hit ... the combo works against all but the heaviest fighters (wolf & jeff usualy don't get hit by the last [9][K]+[G])

[6][6][P] is another decent move, it's very safe and hits mid too ... you can pretty much safely abuse it (unless your opponent dodges a lot)

And I'll echo what junosynth said [DM] [P], [P]+[K] is probably the best 1-2 punch in the game (IMHO) ... it's insanely safe (even if blocked) ... this is one move you can really abuse ... actually you should abuse this move, it's that useful.

Also if you're being overwhelmed by quick attacks check out lei's sabakis (he has some of the best in the game) ... the move list on this site has all of them listed with what type of attack they counter, learn them to help deal with fast attacks. I use [tiger stance] [P] and [Tiger stance] [K] as simple but effective sabaki options ... the [P] works against a lot of high and mid attacks and the [K] is used against low attacks ... I use [6][K] (get in tiger stance) then depending on the flow of the match go for a quick sabaki/interrupt or I delay the attack to try and mess up my opponent's dodge or guard then throw game ... give it a try and see if it works for you ; )

And last but not least (this is probably the most useful info I have to offer) : If you haven't done it yet you should also check out ken's lei fei dojo ... tons and tons of good lei stuff in there, ken has done a really good job explaining some of the ins and outs of lei fei's game ...

i hope this helps you out a little ...

My Lei Fei game is crap because I haven't played in a while and I really need to work on it too. I just picked up the VF4:Evo perfect guide and the Lei fei section has some great combos and whatnot. Its this guide here and I don't speak or read Japanese worth a crap, but the guide is awesome.

On a side note it has no memory card or net card stickers like the the VF4 perfect guide another good book. /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Also I know some of the moves have changed but consider it getting a jump on Evo when it comes out this summer ?!? maybe
