Lion and DM attack (DMPK)

I've noticed that Lion's DM attack (DMPK) is very different from the rest of the cast. For most characters, I see DMPK as being a very defensive technique used to turn the tide of the fight from a disadvantage.

Lion's DMPK doesn't really work the same way. It isn't very evasive in close range and will usually result in your opponents move tracking you and getting counter-hit out of your attempted DMPK. However, if you use it from long-mid range it is a very cool and deceptive combo starter.

First, it's full circular so your opponent will get slammed if they try to evade (which they do try pretty often.)

Second, it actually does nice damage. On normal hit it does 30 dmg and on a counter it does 45 dmg. On a counter with a combo on the slam you can do 70+ dmg on almost any character.

This move is really an evasive (from mid-long range only), fast, full circular combo starter that is deceptive and surprisingly useful, just not in the traditional way.

The best combo I found off of it so far is DMPK> /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif> /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif for 73 damage on a counter hit.

I just wanted to mention this cool move and it's unorthodox use that I have found so far. Any more tips or strategies would be much appreciated!

 

I agree. I find it to be good from outside, but if used in close I find its animation is so long that the opponent has time to have their move evaded by the DM and still get time to either block or duck the P+K.

 

I wouldn't say it's fast but it's certainly its best damage launcher, using it for pressuring tech roll is a good option.
Some combos:

Escape to opp front : P,6_KK (62 on NH 77 on MC) works on everyone but heavies iirc
Escape to back: 44K P+K, 6_K (55)
To Back 66P+K, P, 4PP (61)
any side : 66P+K, 6PP (pushes opponent good for RO)

 

I really hadn't thought about the tech roll pressure but I'm liking the sound of it a lot! Thanks Chibitox and Fireflood!

Also I forgot to note that Lion's DMPK is special high so it will also take out opponents who try to 2P out of it.

In the move list the version you can do off P>P>2/8P isn't listed as special high (does give adv. on guard though, shhhhh), is this correct? I only ask because the move list also states that the similar punch out of 46P+K>P>2/8P is special high... Maybe they are both correct, I just wanted to confirm to be sure.

Apparently this particular DMPK (Lion's) is only -2 on block so it's actually pretty safe. It has a slow start-up though so if they are close to you, you will almost certainly be tracked and hit before the move comes out...

I still can tell if it's actually a Special High or not. Sigh ok I'll bite, I can't seem to figure out what DMPK from either the move list or a few searches on these forums...

 

@Gernburns: -2 on block but still high, I think that's what DabadSeed meant by "you will get punished".
And yes it is truly a special high, same with 46P+KP 8_2P

@pltan: DMPK= defensive move P+K = dodge (up or down) then press P+K
