Looking for cheap VF4 places in SG

To those of you living here (Singapore):

Anyone know of any cheap VF4 arcade places? I know Bugis' Virtualand charges $0.50 per game, but their buttons are configured wrongly (config. in this order: PKG!!!!!) for every single machine.

Funland (Bedok) charges 2 credits per game (about almost $1, depending on which card you get - the $10, $5, or $2 one)but the machine is a big one. Also, their buttons were configured GKP. I've asked the techie to swop the K and P around already though.

    Hi
I was delighted to stumble upon the VF4 machines in Bugis today. Was also very very happy to see that its only 50cents. I remembered the first time i played VF2 (in Challenger's arcade at Funan) and it costs $2.50 per game. VF2 was then very very hot and Challenger was the first place to have the VF2 machine then in Singapore. Had to buy the tokens in bulk to keep it affordable then. also had to wait for the machine to be installed in the morning and was the first to pay to play the game then. Hee hee! My friend had then informed me as he was the salesman selling the machine from Wywy. Sure brings back a lot of memories.
Anyway, it was very frustrating to see that the buttons were wrongly configured. Hopefully, bugis will change it soon. I am also on the lookout for other arcades with VF4 machine. If anyone knows where, please do share. Gotta brush up as well as i kinda rusty now. Use to spend a lot of time and money on VF2. hopefully i can regain my form. hahahaha! :)

Hey, I guess I probably know you. I STILL have one WHOLE bag of astropolis tokens :) The machine in AMK is also at 2 credits a game which is not too bad if you played VF2. That time it was really expensive but it was really fun as there was a whole group of players to play with.

Hey did you guys tell the technicians at bugis about the button configuration?? maybe I will go down to bugis tomorrow to play but AMK funland cost around 80 cents which is not too bad and it is big screen

LOL! Virtualand's VF4 buttons are PKG, Bedok Funland's are GKP? WTF? What happened to the good old days of arcade managers in Singapore that knew what they were doing (think David at Beauty World or the guy running Orchard Emerald Funland)? I guess they're all setting up CounterStrike LAN gaming centers now or something =(

Pinkgirl and Jimmy, do I know you? Jimmy in particular... your name really rings a bell, and given your story about the first appearance of VF4 at 5 tokens per game at Astropolis, I'm SURE I'd know you if I saw you. (I'm Chris Tan, btw, used to play Kage, and Lau and Akira as well).

At Sunnyvale Golfland in California, I just took advantage of the Saturday morning token special... changed USD 25 into USD 50 worth of tokens... so it comes out to $0.25 per game, around SGD 0.45 or thereabouts. Not too shabby =)

I think I might have played against you before during the good ol' VF3 days; I was always @ Emerald then & I was @ the amusement show back in Nov 97 with Andrew (A.T)... In any case I'm Andrew's gf. He's Colin's friend and says he knows you too. =)

And forget about going to Virtualand, Jimmy, cos the arcade techies there suck. Recently Andrew and I were there playing Tekken 4 and one of the buttons on the machine he was using was spoilt, as in totally wasn't working. When we told one of the technicians, he said "So??? So button spoilt, so what???". Well. In Mandarin we say, "ying liao lor". Anyway after he very reluctantly tested the button and found it to really be faulty, he was still unwilling to return the credit to Andrew. So Andrew threatened to get the manager out. The guy then launched into a long speech - shouting at the top of his voice at that - challenging Andrew to do so, saying that it was perfectly all right even if he lost the job since he didn't give a damn about it. After he finished throwing his tantrum he did return Andrew the credit then SLAMMED the cabinet door shut and stormed off.

That's the quality of service Virtualand provides. Oh, and I think I forgot to mention that Andrew had to wait about 20 minutes before the technician finally attended to him.

When we dropped by again later on in the week, the technician was still there.

Anyway, it's such a pity Virtualand has such f-ed up staff. We've been playing @ Funland for years and never come across such a situation. Unfortunately, Virtualand is also the place which gets the newest and best games the fastest (and @ the cheapest prices too - Tekken 4 when first released was priced @ only $0.50 there), so it was the first place we went to to look for VF4. Funland is rather unpredictable these days - the Bedok one for instance has converted its lower level to LAN gaming. Heck. Can't those people play @ home?!?! ROTFL :-D

Followed a couple of links and managed to find a picture of you. Hmm, don't think I saw you back in the VF2 days. I know Katherine, Pearlene and Nicole, though... know any of them? Was looking for a picture of Andrew as well, just to see if I know him, but I couldn't find any.

Very nice website (shreddedbits.com), btw. Great use of greyscale, font size and text layout, and lines. Me like! /versus/images/icons/smile.gif

P.S. Which Colin are you referring to? Colin Leong or Colin from Bishan (forgot his last name)?

VF1 and VF2 bring back a lot of memories...

The best VF1 cabinet was the one at Lido Wywy. 2 guys always made sure that the joysticks and buttons were 100% 24/7

The best VF2 cabinet was the old Megalo at Bishan when it was Funpolis. Buttons were changed at the slightest hint of any loss in sensitivity.

    *Sigh*

So Karma, what's your real name again? I'm pretty sure I know you...

I remember Lido WyWy for VF1 and Bishan Funpolis for VF2 very well... ahhh... the old days.

I don't want to sound mean or anything like that, but I wish I had something nice to say about you and your boyfriend.

I do know who he is, and I know he is Colin's friend. In fact, we had lunch together on one occasion and "talked VF2" back then.

I didn't see him again for some time. Then when VF3 was first released in Singapore (correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you two were together back then), I saw him playing and said hi to him, but he ignored me. No problem with that, I thought...he was probably engrossed in the game. I challenged him and he started whacking away, throwing me left and right. At the end of round 1 (which I obviously lost), I asked him NICELY if he could slow down and let me figure out the controls, but he just turned back to the screen and whacked away (he started round 2 with a P+G throw too).

*Note: Before anyone starts telling me that I could have escaped the throws, that was my first game of VF3 ever, and I didn't know that they were standardised to "command+P+G"*

I don't think I've ever spoken to him ever again /versus/images/icons/mad.gif

I remember you from the AAMS 97 when VF3tb was on free play. Guys were yelled at to get back in line if they lost a game and wanted to carry on playing, but you continued to play on after losing 3 or 4 games (and if I remember right, your boyfriend had to win the last game for you), even though there was a queue behind you.

Sorry about this venting, but I was reminded of the bad memories along with the good.

Firstly, Karma, I think you need to get your memory refreshed, and quite a bit at that too.

#1: Everyone queued up to play, including me. I don't think anyone exceeded their turns with the machines. They would've gotten jeered at. The only way someone could continue sitting there infinitely was if he won. I do remember winning several consecutive rounds. Maybe you just failed to see the "x wins" on the screen and assumed it was ME who was challenging and not the person sitting on the opposite cabinet. Maybe you need specs.

#2: No one has ever "won" ANY rounds for me. NEVER Andrew, especially. We've always played our own games, and he's never taken over while I was playing just so I could win or this kind of thing. Throughout the four years we've been together, the only help I've gotten from him is about HOW to play the game, and _verbally_. He follows a strict policy about not "helping other people win". Also, Andrew was busy trashing opponents on the other machine with his consecutive 20+ wins; I doubt I even said a word to him at all throughout our stay @ the amusement show. And lastly, I do believe anyone with at least a little cow-sense will see that with FREE gameplay, having someone "win" a round for you is simply ridiculous!

#3: Well I can't speak for Andrew (I'll alert him to what you've said about him and the incident you mention though), but from what I know, he is a guy who always "lets" one round to the opponent, esp. in a three round match and when his opponent has lost two rounds. I also know that if he realises his opponent doesn't know how to play the game, he will automatically let that person win one round (albeit in a very subtle manner, so as not to insult).

Besides, I really don't see what your problem is. Whenever someone challenges another person - and *especially* if that person is the challenger - the person being challenged is under no obligation whatsoever to "let" that person win any rounds at all. If you felt you were not up to standard just yet, simple: don't challenge.

To conclude, I feel really sorry for you. It appears that you are not only not able to take defeat, but you also have a somewhat convoluted memory of incidences which happened a mere three to four years ago.

You mentioned Nicole. Could she be the wife of Jason. She's the only girl i know who played VF quite well. BTW, i'm already 31. My regular hangout used to be at the basement of Peninsula Plaza which had an arcade there. Thats cause i used to run a computer software business there. That was like 7 years ago i think. Nowadays, i am very very busy due to my work in a multinational. Working for the "Evil Empire" if you know what i mean. :)
I use to hang around Marina South and played VF2 thruout the night during weekends. Sometimes moving to the arcades in Chinatown area to look for people to challenge. Those were the good old days which i will never forget.

    Pinkgirl,

That would be Colin Leong, then. Went to RI, same year as me, but went to VJC or TJC (I forgot) because it was closer to his home on the East Coast. Haven't heard from him in ages...

    Jimmy,

Nicole is married to Jason? Ah, I guess so, they were always pretty close... and I met them 8 years ago, so if they're still together, they ought to be married and stuff. Hmm, I used to hang around Lido Wywy, Bishan Funpolis/Wywy, Funan Center and Beauty World mainly during the VF2 days. Once in awhile, I'd go to Bedok Wywy or Marina South too.

Hey, I think we should remember the GOOD stuff about VF.I know that there are some dislike between groups of players, I can never understand why though.. but I think most of us are now GROWN UP... hey it has been like years since VF days..

Anyway, Is there any good place in Singapore for Challenges? I am getting really bored playing vs CPU all the time. Nobody in AMK is willing to challenge... sigh... I need some vs games..

Andrew says you're Christopher right? Quite a good player... maybe if you ever come back you guys can play again...

As for Colin, I think Andrew mentioned before that he went on to NUS to do comp sci I think... must be a comp geek now...

That was VF1, IIRC. Jason and Nicole didn't play nearly as much VF2 as they did VF1.

Whassup my home boy? Hope all is well, stop by and say "hi", okay?

Colin graduated from JC in '93, same year as I. Yep, that would be me. I'll keep in touch with you peeps on this forum, and will definitely post when I'm heading back to Singapore for vacation, hopefully we can all meet up. Funny how everybody kinda disappeared for a couple of years, then they're all cropping up again with the advent of VF4. Heh.

Ah... no. Colin and I graduated the same year, but I was Rosyth '87, RI '91, RJC '93. I live in Seletar Hills Estate, up in the North. Which is why I frequented AMK Funland so much. Don't ask me what I was doing driving all the way to Bukit Timah to play VF2 at Beauty World (actually, probably because the manager always gave me free games... lol).
