The fighting game community has never been so big and active throughout the US. Every quarter there is a massive FGC(fighting game community) event showcasing some of the greatest talents in fighting games the world has ever seen. For some it's a chance to see greatness and clutch on a level that we aspire to get to. For others it's a way to showcase your talents and see just where you stack up in terms of time dedicated to your preferred fighter. This is not fact or statement, it is a compilation of feelings and emotions I felt after my time with some FGC events. It's a self check for everyone out there that loves fighting games and is connected to them as a player, spectator, or creator.

    slide.jpg

I am no stranger to the tournament setting, the pressure, and excitement of travel worldwide for events. I have seen the FGC culture change. From old school hands in Streetfighter and virtuafighter to the new blood in titles like Injustice/MK(new version) and hybrids like SFxTekken. There is a loud and resounding difference between the culture back then and the culture now, media. Media makes everything so accessible and easy to share, it is a wonderful thing. There is however, a downside to media and all its outlets to the various fighting games. The downside being a very dangerous combination of the socially awkward, hype, expectation, pressure, and money.

From the time you walk in to an FGC event there is tons of people yelling and screaming, bags on their shoulders, sticks in their laps, energy drink stationary on the floor as they hold their spots in the chair of domination. Tons of expletives, saltyness, and headshaking towards opponents that have bested their dedication to the game. No handshaking after a match, just yank your cord and walk away. The "saltyness" seems to be a combination of ego, expectation, and perhaps puberty for those that apply. It's losing, and if not checked by a peer or mentor can lead to violence.

When watching a final, I find myself having to look past the goons taking bets with cash in hand on the players. No official stopping any of this, just allowing active cash handling bets to take place in something that to me is sacred. This isn't a fucking chicken fight in cuba. This is two young men playing a game that they enjoy to compete at its highest level. No one wants to hear you spray shit talk, you are embaressing yourself and your crew. How the hell did we let it come to this. Haggling from afar while someone plays his match. It's safe to say there is little sportsmanship in the FGC.

As these events get bigger and bigger, I fear the worst. A tarnish, something that lingers over the culture of our beloved FGC. If we as mentors and elders don't start involving ourselves in the fundamental growth of some of these crews, violence will manifest itself into a tabu for tournament events, and could in the future be outlawed. This is not something to take lightly, if you add all the factors in, something terrible will happen at one of these events. It is important to note, there is a difference between hype and bad sportsmanship. Allow people to play, respect those playing. Obviously if something epic happens you can cheer or sigh, but think of it in terms of golf. You aren't going to haggle someone trying to shoot or concentrate on their shot, let them swing, then haggle. I'm going to put a link at the bottom of this post, keep in mind. I wrote this post before I had even seen this. While not directly involved with the event, it's only a matter of time.

Betting, not betting, I don't really care. I just enjoy it when it blows up in players faces. Just ask Marn.

Yea. I have listened to many podcasts features various players and tournament coordinators etc mentioning that they've seen Japanese players set up money matches with people. Not surprising.

I'm sorry that people like you got deprived of a happy, safe, and NORMAL arcade experience. However, being from the "streets" doesn't make you trash that exploits a safe haven for people to relax and play their favorite games. The fact that you and others like you take such a blasé approach to the issue is why its rampant now.

You wanna money match? Do it in private, it should not be public knowledge. Open air gambling at an event, should be a zero tolerance offense and bans you from participating in the event again. We as a community need to quit being so numb and dismissive about what people do to put our scene and the rep of the FGC at risk.

We go to these events in order to compete or spectate. If we compete, we do not go up there for the lion's share, the acclaim, or the awards. We compete to test ourselves, to see if we have what it takes to make it to victory against all odds. As a spectator, you are there showing support for your community, your game(s), and your favorite players in the scene. In neither one of these do I see a legitimate excuse to go "street" as you so call it at an event.

Keep in mind, we're not expressing SHOCK at the gambling. What we are expressing is the fact that WE want it to stop.

I don't think gambling and lovers brawls are the only thing that are affecting the FGC I also think its because were going to a new hardware generation, people getting bored with there games, people afraid to try new games etc.,

The community that I'm from has shrunk due to those reasons, but other communities seem to grow I'm looking at Washington and Portland good job VF players out there and fighting game players there doing exactly the opposite of why are community is failing.

Where do I begin. Anybody who is appalled or outraged at as little side betting at a tourney needs to get out more. Seriously you must lead boring sheltered lives. I cant help but chuckle at people who say "we as a community" when they just registered here June 2013. "We want it to stop", what do you mean "we", Kemosabe? Speak for yourself.
Calling CEO a "sanctioned event" , /scoff. Sanctioned by whom, may I ask? the Federal Video Game Tournament Commission? There's no such thing. It's just a bunch of kids in a ballroom playing video games. Kids will be kids.

@Blondie :That kikizo article is just sensationalist journalism. It's the lowest form of tabloid journalism and if that's your source, your whole argument is pretty weak. From my impression you went to CEO , so how huge the turnout was for other games, and like most VF players, you got jealous and bitter . The Capcom games had a huge turnout, and VF didnt even have the slightest presence there, that has to burn a little. The posters here turning their nose up at the Capcom players betting, have no clue what goes on in the VF players community. The Cosby vs Shang FT10 was a money match, and the racist trash talking that was spewed preceding it got Shang banned. Wasn't the Sega Cup Kamais versus Hseiken money match solicited right here in VFDC? Wasn't Shiny Brentford soliciting everybody and his brother here to a money match? Like it or not, the VF player community is no better than the Capcom FGC, it just has pathetically smaller numbers. Two people betting on a money match is just as much gambling as 20 people betting on a match at CEO.

Take the stick out of your ass, and stop thinking you're better than those people that play Street Fighter, or Oh My God: Mortal Kombat. If anything, The VF community apes whatever the 2d FGC does, Street Fighter is the first place I heard of money matches. and now VF players are streaming their events to copy what made streaming the rage: Street Fighter 4 stream at EVO 2011.

Lastly if CEO staff should have thrown out the people betting on matches , what is VFDC staff going to do to players who solicit money matches or "chicken and ribs" matches on VFDC? Ban them? Because that's where this holier than thou hypocrisy is heading.

This is just my opinion only and not the opinion on behalf of the "VFDC staff." If people are seriously making bets and soliciting others to bet money on other people's matches (not their own matches) on VFDC, then yes I would have issue on that and would take actions that I deemed appropriate.

Generalizing and attributing negative characteristics to an entire community ("VF Commmunity," "FGC," other "FGC," etc) is never a good thing to do. Each community is made up of many different personalities and opinions, for better or worse.

The take home message for me when I read the original post is similar to Myke's:

I love this little cop-out (not their own matches) as if a first to ten money match is not gambling. Just because you are involed in the match does not absolve you of being guilty of breaking the rules against sports gambling. If it involves 2 people or 20 people, it is still gambling. Just ask Pete Rose . Pete Rose was thrown out of baseball in 1989 for admitting he bet on baseball games while both playing for and managing the Cincinatti Reds. The fact that he bet on the Reds to win did not absolve him of guilt. Now I say again , if you are going to throw stones and commence finger wagging at the 2d fighting game community, clean up your own backyard first.

Well that's not productive, but i'm glad you got it out of your system before you vomitted on the rest of the page.

It didn't really burn, I was hoping GT was going to show. If you know anything about VF players we're used to having our games, just not in the spotlight. I wasn't bitter, but it motivated me. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the high lvl 2d fighters. I DO play SF4 and have tons of respect for the guys playing the other games as well. I would say rather than burn, it made me feel more elite and different knowing I played VF.

Point in case. You're actually helping my view, I'm glad the community banned someone for their inappropriate conduct.

I play both, Street Fighter and Injustice, and if it's a balltop, you can find it 1 inch deep down dirty in my arse. Keepin it frosty, for a Nth degree lollipop.

People like me? You don't know people like me.. I was not deprived of anything.. I was groomed in places like that to deal with people like you and the rest of those salt bandits in public.. By the grace of god nothing happened to me in those places because I was known all over. Problem is.. You and your team can't tax the side bet action and now your salty.. FGC is nothing but dollars signs now to these savage organizers.. That's why I hate tournaments... Nothing is fun about them when big money is involved. Organizers looking to cut a profit regardless of turnout. Cap com games get all the love.... My blahzay attitude is because this shit been going on since a bullshit Fgc was created. Only the strong survive.. It matters none cause I doubt anybody would be running up on me... I have yet to see any fights break out and any event that's major.

This isn't outrage and it isn't being appalled as I've stated in my last post. I say "WE" not because I'm French, but because the point is there are more members in the community that feel gambling doesn't belong in or around an FGC event. Ergo, when I say "WE" that is to emphasize a point that people are agree upon.

I'd also like to point out that you are putting emphasis on something that I've been stating for a few posts now. If you want to gamble. DO IT IN PRIVATE. ARRANGE IT IN PRIVATE. My concern remains the fact that it was done INSIDE the grounds of the tournament INFRONT of staff, like you would a chicken fight. This isn't a matter of "Kids will be kids" because everyone there were no kids, just teens and adults. Its apparent Nth that you are just as much a sensationalist as Kotaku. You don't read into the details and fire off at the mouth without thinking or reading peoples post and that is a shame.

If you did read the posts, you'd understand that the MAJOR point here has been gambling INSIDE the tournament setting and not private* matches.

What I generally gathered from your post Nth, is that you are a person that either partakes in the gambling or makes money from the venture. It came off as a very defensive post where you felt personally attacked. If anyone is attempting (and failing) to act "holier than thou" in this thread its you. Now quit thumping your little ebook and get of your virtual soap box before you hurt yourself.

P.S. The stick while firmly in my hands, has played many 2-D and 3-D fighting games. Why would you put it up your ass? What you do in your spare time does not belong on this thread.

P.P.S. The only hypocrisy I see here is that people in the "FGC" that could be an role model to others in the community. Their ability to speak out against this issue, and begin its removal of the tournament setting would be a great step in the right direction.

P.P.P.S. Something to note, be it yesterday, or 10 years ago, when someone signs up to a forum to speak, learn, and partake in the community, they are part of the community. I'd find this relevant to the thread if it was a "insert character name: Max DMG Combo thread" and I said "All you do is P, 2P, and 6P as fast as you can!" in an "end all, be all" manner.

      Footnote:

Private* - "Chicken and Ribs" and "Money Matches" should be arranged on a forum message, over the phone, places away from the public eye that do not have a negative impact on the FGC.

Hide your food guys, this man wants to take away your chicken and ribs. You can say what you want about MM, but Chicken and Ribs isn't a euphemism for money, it's literally chicken and ribs is paid to the winner of the match between two people. To gamble there has to be MONEY bet between the two people. The key word is money. You can "bet a joystick" that you'll beat someone and that's not technically gambling (if legal stuff is what you're worried aout). But if you bet 150 bucks that you'll win, now you're in legal trouble.

MY FT10 wit Tony wasn't a gambling MM in the sense that Shang was going to pay money to both of us for competing, and only the winner was getting a joystick. Again not actually gambling between the two of us. What other did was their business but it wasn't really talked about in public so I don't know about it.

Anyways, if you hate the FGC and Tournaments so much, why are you posting here? What drive do you have other than your "hatred"? I feel like you're just tormented at the fact that you wish people had spoken up sooner so no one would have to go through what you did. I'm sure Blondie and myself aren't speaking up against this because we're salty, we don't gamble or look to control it. We're speaking up about it because its something that doesn't belong in the public eye or a public place. Your blase attitude about the situation just lets the issue spiral out and continue its acceptance. If people like you who had it rough because of people trying to make a hustle off someone at an arcade, you'd be doing ALL the future kids/teens/adults that could turn out jaded just like you, a HUGE favor.

Some places enforce the gambling rules more strictly than other. Evo, because it's at a casino, it's damn well enforced. Other places, it's not a rule period.

There are things I don't like. And I'm glad when people speak up with "I don't like this". It's defensible. And it has little to do with the words should or shouldn't. As soon as I read, "This shouldn't be happening," I think, "well... looks like it is. And someone grousing over it won't have a ton of effect."

I don't care much about gambling. I also don't think that gambling at an FGC event does much to tarnish it. I've read people talk about chicken fights. To me, the gambling doesn't mean much there, either... It's what's being gambled on that makes me think.

Generally speaking, If you want to gamble, please play VF Pachinko. Gambling has nothing to do with FGC. It is wrong by my book. If you want money and have faith in your skills, then you should participate in one of the many official tournaments that have prize money.

As for VF, it's a very exciting game already. Gamble won't make it more exciting than it is now.
