How many of you take real-life martial arts? I just realized that a lot of you do and so I decided to make a topic on it.

So, what do you take, what's your rank, and does it have any affect on the characters you use? as for me, i take TKD and have a black belt. /versus/images/icons/cool.gif just cho dan bo though. /versus/images/icons/frown.gif

I practice yang style long form tai chi. Also getting into Chen style. I don't have a rank, I don't care for rankings, nor participate in tourneys. I do it for health and healing benefits as it enhances my line of work. It didn't affect who I pick for my characters that I use in VF4.

I took Tae Kwon Do back in 4th - 7th grade... I decided to 'retire' at red/black. The only things I got out of it were good stretching habits and a better sense of balance. And I never understood what poomse was for... I'm not bashing it, I just found it to be, oh, extremely ornamental.

It affected my VF character choice in a weird way; naturally Hwoarang is my favorite Tekken character, and Lion is... sorta... like him...

i took up tae-kwon-do and aikido, i'm trying to create a good mix of offense and defense between these 2 arts, although i'm also currently training in kenpo. /versus/images/icons/laugh.gif

    aoi does aikido

well I dont wanna go into detail of what I think aikido is but its a relatively defensive martial art. There are parries and throws using your opponent's momentum against him. there are some disarming moves. I only took it for a few years so I cant say much more

Akido is the gentle art, unless your opponent does not know exactly how to fall, in which case you shatter his wrist, elbow, shoulder.

I practice Oliver Reed-style martial arts: thuggish hooks, forward elbows,
ankle kicks, headbutts...if you're a martial autodidact (lacking official training,
more street oriented), it's more about getting mentally prepared to do awful
things. Most martial artists who mix it up in the street are dojo trained but unprepared
for real violence. There are some hardcore tounament-type guys who are
bodyguards and bouncers, who use martial arts as applied to the street, meaning
they understand they are not pulling their blows or hammerlocks to avoid injuring
a sparring partner. Not being a hardcore guy myself, I don't get into desperate
physical confrontations very often, which is probably a lucky thing. In the end, if you're in excellent
shape and have trained yourself to be a fighter and not just a guy who knows martial
arts, you will have the advantage. EXCEPT against guys like, you know, who make their living
breaking people in alleyways. They're prepared to do anything...most martial artists just want
to stop somebody cold. Temper martial arts enthusiasm with that knowledge, and
stay out of fights, good people.

I trained on Wudan mountain for almost four months! Now I can catch a bird in mid-flight, walk on snow without leaving a depression, bend a penny in half and see into the hearts of men for evil.

The world moves on at a slower pace allowing me the luxury of strategy and planning in combat; Because of this I have given up fighting as it is typically thought of and spend my every moment in pursuit of the perfect moment where I will be free of the conscious thought and be free to move entirely within the way.

Sometimes I play VF4 and when I do I play Wolf.

I learned REAL ULTIMATE POWER when I was six.
By age eight I could become invisible, sneak up on a kitten, chop off its head, and not even care. I can also sprint through forests silently and get +2 just from having my spinning attacks BLOCKED.
