okay, since the last thread got completely spammed by what Mr.Myamoto supposedly smokes n' and archangel's super in-depth and superbly detailed insight to the experience, here's my view... /versus/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

    -------

Got up early, around 7:00am (in british time that is), me and some friends decided to meet at my house by 9:00am to leave, but of course archangel supposedly WOKE UP at 9:00am and did'nt come by about quater to 10:00 so we decided to play some SSBM while we wait (baka.... ) after hearing that there were already 15 people in line 1:00pm the day before, we already knew that we weren't gonna get a copy of four swords which did'nt entirely bother me as i already own the snes version.

We were ready to leave, getting together the things we were gonna get signed, i of course brought my pride and joy SUPER NES (which has a customized paint job and japanese katakana of "super famicom" written virticaly downwards to the left), my bro brought his modifyed orange gamecube, "Slayer" (at one point No.1 SSBM dynamic leauge rank player, also plays soul caliubar) brought a copy of mario sunshine, and archangel brought his basic PAL N64 base.

My friends and i arrived at Virgin at around 11:00am (no thanks to angel), as we entered, the store looked pretty normal, so we were under the impression that we were actually pretty early, i thought "HA! stipid brits don't even know what they are missing!". As we explored the store abit and went down stairs, we then noticed a small line of people, "meh, not too shabby", but as we walked further and furthur down that stairs, the line turned into a pretty big crowd but it looked quite neatly organized so i started to breathe again..

    then...

I noticed that the end of the crowd was just the begining, litteraly the whole downstairs floor was covered in people eagerly awaiting this man's presence, from gamers, to just mothers and children each with items of their choice to be scribbled on with permanent marker, it was a pretty overwhelming sight to see so many rare items, from original sealed NES zelda carts to mini Mario models! the scene was nice, filming staff were walking up and down with panning cameras, virging staff were standing around making sure people were keeping in line, GBA link-ups were all around the place (for some reason everyone had the colour blue), there were magazines, t-shirts (worn by ppl) and promo posters of zelda on the GC. zelda 64 music samples were playing in the background which got pretty annoying after a while.. but it was two hours before shiggy was to arrive, so standing in one place till then was NOT the fun part.

At 1:10 the whole floor was lit up by rising heads and chanting voices, although being near the back, i could'nt see all that much, i did spot a little japanese man jumping up and down on stage waving his arms about with the most familliar cheesy grin in the world - it was MYAMOTO-SAN!! my face stayed in one pose for leik 5 mins just glancing at what i am seeing, "this can't be real" i'm thinking.... then the line started to move abit, there were two sections, you had to line up to a certain point where the staff stop you, then after a while, a certain amount of people at a time are let through the barrier to line up in the last que. I then took a look at where i am in the que, and noticed that i only have 2 hours to get near enough to him, by the rate the line is moving it's not guarenteed.

"will i fail this one and only opportunity?"

as time went on, the line was going ever so slowly but time was waiting for nobody, i did however start talking to some lady with two young boys about how much seeing myamoto-san is quite important to them and the dissapointment they would face if they did not get to myamoto in time, i felt pretty sad for them, but at the same time even more determined to meet Mr.Myamoto.. By the time we got to the barrier, we had been there for about one hour and a half already, it looked like were were not gonna make it in time before 3:00pm, but my bro wanted to stay anyways, he wanted to be there until Myamoto was gone, all angel was interessted in though was getting some food..

to our surprise, the last line went very quickly, in no time we were already on the last barrier before going up to see Myamoto, although some idiot tried to push in front of me in the line in a suttle manner, but i managed to squeeze back in front after some quick ECDing and found myself right infront of the que to go up onto the stage!

    There he was.....

He had just finished signing off one of the little boy's SSBM game case and before the boy left, he stood for a while and smiled at myamoto, receiving a hand shake and a grin right back, he seemed to make all the little kids happy that day, and it made me think of the days in which i was that small, the look on the boy's face reminded me of how i looked after i had been handed a copy of yoshi's island on the snes about 7 years ago in the "golden 16 bit era of gaming" and it makes me realize that back in that day, gaming was mainly enjoyed by children alot younger then the age group of today's games, and it's something that myamoto and nintendo have always kept even today, which kindda gave me a warm feeling handing my SNES over to the one man who made alot of it happen.

AS i put my object down on the table, Mr.Myamoto took a look at it and read the katakana to his collegue, they both has a little smile, as myamoto got his silver marker out. I watched at his hands were drawing (rather than writing) his signature on to my beloved snes.

Once he finished, he slid it back to me gently as i was more interested in extending my arm for a memorable handshake... he looked up and smiled "the famous shiggy smile", then took my hand and shook it cheerfully (as he would). As i walked off the stage, i looked back to see how my friends are doing, but the sercurity were more interested in getting me back up the stairs. Suddenly, one of the film crew stoped me to film my newly signed snes, it felt kindda good posing like that with meh customized snes in my arms..

as i went up the stairs i met up with another friend who had got a copy of four swords off Myamoto (lucky git) and a new issue of Famitsu.. after that, we went and got something to eat (angel's idea) and went straight to play to win for some VF EVO play...

Wasn't that a bit.... Rude of you not to get his signature after he asked you about it (Even if you don't care about signatures).

It's funny you mention that, because that's one of the first questions I would ask Miyamoto if I met him. His games, especially Mario, have such a psychedelic undertone to them, I have to wonder if his team has a stash of magic mushrooms for inspiration. Latest examples: the surreal mud and slime in Mario Sunshine, and the way Mario breaks up when travelling to the different worlds. And, of course, Pikmin is a trip in itself.

Isn't it true that magic mushrooms were actually legal in Japan until late last year? I read something about that, but wasn't quite sure.

    ok.

super game boy + zelda link's awakening > ocarina of time, HANDS DOWN.. (if not, then link to the past possibly)

yoshi's island IMHO still defeats any mario game out, i can understand the people who think not, but YI certainly has more replay value than mario64, YOU MUST agree..

hey, at the end of the day, Miyamoto's games are the most consistently engrossing ever made. They're all wonderful games. The one guarantee you have with each of his games is that you will see something that is truly unique and enchanting. No one else can make that claim.

    no, take it back....

oh, and anyone who thinks mario64 has any replay value needs to be tourtured for a while, once you have all stars there's is completely no extra fun in going back to old levels and collecting grey stars (mainly because the levels are constructed in limitited square boxes or islands in the middle of nowhere rather than a left to right action stages such as the 2D games)... oh, i mean after getting a pointless 99 lives from yoshi, and watching him jump dramatically to his death that is..

One of the things I REALLY liked to do in M64 is to steal a Koopa shell and ride it all the way to the top of Level one /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif!! Turtle riding is just fun (and the soundtrack that plays while riding is my favorite M64 track ever) .

Wow. This shot to mind for me too. Then without the turtle I remeber sliding down bannisters...making different fancy jumps down stairs...goofy jumps down stairs & tagging the handrail at the end. My lifetime of skateboarding made otherwise pointless and perhaps mundane things in this game a load of fun...perhaps I do need to be tortured. Cool.

Bare_knuckle you are a lucky man. Maybe Britain has a bad Prime Minister and bad food, and a queen -whats the deal with that- but you had a Miyamoto visit which is more tnan we have here in the states.

As for this Miyamoto smoking stuff, why do people have attribute Miyamoto's talent to drugs. The guy knows how to design great games. He's not on some Magic Carpet Ride, he just has a great imagination. Anyway thats my 2cents.

your McDonalds is uncanny compared to us, put it that way... but hey, i consider myself more a Mauritian, and hell food in Mauritius is to die for!..

BTW, the queen has no deal, she just gets money for smiling and waving.. i'd rather meet ol shiggy than her any dayz.. /versus/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Well, as long as you guys remember to kick out Tony Blair for being Junior's lap dog, than everything's okay.

And, not many people know this, but America has its own version of the royal family. It's called corporate welfare. Anyone see Ken Lay in hancuffs recently?
