MGS 2 = 2nd most overrated game ever - Gamespy

Grrrrrr...

It's one thing to not particularly like a game and give it an appropriate score, but quite another to give a game 97% and then turn around a year and a bit later and call it the 2nd most overrated game of all time. (see the "25 most overrated games" feature at Gamespy.)

I was literally shocked to read this. Particularly their reasoning behind it all. How the bleeding hell can they give the game 97% (if I remember) and then basically say "Oh we were way off base. Sorry. The game's totally overrated."

I wonder if Gamespy have ever heard of the term "credibility."
How can we take any future reviews seriously? People buy games based on reviews a lot of the time, but what do we now make of Gamespy's?

Again, it's not because they think MGS 2 is overrated in itself that bugs me, but to lavish all sorts of praise on the game, give it a great score, and then label it the 2nd most overrated game ever smacks of hypocrisy of the worst sort.

(The comment about Gamespy Arcade is just as true too).

In the end the people that work at gaming publications like gamespy have to do a job, and for one reason or another they manage to look highly ignorant as they do it. I don't blame them really - if you work for a Playstation magazine then your articles are bias towards Sony. I doubt that the bias is lost in the publications like gamespy.

 

You're right, they must be smoking some good herb at gamespy these days to come with such bs ! They did the same with Halo, go figure. How do they expect ppl to have trust in their reviews from now on !? Next year we'll probably get : ''Well we said that VF4 evo was one of the best fighters of all time and now we take that back. The game was actually garbage and we shouldn't have praised it as much as we did, it wasn't even worth the $19 price tag. Next on our overrated list is Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City...''.

Their site was getting so lame and boring that they decided to stir up a little controversy to get ppl to talk about THEIR OVERRATED asses. '' Oh guys I got one, what about FF7 that one always gets them heated, lets add that one to the list. Oh and what about MGS 2 ?"

FF7 IS overrated junk. So is DKC, which I hated from 1994 and still do. Rare is one of the most overrated developers on the planet.

And it IS possible to be caught up in the hype, rate something far too highly, and look back and say "Holy shit, what the hell were we smoking?" When EVERYONE's peeing their pants over the HOT NEW THING it's very, very easy to get swept up in a crowd mentality.

PS. Now I remember why I stopped reading Penny Arcade. I've heard some really amusing stories about the guys who run the thing, but... XD

You're underlining my point, they're bad reviewers (overrated). ''Well GameAss.com and Dickhead magazine gave it a 10 so I guess it must be a good game. You know what lets go ahead and give it a 10 too."

3 years later :

'' Well you know what come to think of it I think that X game and X game was overrated, lets add it on our list. I never liked the game anyway''

Meanwhile the ppl who trusted their reviews and went out and bought the so called overrated game that they praised, well I guess they just got ripped off right.

ff7 was great!

FF7 was so good! It was different from FF4 and FF6... sooooooo what!? It still had the FF-style battle system. Materia fucking owned. Gold Saucer was great. Raising chocobos was fun (for people that liked doing stuff like that). The two secret bosses were great. Also... the graphics for the summons, the cg, and the entire game on the whole... were amazing at the time.

My only gripe is that the story got a little convoluted at the end... but what FF doesn't get a little convoluted in the end?

Bullshit. The story was a mess that was made deliberately confusing and unfinished, much like Evangelion, to make you feel like it was something deep and meaningful. Materia robbed the characters of any sort of individual traits that would make them worthwhile. Combine this with the fact that the characters were so unlikable that I wound up using only Cloud, Yuffie, and Vincent (Only Vincent and Yuffie appealed to me, and maybe Cid) for good majority of the game. (Don't get my started on Aeris. I hate female characters like her...) Chocobo Racing was sheer annoyance made for the sole purpose of giving you spells you could wipe out the final boss in two hits with. (I hate those sort of "Game-breaker" spells and weapons in RPGs - they discourage smart play.) Gotta admit though, Crazy Motorcycle is more enjoyable than anything else.

Even Xenogears is better. And you should hear me go on about all the problems with THAT one.

FFT was a better FF game than 7 ever was.

Hey, if ppl think Halo, FF7, MGS2 etc. were overrated, that's cool by me. We all have individual taste.
I think my post clarified WHY the Gamespy article pissed me off.
Another thing, I think any website that reviews games has a responsibility to it's audience to look out for games with tremendous hype, purty graphics or any other such thing that could allow one to give a game a higher score that it deserved (ie. overrated)
In other words, A large, well-established website like Gamespy should have acted a lot more professionally when reviewing the game.
I know we all have a change of heart now & then, but to go to such lengths is ridiculous, imo.

 

I love how Gamespy takes games like Battletoads and calls them crap. It's like... oh crap... it's only been 5 or 6 YEARS!

Basically they're idiots, and their opinion is based on nothing but getting more people to go to their page and bitch so they can charge more for banner ads.

The funniest thing is when people say: "Oh, people are just saying that it's deep when it really doesn't make any sense." If it doesn't make any sense to you, that's all fine and dandy. But remember, just because something doesn't make sense to YOU doesn't mean that the rest of the world is imagining things. Maybe people are just smarter than you.

FF7 is absolute garbage. FF has sucked since FF6. DKC was fun and penny arcade still entertains me.
