Online with little to no lag?

    http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6618&Itemid=2

    <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Why’d PS3 owners get stiffed on VF5 online?

Sega recently announced that the Xbox 360 version of the stunning Virtua Fighter 5, which is coming out months after the PS3 version this fall, would be online multiplayer-enabled. PS3 owners weren’t lucky enough to get that feature, as Sega AM2 said in the past that the lag in online play would be unacceptable, thus marring the preciseness that the series prides itself on.

But if that’s the case, why did the Xbox 360 get online and the PS3 got stiffed?

Steinberg explains that Sega simply “wanted to go to market quickly with the PS3 SKU†in order to release it within the console’s launch window, so that console missed out on the online fun.

“I don’t know how to explain it other than by defining [the VF5 dev team] as just the most incredible craftsmen-oriented group. They’re perfectionists, I guess is probably a better way to say it. They have always been concerned about lag time and that game is as real and pure as a fighting game gets. It doesn’t play around, it takes itself very seriously, and they didn’t want that lag online to be a barrier to people’s experience of the purity in gameplay.â€Â

While Sega was working on the PS3 version of VF5, it was also readying the upcoming Xbox 360 version.

Steinberg explains that getting online to work with VF5 for Xbox 360 was kind of a “skunk works†project.

“[AM2] felt that with the 360 they could make online happen, and with a lot of trials and tests and experiments figured out a way to do it where there’s no lagâ€â€well extremely minimal lag, almost unnoticeableâ€â€so we were quite shocked when they told us it would be online, actually. It was a surprise.

“…I think they felt like, hey, let’s surprise the world.’ ThatÀ™s how it all kind of came down, so it was one of those great, just serendipitous kinds of moments where it happened and we weren’t expecting it.â€Â</div></div>

for anyone buying a 360 soon....DONT. best plan is to wait right before vf5 release, hopefully by that time the new falcon chip will be in the 360's...meaning no more 3 lights of doom...just wait people /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

i have a friend who works for microsoft and he told me to buy a 360 console with a july manufacture release date. these consoles have the falcon chip.

he also told me not to worry because microsoft is putting in new heatsinks in the repaired 360's. this will keep your 360 cooler. microsoft has no choice but to fix the overheating problem with the 360.

the reason being halo 3 will be released soon. if any 360 game is going to cause 360's to overheat its halo 3. halo has now reached over a billion hours of online play.

oh by the way i cant wait to play version c on the 360 and any of the that say that online play doesnt matter is lying. i might not take online wins serious but i will be playing online.

any of you who say you wont or at least try online play are liars. more than anything online play will help people play VF better. remember we cant just walk down to arcades and play VF.

i think online play more than anything will improve the way people play. especially if your not that good. so think about it that way. if your not that good at playing VF well that will change with online play.

online play will only make you better for the real matches that are offline. oh yea by the way ive already preordered the halo 3 console at game crazy. i know it looks ugly but im buying it because it has the falcon chip.

i also preordered VF5 and halo 3 for the 360.

I've been thinking since it was officially announced to have online play that if they went the route of doing something like how GGPO works then that would be perfectly acceptable, because even across the country I have nearly zero lag on SFA2. I honestly never thought it would have been possible but clearly there are workarounds that don't impact the gameplay.

I'm not lying though. And how can online improve one's VF abilities?

Sure, we don't have arcades, but I'm (and most people posting here) willing to travel.

When I return to SF you wanna play? I can bring my PS3.

Trust me, online really really sucks. For any fighter.

If it can kill a game with loose controls like DoA, it will most definately kill VF.

Online is nice for getting to understand the game and getting comfortable with it. Getting good? Nah man, you need real comp.

i know what your saying dude but at least VF gets a new audience. believe me i dont take online play serious but it is a feature that will have more people playing VF.

which in my opinion is a good thing. people will at least understand how VF plays. the basics at least. more than anything more people will be exposed to VF excellent gameplay.

see there you go. i know VF5 wont play perfect online but lets not assume its going to play like total crap either. im sure any of you who own a 360 will at least play a couple matches online.

i think most of the people who are bashing VF5 for going online are PS3 owners. i might be wrong but who knows maybe im not. i think deep down inside most 360 owners cant wait to try VF5 online.

i personally cant wait to play version c.

Sorry but i dont agree with that in the slightest. SEGA or whoever seems to want to cater to the mass market for VF yet ignoring the nisch market that buys every iteration of the game.

Considering how badly SEGA ALWAYS markets VF for any console i dont see VF getting any more exposure or this so called "new audience" that gets thrown around. Nor do i see online play as a way to improve yourself at VF in my opnion the only way improvement happens is through competitive play and understanding. I dont mind an online option for VF but i hate people seeing it as the holy grail thats going to change the hole scene of VF.

Personally all i want from SEGA is a patch barring the online option and stick whatever else they have put into the 360 version into the PS3 version, and please no excuses saying it isnt possible just like VF being online was supposed to be.

more than anything its nice to know you have the option of playing VF5 online or offline. so if i didnt want to get dressed to go to my friends house to play VF5 i dont have too. its not like you have to play VF5 online.

now you just have the option. which is cool for the people who are always bitching about VF not having online play. for those of you who wanted online play so bad here you go. who cares if VF5 is online its a win win situation to me.

you give the people who love to play online games a reason to buy VF and play the game. in my opinion alot of gamers want VF5 online. if this gives them a reason to purchase a VF game then good.

i do think online play will help sales for VF5. VF purists know you cant recreate the same experience online. the game wont play as good as it would offline but lets not totally bash the game till we actually see how it plays online.

thats all i ask. lets see how the game plays online first before we start bashing it.

I think people are bashing the online cause they don't have it on PS3 :p

I've been play fighting games online, and everyone knows that it varies based on two players connection with each other.

A game can be 100% perfect if you have a decent connection with your opponent. And even games like T5DR is playable online so there's no debate really.

just wait till it's out gosh, and stop bashing the game just cause the PS3 doesn't have it, it's not Sega's fault that Sony doesn't have a proper online system like Xbox Live.

thank you ZeroEx. thats exactly why VF5 for PS3 wont ever be online for the PS3. unfortunately sony has a lot of catching up to do when it comes to there online service.

yea its free but ill gladly pay 50 bucks to have my games run better online. xbox live didnt happen overnight it took a long time for it to get to this point. so im sure sony will be playing catch up for a while when it comes to online gaming.

also i hate to admit this but if you have a game that is meant to be played online (for example unreal tournament 3) its probably, no its going to play better and run smoother on the 360. so if you like online play and downloadable content go with the 360.

the PS3 will be great though give it some more time. in about a year who knows maybe the PS3 will have a good library of games. i have to admit though lair and heavenly sword disappointed me. these were supppose to be big games. oh well
