My opponent is a dodge master.

My friend mostly plays Akira, Goh, and Sarah. No matter who he plays, though, his dodge game is incredibly effective against me. I don't know how to approach the situation. It only gets worse when I try to play Shun offensively. Near the end of our last VF session together, I tried predicting his dodges and just standing still, waiting a moment, and then throwing a move out. That sorta worked.

I make use of the breakdance sweeps and standing k+g often, but I'd appreciate some advice on what to do about these dodges.

I've been taking a serious beating from Akira lately. My friend has Akira's combos down pretty tight, and it feels like I eat one every time I make a mistake. Any other Shun players out there have any Akira-specific advice?

use 6,4 p (full circular) and throws more.

Vs akira, I either stay just out of his attack range to try to force him to whiff or play really close with quick jabs, 3p and then fuzzy guard or eteg when I think hes gonna try to get me back.

I'm quite interested to know how to get consistent with DMs.

I think to beat them you probably had the key with screwing with the time between moves.

Like If he's managed to get consistency by following the rhythm of the fight, because it's kind of your turn my turn, he can get pretty accurate at gauging when the opening frames of your response are going to be and react accordingly?

Fuudo seems to be a freaking master at this, but I don't know Lion too well so I'm not sure whether he's throwing out vanilla DMs or one of his weird evasive techniques.

I like to think i'm good at DM's and the key I've found is to have this little thought going on consistently in the back of your mind that's saying "i'm going to dodge NOW" w/e it seems like you're at a big enough disadvantage. It just keeps you on your toes. The thing is you can't keep dodging because then your opponent will throw out more FC moves or throws ( you can just ETE them tho)

if you are at a disadvantage it is really easy to dodge an attack but if you wait for an attack it is easy to get thrown, I don't like relying on ETE but it depends on the disadvantage, if it is small I usually try and backdash, often the opponent will try and get a quick mid in so I am ready to dodge at this point plus I am quite safe from a throw.

ETE's are a lot harder to do on the pad than it is on the stick. I use both pad and stick but the stick is what I'm better on, soo much easier to do advanced moves for me on it. I don't like dodging when no one is at advantage because then it's a pure guessing game. I rather throw out a fast attack or an evasive move.

I'd have to say that Akira is Shun's toughest opponent. It's tough to get close and if the player is especially nasty, you can get caught in a juggle pretty easily.

I suggest that if you opponent dodges you, perform /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif to gain a lot of distance fast. I've seen it in SHU's videos and it proves pretty effective. You have to time it right though or else you can get turned around or just perform a different attack.

Depending on what side your friend dodges on there are some half circle attacks that are pretty fast like /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif that could connect, and this is complete guess work, but have you tried going to ooshin stance? My idea is that you could possibly drop to the ground fast enough and his attacks would whiff. If that happens you can /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif to gain distance and pop back up to normal stance. That again is complete guesswork and I haven't tried it myself.

One more bit of advice that might be helpful is the use of /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif. Again running from memory, but it keeps you at a distance while letting you pop a quick attack that some moves whiff at. The only problem is that you're screwed if something does connect because you're opponent can juggle you.

Thanks a bunch for the input, guys. I'm going to my buddy's house soon... he's starting on Kage now, and I'm sure I'll be confronting Akira as usual. I'll try to break up my normal attack patterns and do something different...

After spending a lot of time playing against the high level Lei Fei computer opponents I figured out how much of a COUNTER master Shun can be. I suggest implementing: /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif dodges with their counters. This is a perfect example about how spacing is so important with this game. The Oushin stance is also a good way to duck under high attacks, so follow that with a /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif you take a good chunk away. I've been experimenting a lot lately.

I should also suggest watching the SHU videos. http://stage6.divx.com/user/toodrunk/blog/ Again, hope this helps.

akira is by far one of shun's easiest matches.

most of his moves are completely linear and can be beaten by evade, 2K, or the 1/7P+K+G movement.

if he is at medium disadvantage and tries to attack, you can KKP to beat any attack, including his sabakis.

many of his moves have large disadvantage on whiff (and no follow-ups, so you don't have the tricky guess of elbow-K like you do against jacky, sarah, etc.). if he whiffs elbow in your face, for example, you can hit him with 6PPK guaranteed.

as noted above, a general stategy against evaders is full circulars, delayed attacks, and throws.
