The fighting system is very simple.

Naruto games have always been about chakra maintaining as well as using the kawarimi jutsu to avoid attacks.

So it's timing + energy maintenance.
You try to make a huge combo, possibly attack with a stron jutsu, but leave yourself some options to collect chakra/charge up. Without it, you can only block against attacks, and if you get hit, you cannot "teleport" out of it.

The bottom line is, it's VERY simple. You play the keep away game, until someone makes a mistake and lets you in too close (kunai thrown too close against opponent doing "double jump dash"), etc. Then you continue with a combo and watch for a kawarimi. That's it.

And yes, it is freakin' enjoyable [IMG]

Hit me up on PSN, we'll have some matches: Griever_PL
And yes, I will also play Raging Blast 2. And SSF4. Wherever people kick each other's asses xD

Thanks for clarification on that Jutsu (Substitution jutsu, then).

What I still don't get is how to punish correctly and what is guaranteed. Sometimes a few opponents pull off their strike combos without me being able to apply any Substitution jutsu, even though I have got enough Chakra. And sometimes, when I can pull it off, I feel unable to punish them accordingly; when I start a strike-based combo, they will simply turn the tables on me by using the same Subsitution Jutsu against me, resetting their combo trap.

How do you punish correctly? When is comboing guaranteed?

Currently, I try to "main" Kakashi...

I'll tell you: when you substitution jutsu, you can cancel directly into your ultimate jutsu. If you are using a character whose first few frames of ultimate(Ougi) are invincibile, the opponent is guaranteed to get hit by the ultimate . Confirmed characters this sub cancelling trick works on are regular Naruto ( 9tails chakra rasengan Ougi), Kirin Sasuke , and Hinata. Rockman from SRK put the video up on youtube. Since only some characters can do it, the exploit/technique is considered game-breaking.

I think I have the first version of this on ps3.. Not sure. the fight system was not very complicated although the ultimate jutsus were hilarious movie scenes.

They have online matches in #2?

Thanks for the heads-up. No wonder I've found so little guides or FAQs on the game, its chars, and fighting system.

@Manji: Yeah, online matches. Great netcode from what I've played so far and a great and comfortable lobby and stats system (with editable avatar pic, title, etc).

It's good to know I'm not the only person who picks up a fighting game an d isntantly sets about bettering themselves and learning the system.

Even if it's not a competitive title.

The #1 was all about knowing how to spam block to get the 'just block' aka the substitution jutsu youre talking about?
If it works the same, directly linking to ultimate jutsu sounds really broken..? Does it really work the same?

Although in first ultimate storm, I think there were ways to get ultimate jutsu to connect with certain supports. Combo -> call support -> ultimate jutsu. There were only a couple support characters with which it really worked. Orochimaru and the whitehaired ninja who made opponent sleep at least. I wasn't sure if it was unbreakable or not, I never got to try it vs people.

I admit I tried to break the game when I got it [IMG]
I remember awakened mode Might Guy pretty much killed his opponent by getting two combos thru, if the support thing was really guaranteed. But I wasn't sure cause I didnt have people to test it with.

I suppose I could get this ultimate storm 2 and try it out.

In UNS1 the only really broken thing was Itachi. Itachi's awakening slows down time( but not himself ), making it impossible to escape his area of affect Ultimate(Ougi).

Notice how Namco/CC2 tried to avoid such an oversight in UNS2 by making Ultimates (Ougi) disabled while in awakening mode.

Sidenote Mckoy, if you are having trouble substituting sometimes just alter your timing. I find the slower opponents(Hidan, Kisame, Jiraiya) take more deliberate timing to substitution jutsu.

Fans get more enjoyment out of this game, it's the Ultimate fan-service. The biggest selling point is CC2 went out of their way too work with nara animation to get the character designs and animation just like the anime. Some moves, like Pains Ultimate(Ougi) are taken straight out of the show.
I suggest you watch the "immortals" arc approx.episodes 79 to 90. Hidan was hilarious in those episodes , cursing up a storm in the fansub.

Flyingguillotine, thanks for all those insights. Keep them coming! They are immensely helpful.

Seeing how broken and unbalanced many aspects of the core gameplay are (Turbo controllers, character universality, Substition-Ultra cancels, God tier, Awakenings), once you strip the game off its enchanting story, eye and ear candy, there is not much left that you would want to play - if you were an objective gamer. For I would never have expected how much appeal lie in the eye and ear candy of the game and its Ninja/Naruto bonus ("everything's better with Ninja"), because the fights do look jaw-dropping - and that's what drags me back to playing Ninja Storm 2 over and over.

    So disappointing [IMG] .

It's kind of pretty (miss epic ougi animations a bit), but it feels incredibly shallow, even compared to NA3. It feels like they've had pretty much the perfect formula from the start (Narutimate series), but then they've decided to exchange any depth the system could have for true 3d and tons upon tons of eye candy.

Paradoxally, after all the effort the developers put into making the game as close to the anime as possible, it kind of feels ruined by how assist-dependant the system is, since the series had always been about climactic *one-on-one* battles... It feels so bare-bones now with one combo, one special and one ougi per character.

Pretty, but after being really hyped I somehow don't feel it's worth playing [IMG]

I have a pile of guilty pleasure games like this, it's like EGM's Seanbaby's "The rest of the crap" . It's like an inside joke between my younger brother and me, I buy shitty licensed games to get him to laugh.

I agree with Jigoro, only each character has about 5 combos. One in up, down l/r L-stick , one with L-stick neutral and one air combos . But his basic point still stands, it's pretty shallow. Especially when any one of those combos will get you substitution- Ougi cancelled into oblivion.

I mean I like UNS1 and 2, but I'm a huge Naruto fan, spent 18 years doing several martial arts, including ninjutsu, so I'm biased. I can't say Im disappointed with UNS2, as I played UNS1 for two years so I knew what to expect . UNS2 is actually better than I expected, I didn't expect team jutsus , better (to the point of being overpowered) combo ability after a substitution, or the refined support system (more active supports) . I look at it as a stress reliever when I want to play a fighting game that's not too demanding. I look at VF5 as a four course meal, and NUNS2 is a poptart. Obviously VF5 owns this thing, but hell, sometimes I'm in the mood for a poptart.

In ultimate ninja storm 1, I think most of the supports were escapable by spamming the block fast enough. But Orochimarus combo that was too tight and the other ninjas sleep thingy pretty much guaranteed ultimate jutsu imo.

I admit I sometimes get these 'guilty pleasures' like this game knowing that it isn't really balanced. But its eye-candy at least.

I havent bought this game yet though, cause Im busy with RB3.

UNS2 is surely one thing: eye and ear candy that can compete with the finish of its anime counterpart any time.

So far, after beating the campaign, I really enjoy playing it online in one-on-ones or team matches.

There is more to the fighting system than was apparent to me on first sight.
