The suspension of Amare Stoudamire for Game 5 vs. the Spurs was the most bullshit thing I have ever seen by a pro sports league. The league says it had to enforce the rules. Again I cry "Bullshit!"

The NBA had an out. The league couild have excused Stoudamire by stating that he only left the bench after Stoudamre was hurt and before there was any sort of confrontation.

    -or-

The league could have said that since it is impossible to determine with 100% certainty that Stoudamire wasn't leaving the bench to check in, he wouldn't be suspended.

    -or-

Since Duncan left the San Antonio bench after a hard foul he should be suspended as well.

I have a theory about the NBA's Draconian rules. Every sport has fights. Every sport has cases in which players join in and escalate a physical confrontation. Yet no league has rules as crazy as the NBA. I personally think that the reason that the NBA is so strict is largely to ensure that the league remains palatable to the tastes of middle (ie, white) America.

People get in fights during sporting events. Sadly, it happens. But in a sport dominated by African Americans of urban extraction, the fighting takes on a whole different character in the eyes of your average John Q. McWhitey. Hence the NBA's rules about fighting, the dress code, and on court celebration.

It is a league consisting of black men playing for teams owned by white men in a league run by and marketed to mostly white people. And those rich white guys will be damned if they are going to let their games turn into one big prison riot.

I personally am going to try and avoid ever giving a cent to the NBA. I am sick of the buulshit league and there chickenshit rules.

It was a very bad call. I heard on the talk show radios when they talked to Stu Jackson and the commissioner David Stern about why they did what they did. Basically they couldn't really answer why Tim Duncan didn't get suspended. It's really sad...

Baron Davis threw an elbow to the head of Derek Fisher. But no suspension. But Amare and Diaw both left the bench and they get suspended. It's a shame. I hope Phoenix wins the next two games and takes it to the Spurs.

What do you think of Bruce Bowen? I think he's a dirty player. He should be kicked out of the league. But than again, if that was the case, John Stockton and Karl Malone both would have been thrown out a long time ago. hahah

Stockton and Malone were dirty, but not in the same way. There's a big difference between grabbing jerseys when setting screens a la Stockton, and the shit Ginobli does, like trying to get guys to land on your foot and kicking people and so on. He is a dirty piece of shit. Why the NBA tolerates him I have no idea.

Malone was pretty brutal with his elbows, but he at least had some skills. Bowen can only hit shots from one spot on the floor.

The Spurs/Suns series is a travesty. I am a huge basketball fan and I am honestly about to stop following the NBA.

I found an article that says basically the same thing that I was saying, here.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body"> Commissioner David Stern thinks the biggest problem is the perception of the league as a haven for hip-hop-influenced thugs. That's why his major initiatives of the past few years, other than the stupid synthetic ball briefly used this season, have been aimed at cleaning up that image. Those initiatives include a higher minimum age, a dress code and Draconian enforcement of behavior rules, which has turned the NBA into a technical-foul festival.

This thug business is a big issue with the corporate fat cats who buy the luxury suites and have Stern's ear. And don't think there aren't some racial issues going on with the mostly white corporate crowd having a problem with the young black guys acting out. That same crowd hasn't been heard calling for a crackdown on fighting in the NHL.

    </div></div>

I hope that the refs try to help Phoenix in San Antonio so that the Suns win game 6. If not, I really am close to launching my devastating one man boycott of the NBA. Quake in fear David Stern.

I stopped watching the NBA ages ago. I agree wholeheartedly with the bullshit that's going on in that league. I feel bad for the real basketball fans having to deal with this shit.

The threat of having your revenue drop from (bigot asshole) benefactors is unfortunately a big deal and it forces the hand of a lot of decision makers - be it their intention or not.

    Hello racism, *I see you.*

Stockton was known for elbowing you while you ran threw a screen when the refs were not looking. Mario Elle, and others stated that during his years when he wasn't as fast. That's probably how he got so many steals. Malone used to love sticking his leg out and kicking the players in the stomach while he drove to the basket. But those were when the rules were different I suppose.

There are so many youtube clips of Bowen stepping on someone's ankle or turning around and planting his foot to where the shooter's ankle might be stepped on. It's sad the commissioner isn't seeing that.

I'm pretty sure David Stern is shaking in his Nazi boots, lol.

When I read this today at work, I decided to read it out loud to some of my co-workers and the feedback I got was interesting.
My black co-workers agreed that there is a double standard and that racism, more than likely, had something to do with it.
My white co-workers rolled their eyes and/or made comments like "not the race-card again." and "it's not the same. Hockey is different, fights are expected in hockey but not in basketball."
My hispanic co-workers... well, they didn't really give a damn, lol.

It would be interesting to see a young Bill Laimbeer playing nowadays.

On a sidenote, I totally agree that some of those new rules stem from racist agendas, not all of them though BUT I also agree that some of those players were taking it too far before the new rules came about. I mean, if you were a team owner, how would you feel? One of your players, a representative of your team, is at a press conference dressed like a fool, how does that reflect on your team? Revenue?

It is still a business, after all.

Some of those rules are excessive and maybe even racially motivated but some of them were necessary, specially when a few attention-hogging players keep upping the ante, image-wise, trying to out-do each other.
They should have handled each player on a case by case basis and addressed any problems they had with anyone of the players individually.

well the spurs won game 6 like they usually do. This series will have an asteriks (sp?) next to it for a long long time. So sad. But lesson learned to Phoenix.... especially head coach Mike D'Antoine: you have to use your bench. NO running team can win with only 7-8 players. And also, use all your timeouts if you are going to play and wear out your players. So much for "eye on the prize" theme this year huh Phoenix?

Maybe someone from Utah from the end of the bench could take out Bowen. That would be fun to watch.

I don't think Phoenix needs to change. They had homecourt advantage. They lost Game 1 by a slim margin with their best player on the bench with a freak gash on his face that wouldn't stop bleeding. They lost game five by like 3 points without their All-NBA center. He would have made up those three points and then there would have been a game 7 IN PHOENIX.

I am done with the NBA for good long while now. The league is corrupt and racist. When you get on the internet and read what people say, there are a lot of people pissed off about the whole thing and yet other than Barkely on the first night I feel like the league tells everyone involved not to bitch about it in front of the cameras. I don't care how much the NBA's lackeys on TNT and ESPN try to pump sunshine up my ass. I am a basketball fanatic who is done with their bullshit league for good long while at the very least.

no drastic change. But come on, they got worn out. They need a little more depth. You always have to prepare for any type of changes. From injuries, to suspensions, to whatever. They needed fresh bodies at the end of the fourth quarters.

I won't say that they need no changes, but if they looked worn out in game 6, I would say it was because Nash and Marion had to play basically all of Game 5 w/o Stoudamire and Diaw. I think they would have beaten the Spurs in a fair series, but we will never know.

Pistons vs Spurs in the Finals. Zzzzzzzzzzzz...

too bad for the nba. They are getting killed in the ratings. But you know what's interesting.... they should really look to reseed in the playoffs. It will help keep the higher seeds from playing each other earlier.
