O.K. be honest...how often do you save to "save" your butt?

Hi there. I was playing VF4(regular) today and fucked up my rank big time! I was playing against Lau and we were both about even in the last round(5). Our energy bars were both kinda low. At this point I would have normally pressed start and got the fuck outta there to avoid getting demoted to Grandmaster, but I wanted to be a badass hero and go all the way. Right as Lau was kicking my ass, I saw my energy rapidly decrease as a result of one of his ridiculous combos. Suddendly panicing, I smashed the start button hoping I could pause the game before my energy ran out. But it was too late...the fucking guy yelled "K.O." and I was done. Demoted to Grandmaster just like that. I worked so fucking hard to get to Demonlord just to lose it to a dickhead like Lau.

So...with that story, I ask you this question..

Is there any shame in pressing start and exiting to the main menu right before you get your ass kicked to avoid losing that all important Victory Point, winning streak, or *gulp*...demotion? I have had my fair share of winning streaks where I ranked my character as a result of being 'HOT' and in the zone, but must admit, I have pressed the good ole start/exit and save button right as I'm about to get the living shit beat out me, just because I don't want to lose a victory point or jeopardize my ranking.

The way I see it, there's no way anyone can continuously woop ass on the AI and get the 30, 40, 50 or 60 wins you need to move up without pausing, saving and quiting on the verge of a defeat before that energy bar goes bye bye .

Do you consider this cheating? Have any of you managed to get through the Lord rankings in one sitting and without saving? Or are we on the same page here? I think Sega gave us that "pause and save" option because it can literally save you a world of problems don't you agree? /versus/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Yes, it's considered cheating. Although, the computer also cheats abit so i guess you're even with it.

I only did it once because I only needed one win to get to High King. So when I was down by two rounds and half a life. I quit and loaded the game again.

In the original Virtua Fighter 4, I did this a lot.

However, in Evo I haven't had to use this trick once. I've had a couple of losses, but my win ratio 98%+.

Are you saying they actually dumbed down the AI in EVO?

It might just be a case that I've already got a lot of experience at playing with certain characters after the original Virtua Fighter 4

Yes, but just remember. If you have an orb taken, you can always replay the match and take it back again.

Actually it really isn't cheating, it is just exploiting a fault in the game, a sort of loop hole that you can cut your losses with. Cheating would be like an infinite life code, or one hit KO code, as it defies the boundaries of the game, not how the game was programmed. /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes, the computer does cheat to some extent, though they also are succeptable to being fooled by some very cheezy tactics that they are not programmed to deal with.

Uhm, what are you trying to say? If infinite life codes or the like exist in a game, they are there because they were programmed in, intentionally or not. There's no way to defy the boundaries or "break the rules" of a computerized game. Exploit the rules, yes; maybe even rewrite the rules ala fpshooter wallhacks; but break the rules, no.

All the same, pausing to escape a loss vs cpu or disrupt a game vs another person seems clearly dishonorable, whether the game engine allows it or not.

@ EmpNova: I'm in the final arcade now. To be fair though, if it looks like I'm gonna lose I will resort to cheap tactics that I know will be likely to get me a win.

Gameshark has codes that clearly break the boundaries for what is considered "fair" in VF, such as Infinite Life, or starting out the 2nd Player with 50% life.

Even if they are programmed in the game, why do think they are called "cheats?"

Um, it's possible. I did it just recently, in fact.

On topic, yeah, I did it once or twice trying to get through the ranking match to High King back on VF4. I've yet to do it on Evo (well, I lost an orb once, but eh).

In all honesty, I really dont see the point. As I see it if you cant be a "Meandeathgodlord" without turning your PS2 off when you lose then you are only cheating yourself. Surely it is more useful to know what rank you really are without cheating. Even then, only to give yourself some idea of how well you're progressing against the AI.

Besides, ranks and win ratio dont really mean diddly against the AI anyhows...
"Hey mom, look I'm a High King !!" "That's nice dear..."
Umm, not that I live with my mom or anything...

Thats how I feel Wren. But with the orbs though, its a pain in the ass. I don't quit because I don't care about getting Vanessa's pony tail, but if she had some sweet item I would just like to collect them all and continue on playing like normal. Especially if you use your kumite file for vs mode.

phew, am i glad im not the only one, i thought i was gonna mention this and everyone was gonna call me a cheater. The way i see it, it is kinda cheating, but its easier, you dont have to comeback from a demotion, you dont have to fight a million times to get your orb back, basically, i only do it when i think it would just be a major pain in the ass to take the loss, and hey its a video game, im just trying to have fun anyway
