Last weekend saw the running of OHN8 (8th OzHadou Nationals), which is Australia's equivalent to Evo2k.

While VF5 wasn't featured in the line up this year (due to a non-existent scene), I tried to generate some hype and help promote the game by announcing a 7UP CHALLENGE - The IRON Kumite. The rules were simple -- play against me in VF5 and try to win 1 game before I win 7 games. If you do, I give you $30 (the cost of admission to the event). No entry fee, nothing to lose, everything to win! The challenger could even choose which character I play from Akira, Brad or Kage.

Depressingly, I only had 3 people take up the "challenge" -- a challenge that is only a very small step away from actually PAYING PEOPLE TO PLAY. I want laugh and cry at the same time! [IMG]

Anyways, one of the challengers was successful, winning on the 5th game. That challenger goes by the handle of "humanbomb" and is arguably the strongest SF4 player in Australia right now (he won the SF4 tournament at OHN8, as well as the SF4 team tournament). He also happens to be a friend of mine, and the brother of nin! While not a complete stranger to the VF series, he pretty much has not played VF5 at all, but got some last minute advice from ken and nin which seemed to serve him well.

This winning challenge was filmed and uploaded to youtube:

I'll save my post challenge thoughts (i.e. excuses for losing) for later. [IMG]

    Enjoy!

Lau with his special mid punchstring starter... just made for these occasions lol. Nice try at promoting..Ive thought about doing the exact same thing sometimes.

ps. You should really go for throw punishments when you could instead of PK.. I find it hard to believe the opponent would have escaped them [IMG]

Nice idea. Shame the pick up wasn't so great but 1 or 2 converts is a whole lot better than nothing. [IMG]

Have a little question though. Was HumanBomb playing with an EX2? [IMG]

Nice Akira Myke! It's a shame that only 3 people took up the challenge though.

Mooseking_Lion, I didn't actually enter any tournaments. I spent all of Saturday night at the event (7pm to midnight) "promoting" VF5 by basically people. I only took a break to eat dinner.

Manjimaru, yeah I know that I didn't make the most of the guaranteed situations (and although not shown, humanbomb does do the occasional single throw escape). In fact, I wanted to [4][6][P] after guarding Lau's [3][P][+][K] so many times but the left joystick direction was super stubborn so I opted for lazy [P][K]'s instead.

Marlyjay, humanbomb was using a Hori EX2 and I was using an SF4 TE Stick. Neither stick belonged to us so we just used what was kindly provided. But in hindsight I shouldn't have been so lazy and used my VSHG instead! [IMG]

While only 3 people took the challenge, there were quite a few who just watched and/or I chatted to in between matches. My only regret is that I didn't hype this event much sooner. Maybe next time!

Thanks for sharing Myke. I'm sadden even at the opportunity for free money only 3 people entered. Still though it was an awesome attempt at promoting the game. Good luck next time!

You would think money is a motivator, but sometimes it has the opposite effect. Dojo Chiquanshu sponsors 2-3 tournaments a year. We put up between $200-$500 prize money going to 1rst and 2nd place. When the tournaments are open to the public for some reason they don't join in [IMG] they just spectate (unless its one of our exhibitions where there is no prize money involved) then people jump in [IMG] There is never an entry fee to our tournaments, so whenever money is invovled its basically free money if you win.

Our normal players of course play, but the gamers that just show up once they see a $200-$500 prize I think they assume that the game must be really hard, or that the players must be really good and decide not to enter the tournament, its weird, I don't know how to explain it.

We only had one exception and that was a time when most of our crew did not show up for the tournament and we only had two guys, and three 16 year girls in the line up, then people stepped up to be in the tournament (perhaps it was the girls and not the money) [IMG]

I really wish you would film these events. It's not that I doubt their existence - it would just be cool to see them and the hype they could generate.

that was awesome, Myke. I really wish you had gotten more attention but just the idea alone was great and maybe...just maybe it will turn into a few more players.

    very cool.

Will do., Several of us have just finished up Grad School, and we have a lull B4 the real Phd work gets started, So we're looking at doing a tournament sometime between Halloween and Thanksgiving.

We will post pics on http://www.chiquanshu.org and make Dvds available to anyone that wants one.

I don't think it'll generate any hype though, because VF is really perceived as a niche fighter now. It has a slow growing
fanbase. As you know those fans really are sold on the game itself. VFers don't need the hype of others playing the game to convince them the game is worth playin.

What I am worried about though is it will be my first tournament using the stick (that is if I have the courage to go through with it) I was only mediocre on the pad, I picked up the stick and immediately gained 10 new skills and lost 100 old ones [IMG]

Feng Wei is my boy! I been tellin yall that I'm down with Tekken and Soul Calibur. I rate them very very high as fighters. I just consider VF to be better and VF mastery requires just a modicum more sophistication to achieve than Soul Calibur, or Tekken.

But Feng Wei's Kempo is awesome.
