Petition for lagless live play

I'm fed up with laggy gameplay in live. Seriously, if you have low bandwidth, please don't play VF online >:|

My personal approach to this issue has been to disconnect immediately if I notice bad lag at the beginning of round one, before any real damage has been done. If round one has been played, I stay the course, no matter what. I think this approach is legitimate: a laggy match here and there is inevitable, but there seems to be a subgenre of VF-players who seem to think lag is ok. It's not!! Lag is NOT ok in any online game, much less in VF, which requires lightning fast reactions.

Then there's the enjoyment factor: lag destroys this completely for me.

Actions to take against laggy VF play:

    1) Have AT LEAST a 2mbps connection

    2) When choosing a quick match opponent, do NOT choose a player w. a grey box connection. Even a low green connection is dubious. Around 50% of players who enter a match I've created have a horrible connection, so the responsibility here lies with the player entering the match.

Note: I know that the connection box isn't always on the money; most of the time it is, so get over it >:|

Note 2: I also know that service providers are sometimes at fault.

Final Note: If I'm alone with this, it makes me a saaaad Panda.

Nikolas, people who visit VFDC won't join a laggy match anyway, so what's the point of your thread?

I agree that lag is no fun and its elimination would be ideal. However, speaking from a networking perspective, its not always possible for one to know he has lag. Bandwidth can vary between users, time of day, ISP, etc. I could play you now and have a perfect game, then go play my neighbor next door and have a horribly laggy game due to his or my own network congestion, sudden increase in traffic over our pipe, or just a a loss of packets due to any random issue that can arise.

With that said asking others to not play because of their own lag is not easily done. Given SOME players have lag no matter what they do and in that case only they can make that call. Personally playing any game, whether its VF or Puzzlequest, if I lag every single time, I am finding a solution or just not playing.

...And the grey-green bandwidth indicator is lame and never accurate imo. Ive played full greens and its like I am in a turn based game.

Dude, you'd be surprised! Just last week I had a debate about the issue in Shout Box. Yes, there are people who can't see anything wrong with it, even VFDC members :l

    That's really a surprise, indeed.

I feel I adressed this issue in my post, but here it is again: I agree with what you're saying about "full greens" etc; I've had that experience sometimes too. However, MOST of the time it has been my experience that those connections are good. And yes, there are times when service breaks etc. interfere. Somehow I think we're along the same lines here though so no need to drag it out /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

It would be nice if Sega and Live arranged a server based system. Then have the servers not allow a certain ping number. This could eliminate tons of issues. But that would cost money and could end with people paying subs or something.

Now you're on the money! That's one of the central issues here. I think that the VF-online interface needs a serious overhaul. A simple list of players and their pings would do a great deal. Also, a "criteria" feature would be great: you could define the ping limit for players connecting to a match you've created.

Thanks for pointing that out Auvii /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

In fact I still don't understand why do people JOIN my games when they're grey.
In ranked, why not, they are granted an easy win with lag exploit things and anyway I can't do a freaking move with Akira, but why the hell do grey dudes join PLAYER MATCHS fights?
    I mean it's pointless ...

I haven't noticed my own bandwidth indicator, where can I see that?

Maybe I just never pay attention because I know I rarely look at the person who joined or I joined. Regardless, I've never had a match that realistically represented what the indicator showed, I know I mentioned this, but its frustrating. There are a handful of players that host on a regular basis that show green but I avoid because they have insane lag.

Auvii, I know what your talking about - who knows what the reason is, firewall or otherwise. Nevertheless I make myself a mental note to avoid those players in the future, regardless of their green box /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

    yeah, what srider said.

lag will always be present in some matches, so telling people with "bad connections" to fuck off is not really realistically gonna happen

Not true, Srider: I've had 90% lag-free gameplay over LIVE. Gears, Halo 3 and yes, even VF5 work fine with good connections. The lack of a good ping-based online interface is to blame here, imo.

True, it's not going to happen. I'm just venting my frustration. But I'm used to lag-free online gaming, and I really can't see the point of playing with lag. The problem is that untold hours are wasted disconnecting from "grey boxes" trying to enter a game, which could prevented with a proper interface. What the hell is a grey box anyway?! :p
