1. Hey Guest, looking for Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown content? Rest assured that the game is identical to Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown so all current resources on here such as Command Lists with frame data, Combo Lists and the Wiki still apply. However, you can expect some VF5US specific changes to come soon!

I'm considering joining the Dark Side, and at least glancing over frame data.

Can someone outline how one would go about improving there game by using frame data. Or if there is already a "how to" if someone can link it or direct me to it, then this thread can be moved or killed or whatever the mods want.

Thanks to whoever answers this. (not please do not respond to this unless you study frame data and use it in everyday play. I understand that you want less frames to execute than the oppenent etc....i am looking for answers to questions like, Do you need to know just your charactar or everyones frame data, obviously better if you know everyones but...)

So as much elaboration as possible. Thanks all.

One thing that is huge with frame data is just knowing which moves are +frames on block... If you don't know and are trying to counter attack, you will keep getting hit and not understanding why. I would say that's the first place to start and you would probably want to remember those moves for every character if possible.

Second, for defensive purposes, find out what moves you can fuzzy, what moves you need to CD fuzzy and what attacks you need to ETEG.

Third, you will have a better idea of what moves could and should be punished with which moves. Honestly, frame data will help you a good amount. It won't make you super-VF-master over night but it will help considerably...

    ^Obviously IMHO^ <---- Generic disclaimer...

Thanks. I was gonna ask for a frames for dummies explanation, but this looks good enough.

First and foremost imo you should start improving your understanding when you can attack, and when you cannot attack. And with what moves. Framelists help with this but its too much to learn all at once.

Learn the speeds of your moves, learn the advantage/disadvantage of your most used moves on hit and block, so you understand better what to do after those moves hit or get blocked. Figure out what the opponent can do in those situations (via opponent move speed). If opponent does something that should not work, you can punish.

Learn the moves the other characters can use that are advantageous on block. Now you know not to attack when you block those. The other way around, all the other moves are mostly disadvantage on block, so learn to grasp initiative with a fast move when you block those.

Figure out the concept of fuzzy guard. If you understand why something works in a certain frame situation, you understand advanced defense.

There are certain basic move speeds that help if you memorize them:
    basic punch 10f(pai, sarah, eileen) - 12f(jeff,wolf,aoi)
    low punch 12f
fastest mids are usually 14f with couple exceptions
big launchers are usually 17-18f or more
throw 12 frames (apart from 0frame throw)

Your not going to remember all that jargon overnight. So, if you have access to a printer, print away mate. Gernburgs, pretty much gave you the fundamentals on how to go about it. So yeah, there you go. Oh, and one more thing; If you see yourself getting beat by a certain by spammers, look at the frame data to that certain move to punish that individual. You may not encounter the same opponent again, but it keeps you prepared for the Next Battle, if you encounter that same character again(Not player)

Join the darkside luke, funniest thing is it helps me against some people more
than others if they know the data. Less random stuff tends to pop up =)

Yeah, just start out with a few key moves. The ones Manji listed are IDEAL to know and know how to react to/punish.

Frames aren't evil or bad lol. Once you understand how they work, you'll not only improve your game, you'll probably enjoy it more as a result. Will probably be a whole lot less confused when certain things hit you or when you get interrupted.

Don't feel intimidated with it all. You've got great resources, both human and not here to utalize.

I think the dark side should be those who aren't using/ resfuse to use frame data. It makes sense cuz the game is under a shroud of darkness while those who understand it are in the light haa.

You know what, you are right. I just took a look at the spacing and everything else and I thought it would all be outside the limits. But I think I can make it all fit in Word.

I'm thinking of updating the frames guide in future, and I'm planning to add images and possibly video to help demonstrate some concepts.

I was wondering if there are any suggestions or requests for related topics that could improve the guide?

I still think it's awesome that some people can be frame stupid (like me before hanging out here too long) and still cap wins against text book players; online
    and offline.

Thats because playing Textbook goes beyond knowing frame data. Frame data is really just the speed of your moves. No matter which way you slice it, knowing that is incredibly useful. Playing in a textbook fashion can give you a predictable offense/defense. Also when these types of players encounter an unorthodox opponent with moderate defensive ability it can be hard to adjust.

That and if you play enough, you simply use "what works", looking at frame
date is just a cheat sheet to what works so to speak.
