I've been trying to practice reversal-throw escape option select, using the E-TEG tutorial in the orig PS2 vf4 (not evo). In other words, doing a guaranteed throw counterable move, then when CPU counterattacks, trying a [1]+[P]+[K], neutral [P]+[G] instead of the E-TEG the tutorial is looking for.

I have a question about timing - it seems that in order for the reversal to succeed, it has to be input right as the recovery period for my blocked move ends, then followed up with the throw escape command. Buffering the reversal & throw escapes during recovery doesn't work; seems to be similar to E-TE in that respect. Buffering the throw escapes first, then doing the reversal also doesnt seem to work.
However, the prior tutorials on DTE and TEG seem to indicate that buffering throw escapes during recovery does generally work.

I'm just looking for confirmation that this understanding of option select defense, and R-TE specifically, is correct. Would this mean that in a situation with a disadvantage bad enough to be guaranteed elbow-counterable, DTE would at least protect you if they went for the throw instead of the elbow, whereas R-TE (or TE-R, which Im assuming from the discussion threads isnt actually an option) wouldn't help you at all?

No "noob" flames, please - I've done my best to search the threads on option select. It's hard (impossible?) to set this kind of situation up in free training with access to slow-mo and all the pretty graphs of recovery times. Is there a better way to practice R-TE in vf4 or evo?

R-TE would only work if they didn't respond with their elbow fast enough, or if they used a slower attack like a knee. Since Evo allows you to break up to 4 throws at once, my theory is that it's possible to perform up to three throw escapes after a reversal (R-TTE). A reversal, plus two throw escapes is a very powerful option-select (and probably the most sensible). IMO, it's best used after uncounterable moves or moves that are just barely throw-counterable.
