    Okay thought I would ask as you guys would be the best people to ask, but what would you say is the best way to prepare for entering your first tournament? Is playing online worth it because of lag? Im hopefully gonna be going to i46 this year (and poss svb if vf is there) and I just wanna better idea of what to expect.

    Thanks [IMG]

    Online play will help as far as exposing you different play styles and situations. However, you have to be very diligent studying frames and properties of moves. Otherwise you'll get bad habits if online is your only training ground.

    Lag skews the rules of the game online. For example "combos" that are possible online may not be possible offline. Also, safe situations online may not be as safe offline.

    Online play should be a supplement to your training and not the only training that you do.

    Goodluck and don't forget to have fun!

    Thanks man, I've been studying my own characters frame data religiously. And yeah things I can do off-line I can't do online and vice verser. Really I need more people in my local area to play....offline all my experience is vs skies lol. Also aswell as looking at my own frame data is it worth studying the rest of the roster so I understand what I'm facing?

    Play as much as you can anywhere. But I have to say you will find so much weird play in online rank mode, that if you can be successful in rank mode, it might keep you from getting caught in the tournament with some cheap move, or silly sequence you would have never believed someone would use.

    From the lowest to the highest ranks, it seems like everyone has some gimmick in ranked mode. Learning how to defend against, punish, and then prevail against those gimmicks, will help you build confidence, probably prevent you from being caught off guard.

    But always remember, Online play is significantly different than the offline play. If you don't have anyone to practice with offline. Then set special sparring mode/arcade mode in Single Player to very hard, and go against all the AI's. They will most definitely give you a work out.

    Yes, very much worth it. My suggestion is to organize move sets in their own groups. You can do this defensively and offensively.

    For example, defensively, I try to adhere to these categories: Small Disadvantage, Medium Disadvantage, Large Disadvantage.

    Small = -1 to -3 = I can fuzzy guard
    Medium = -4 to -5 = I can crouch dash fuzzy guard
    Large = -6 to -9 = I can't fuzzy so I need to Throw Escape Guard or Evade Throw Escape Guard.

    Anyways, this works for me, it may not for you. However, at the very least it can give you an idea.

    awesome, ill take all the advice into consideration and work out a training regime that best suits me. Its great that this forum is full of mature and informed posters willing to help other players.....you go on some video game forums and you get treated like dirt just for asking a simple question. Again thanks for taking the time out to answer my question [IMG]

    If you know who you'll be fighting and what characters they use I'd practice my combos specific to that character. Maximizing your damage against an opponent you know is using a character that you know about is a little edge you can get easily. My mixups are always getting trained up so I don't do any more training for that than before. I just might find out more mixups against a particular person I know that uses a character I'm aware of.

    Being consistent with your combos I think is right behind yomi in terms of importance to your game. I mean great you got that launcher or crumple cuz of your yomi, but if you don't know what to follow it up with to really deal damage, you're not using that move right and your mixups become weaker.

    Just to add, it's also very important to learn guaranteed situations. I can't stress this enough. Always go for the freebies I say. This alone will improve your winning percentage dramatically.
