PS3 OtherOS option removed with 3.21 update

Figured that rather than responding, and side tracking that thread, this probably deserves a thread of its' own.

Losing this feature isn't an option for me (as I haven't updated from 3.15); 50% of the reason I was able to justify the purchase of a Ps3 6 months after launch, was for this feature. And all the other options for programming a Cell using the Cell SDK, were and still seem to be £1000+.

I'm currently in the process of finding other technology I can trade on to fund a replacement ps3 slim for general lounge use. But oddly, the timing couldn't have been worse, as we just shelled out for a portable LCD with 4 hdmi's (Sony KDL-22E5300). Much of the reason for doing that, was to give me time using the OtherOs in normal day light hours.

I'm irritated by the need to buy a second Ps3 12 months ahead of schedule, but as easy as it would be, I don't blame Sony for this happening; George Hotz is my point of complaint at present, or rather the criminals who will use his work for piracy.

Many tens, or even hundreds of thousands of jobs, around the world, likely depend on consoles being piracy free, just to pay the wages of scientists, engineers & artists; or atleast the cutting edge consoles.

Sadly, removing the feature is a necessary evil imo, to eliminate the risks from such an exploit as George's; even if it does breach UK/EU rules (from what I've read).

This subject has been debated to death. Yeah it sucks they removed a feature that I pay for instead of improving or fixing the flaw they found. At the same time, Linux was dog shit on the PS3. I was using it for awhile and it ran like ass.

The RSX crippled installation of Linux isn't to provide a desktop PC; no modern GUI system without graphics acceleration is good, whether running Windows, Linux or OS X.

But the OtherOS feature was for learning to program the Cell, and these three articles on IBMs website (I found useful), might still be useful to others with a PS3(fat) still at 3.15 firmware or earlier.

    http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/software/dw/linux/l-linux-ps3-3/l-linux-ps3-3-pdf.pdf

The quote in his conclusion reads like a bad joke now “It's quite possible that future updates to the PS3 firmware will improve things”

    http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/software/dw/linux/l-linux-ps3-2/l-linux-ps3-2-pdf.pdf

    http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/software/dw/linux/l-linux-ps3-1/l-linux-ps3-1-pdf.pdf

The conversation has been done to death, but that might be because it is still important to 1-5% of Ps3 customers.

I don't know if you noticed this guys or not, but since the last update, I can't use my HORI RAP stick on PS2 games at all. I mean WTF?!! They take out some feature and along with it other features @_@... can someone tell me how to complain about this to fucking SONY?

    Exactly!

Fortunately I have more than one PS3. I originally bought the PS3 for the Cell processor. I have two original Fat that I have plugged into a Solaris/Linux Cluster. And one new Fat (only 2 USB) that I use 4 gaming.

I heard there was a class action lawsuit against Sony, if there isn't I know more than a few people who would like to file one [IMG]

I have no idea how it run's Linux as a standalone desktop, I do know that as a multi-core CMT processor node in a heterogeneous
cluster, its kicks ass! Especially if UR doing the kind of parallel programming you have a MIMD paradigm goin on. That is some processors I work on different kinds of tasks, but all the tasks are running in parallel as part of a solution to the same problem.

I originally bought my PS3s largely because of the CELL and the fact that they could run Linux. May B Sony should be taught a lesson. Taking out this feature is like

your Auto dealer saying he's going to remove 4 wheel drive from your SUV during the next oil change, because manufacturer no longer supports 4 wheel drive. So be prepared for regular 2 wheel drive after your next oil change.

HRAPs have been backwards compatible on the PS3 with PS2/PS1 games for a long time now. Even Pelican and In-Pin converters with PS2 controllers can be used in older games. It completely depends on what controller you are using now, the backwards compatible update for controllers was over a year ago if I remember correctly. If the PCB supports it then you are fine, like the Madcatz TE sticks are not backwards compatible on the PS3 I believe despite being made after the controller update to the PS3's firmware.

I use my HRAP2 with a converter to test out AE and 3S combos on my PS3 when I'm too lazy to turn on my arcade boards or boot up MAME. I also use a Dualshock 2 + In-Pin converter to play games like God of War Collection (which play like a PS2 game) or Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3 on my PS3.

my stick is RAP V3-SA, and to be honest I don't know if it's got to do with compatibility or not. All I know is that my damn stick doesn't work on 3S and that what makes me go mad .

I thought that lawsuit was filed by someone who hoped more people would join the lawsuit as alone he has no chance of achieving anything? I dont know how lawsuits work in US but I understand its possible to create some sort of collective lawsuit?

A decade ago, I did my 12 month paid work placement for my degree at a small Sony R&D department so I've got a lot of confidence in the best of their products, having met some amazing people that were working at the cutting edge.

Naturally I was also treated very well and paid a professional salary for my 12 months, where my course mates were all paid lesser student salaries at their companies.

I still don't blindly buy Sony products and still compare them with others, but more often than not, their best products perform amazingly and fit my lifestyle better.

The people working at the R&D department did the preliminary work on Super Audio CD encoding, and were responsible for creating the first all digital professional mixing desk in the world (the OXF-R3), which is why digital audio sounds so good today, I think all Maria's work was being done with an OXF-R3 at the time.

I also briefly worked for a football game developer straight after leaving uni, and I'm aware first hand the problem piracy has on development salaries, and company viability.

Not really realted, but I predict that within the next 5 years you won't see any PC games that don't cary a subscrition cost. Simply due to pirating.

That doesnt really solve anything and will just create more problems for the honest folk. Im currently boycotting Ubisoft for their copyprotection that requires offline game to have an online connection. I would have otherwise bought silent hunter 5 today, but I didnt.

In regards of Sony, I agree that their products have proven to be very good. Its their policies that I dont agree with.

I can see where you're coming from, and I really won't try to change your mind, but as someone who's primary platform of choice is PC, and works for Ubisoft, I don't care if I have to go through a few hoops to make sure the games keep coming out on PC. As high as 98% piracy rate doesn't a viable market make.

I really should have started a new thread, sorry for the derail.
