Ever since the last PSN update, my PS3 cant play dvd roms or movies. Anyone else have this problem??? Currently my PS3 can only play blu Ray discs.

I figured it out on my OWN: aparently Devil May CRY 1 is just too old a PS2 game toplay on a 60 gig PS3. When I tried toplay it,not only did it fail, but it fouled upmy PS3s emulator and DVD player.

I had to put in an EARLY generation DVD "THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT" to get DVDs toplayagain on my ps3. After that My PS3 emulator started accepting PS2 games again, just not DMC1.

A little trial and error goes a long way. At least I didnt erase and format my PS3 HDD. That was my last resort.

    I have a similar problem. My PS3 won't play music CD's correctly.

It only "reads" certain tracks. It will show the total tracks on the root folder but when you go to individual tracks it will not show all but only select tracks and thus can't play them.(1,4-7,11-14)

CD's that I have used before the problem started play with no problem though. Only CD's that I have never placed seem to be affected. I have noticed that the PS3 keeps a cache of info stored on the hard drive of my CD info and uses it when I load a CD in. I do not know how to clear out the cache. It is not the same cache used for the Internet Browser as I wiped that clean but still had my CD info problem.

Also I get an error when the PS3 tries to lookup CD info on its Internet database initially. I think that might be also be part of the problem.

I had this problem before and it fixed itself but last I checked it came up again. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

I have a 60GB model, I don't think its that big a deal for me to reformat my PS3 but I wish there was a solution. I haven't tried contacting Sony support on the matter. I did look around Sony's PS3 troubleshooting forum and saw no other incident like mine.

Shag, did you try putting the PS3 back to factory settings(Holding I/O for ten seconds then releasing it when it bleeps, the manual has more info) ? It doesn't erase your game saves at all, but it might erase the "Cache" for the CD info problem. Let me check...........

Back up your hard drive to a Western Digital external HDD. Use the system menu and click "backup". Before you do anything. Most likely The laser is off in terms of calibration, and restoring the system wont help. Taking a closer look at The DMC disc I put in my PS3, it seems gamestop used a "GAME DR" on it. Its too smudged to see the disc clearly. My guess is the PS3 is more calibrated for Blue rays than DVDs.

I mean my old PS2 is 5 years old, and the laser is practically shot, but IT can read old Game Dred games. I'm going to wait to see if the next system update changes anything.

Many of the first PS3's had issues with their laser. I had to send mine back twice. First the drive just stopped working completely and then the second time it stopped reading random discs. I say give them a call, if you didn't try to mod it they will probably offer a fast return and fix.

Shag, If you remove the lithium battery from the PS3, will that erase the cache?

That sucks. Buy a Dual Shock 3,dude. I got one along with the japanese GT5 prologue. DMC4 , Uncharted and a few others work with it. Resistance and Stranglehold DONT haveany rumble features yet. But yeah I cant find my Ps3 battery yet, unless it's buried realy deep into the system. I just want to try the battery disconnect gimmick to see if it works before I spring for a new blue ray laser.

I checked it out, the PS3 does NOT have a battery.
I dont know how to clear the cache. Ill look into it. There might be a Ps3 version of "firmware toolbox" program(like the XB360 has) that will be clear the cache.

Im pretty sure My PS3s failure to play DVDs is due to the DVD controll chip overheating, not the laser itself. Thing is, I kept watching youtube on my Ps3 for like 3 days straight, and I think I overheated the chip.

Its just like the Ba chips on PS2, they got TOO hot (because sony didnt Heatsink them) an d then they couldnt order enough voltage to be sent to the DVD player so the laser couldnt make enough passes to read DVD-rs. I the equivalent chip in the PS3 got overheated. once those bust, they bust.
