Random question about name pronounciations

Not having much knolwedge of how the romanised spelling of Chinese words works, I'm wondering if anyone knows if I've been pronouncing these names correctly over the last decade or so:

Lau - is it "law" or is it more like "la-oo"? I've been using "la-oo".

Pai - "pie" or "pay"? I've always said "pie".

Shun - "shun" phonetically, as it's spelt, or "shoon"? I've always called him "shun" but I heard recently "u" in chinese is more like a double "o" sound.

Lei-Fei - "lee-fee", "lay-fay", "lee-fay" or "lay-fee"? I call him "lay-fay".

 

If you turn the commentators on they will say the names correctly.

Lau rhymes with "now"
Pai is like pie
Shun is like shoon.
Lei fei is Lay-Fay

 

Sorry, did't know that about the commentary - I never turn it on because I find the guy's voice so annoying I want to punch a kitten in the face. I turned in on literally just the once and I was like, "Well, that's enough of that!"

 

I don't blame you. I hated them at first but now it feels weird playing with them turned off

 

Cheers for the pronounciations by the way. I still find it hard to not pronounce Shun and Lau in my head the way I always used to.

Why can't they just spell Chinese phonetically when written in roman characters like they do with Japanese (well, more or less anyway)? That's a serious question btw, I'd actually quite like to know how that came about.

Also Lion is pronounced Leon, my brother and I thought that Kage was pronounced as Cage but is pronounced as Ka-gay. I learned this from the commentator feature in VF5.

 

I'm still shocked that Wolf is pronounced "Voolf".

 

It isn't. It's pronounced as U-ru-fu, with the last "u" being a silent vowel (more or less).

A-oh-eee or however it's pronounced is the only one that still gets me, no matter how much I hear it I will never feel comfortable saying her name out loud.
