Region selection = Country, not continent

Hi all. I've read somewhere on the forums here that people have said that when you set the region selection to Same Area, it means that it will only look for players in Europe/US/Asia. I don't think this is the case, I think it applies to country only. Since there are very few VF players in my country, Ireland, whenever I set it to Same Area, it comes up with "No Opponents Found" so I'm forced to set it Worldwide and take my chances playing against a US, JAP or EU player, with the last one being my best option in terms of lag. So its quite frustrating to come across a button masher when there is a TON of lag to work with. I know I'm meant to work around button mashers and I'm fine with that but when there is lag and my counter attacks' inputs are nulled out because of the lag, I can't play properly.

Anyway, I've decided to add the EU players here from VFDC to my PSN account to get to play against EU players but this will only work with Player Match / Room Match, right? I can't invite another EU player for a Ranked match which, I know, its not a big deal but it would be nice to add a hint of pressure to the match to make it more interesting when its Ranked.

sorry to bump in but i have a similar/related question:

for example, you set to "Worldwide", does it mean you can ONLY encounter people who also set their connections to "Worldwide" ?

or even if they are set as "Same Area", just as long as you yourself is set to "Worldwide", will you be able to encounter them as well?

I'm mainly asking because i'm in the US, but i use a JPN PSN account to go online with. Now by default, "Same Area" gives me players from Japan ofc, no qualms with that. And when I switch to "Worldwide", I'm no longer connecting with JPN PSN anymore, but with other regions, naturally.

But I don't know if this is just PSN, but are there really few people playing? I'm wondering if this is because most players are just set to "Same Area" and those who aren't also on "Worldwide" won't show up.

    hope i'm not confusing, peace

I have the very same experience.
    ...
The solution is very simple: If you challenge someone (or get challenged), wait a little on the VS screen before you press X to get ready and check their connection. If you do not see 3-bars full-green icon, just press O and refuse.
May be annoying sometimes when you just keep running into low-connection players for a long time in a row, but overall gaming experience is significantly better.

    Just my 3 cents.

Same area means Europe for me. I even get some American players I get a good connection with showing up. This is XBL though. Seems to be different for both consoles. You're all playing on psn, right?

I can confirm that on the psn region selection = country.
I live in Italy and when I set "same area" I find only italian players (which are very few, so I never use it).
    Quite retarded imho.

I play on 360 and "same area" = Europe. This is prefereble since games like SSF4 had "same area = same country" wich didn't turn up many results for me.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that it's same country.
As an Aussie, whenever I set it to "Same Area" I can never find opponents. Or, rarely.

I usually just have to set it to Worldwide and take whatever I can get.

SAME AREA - determines by your region of PSN ID (not region of the digital content VF5FS (PSN Store), not your physical IP).
And "area" is a country (i.e. UK players, Russian players, EU players - are different "area" and not found themself)
=> Want to play with your countryman, play VF5FS from your country PSN ID.

WORLDWIDE - all players in one place, not determines by any factors, already the same for all players.

SAME AREA is NOT included in WORLDWIDE: two countrymen, one with "worldwide" , second with "same area" will never meet; they will meet only when both will have IDENTICAL Matching Range! Its an issue, because Worldwide guys must see Same area guys.

RESUME: if you want to meet many good VF players with good connect - just always set Matching range on WORLDWIDE (and no matter what are your PSN ID region, VF5FS game region, physical IP - they do not affect on matchmaking)!
