    No matter what the situation is, as long as someone is pretty far ahead on life, and the opponent is backed to the edge of the ring, you often see the backing up simply for fear of the risk of ringing yourself out, or the opponent ringing you out. It's that simple, no matter what options both players have. Otherwise, they wouldn't have backed up.
