    I also miss the detailed descriptions of the moves that were in Shenmue 1, how you could highlight the move and bring up a splash screen that showed more details of the move.

    I'm pretty disappointed in the QTEs in Shenmue III, I liked them a lot in Shenmue 1 & 2, but they're really bad in 3. Instant-fails, no consistency in the buttons/action correlations. IT's a downgrade in every way from the first two games.

    I wouldn't say they were bad, just brutal and uncompromising. If halfway through Niaowu, and so far all the QTEs require Ninja reflexes. You arent supposed to be able to predict what the button press is, that would defeat the purpose of the minigame. Its like Ys went softcore on the real time fighting and hardcore on the QTEs.

    The funny thing about QTE's is when Shenmue first came out, EVERY industry journalist hated the QTE's and talked shit about them. Yet for some reason, the QTE's popped up in every major publisher title after that for the next 15 years! God of War, resident evil, Naruto, DBZ, even MGS to some extent and jHeavenly Sword. It was like the ironic legacy of Shenmue.

    Yep. Yet strangely, when those games did it, those same journalists, strangely seemed to like it. And claimed it to be innovative in those games.

    Hey Mademan, if you are up to the QTEs, that means you no doubt beat Guilin chapter by now. When you get to Niaowu, go to the main street an look to the right for Guan Yu Kung Gu shop. To the right of that is a little alley labeled Rose Garden. Go down there and there's a fight club! The fighters have some of the best character designs Ive seen in Shenmue III yet. If you beat the first five fighters and keep repeating that process, you will have enough tokens for the really cool token prizes. Im going to farm it so I can get that Jacky-like satin jacket for Ryo.

    Yes! I remember seeing Rose Garden earlier when I arrived but didn't think much of it at first. Then a few days ago I ventured in and found the fight club! It's really cool how it's a shady kind of casino/fight club off the main promenade. I got a few fights in and have to go back to revisit soon. Really awesome feature in Niaowu, felt very much like Shenmue II Kowloon's secret areas.

    I bought the game but I haven't touched it cause I am busy with my board exam and what not and this type of games takes forever to run through.

    I def wasn't happy with how the development went but I expected this. I feel like the announcement was a stunt done by Sony to get their conference successful and then they just deserted the funding ( of course I am pulling this outta my Head, I have no proof and Suzuki has stated otherwise actually).

    When I look at what AM2 pulled with the first two games where the characters' models still look good to this day and then what the new guys did, I feel down.

    SEGA should have been more protective of their IP. Suzuki deserves better too.

    Anyway, please don't do VF6 this way... I'd rather it die with VF5FS than gets butchered with bad funding and immature team.

    Wow, I see a lot of hyperbolic statements from a dude who leads off by saying he hasn't even played the fucking game. Your logic is blowing my mind. First of all, if youre still in school you probably werent even born when Shenmue was released and dont know jack shit about Shenmue. Two, if youre a college kid you are probably broke and cant afford a PS4 Pro and a 4K tv. I've been playing Shenmue III on my 4K Oled and it looks amazing, especially the outdoor areas. Just out of curiosityI installed ShenmueIII on my old PS4 vanilla and played it on my now 13 year old Sony Bravia 1080p tv. It looks like Shit. Take for example the inn keeper at the Nioawu Hotel. Her facial expressions don't animate as much as in the PS4 pro version. Her face looks so stiff and weird, you would think she just had a stroke.

    The weird part is , it looks like the PS4Pro mode is actually the PC version. I have the PC trial version , and when you use L trigger to look, it has a crosshair on the screen, so does the PS4PRO version. The PS4 vanilla version doesnt have that. Also on the PS4 vanilla version, the fishing game is different, theres a third direction to push: down. Vanilla version lets you adjust vertically where you cast your lure. Thats not in the PS4 Pro version. Also on the PS4 vanilla version, on the loading screen loading meter it actually writes " loading " on the meter as its filling up.

    So in summary, Shenmue III sucks for poor people.

    Dude chill.

    I wasn't critical of the game or how it plays. I just wrote about what I thought was such a wasted opportunity to get the best exp. The characters' models look like crap compared to what AM2 pulled back in the day.

    Oh and Yu Suzuki himself said that he would give his game a 6.5/10. I think he is
    A) Old enough since he developed it
    B) Rich enough since he is outta college and built it on both PS4 models.
    C) has actually played it start to finish.

    I'm not sure why you think Sony pulled the funding, especially since you admitted you made that up entirely.
    Let's be honest, the game didn't have the budget it could have used, but more importantly the development team isn't AM2-calibre. YSNet has never made a full console/PC game before, and it looks like it was a rag-tag group of people pulled together for a project rather than arguably the greatest development studio ever in AM2.

    If Sega were more protective of this IP, then we'd never get a sequel. The only way it would happen is them letting Suzuki try something, as Sega seemed to have no interest in continuing the series and even blew a ton of money trying to do a silly remake instead of making perfect ports of the original games to start with.

    I do agree, Sega in general should be more protective of their IPs, but I'm more worried about the crap looking Panzer Dragoon remake and House of the Dead Remake than Shenmue III, which looks to be replicating the spirit entirely but falls over in funding and experience. This can be fixed with a potential sequel probably!

    As for VF, I doubt Sega would give VF the same treatment of outsourcing, VF is probably the most iconic Sega franchise in Japan, and certainly one of their most loved/praised franchises in history.

    When did Suzuki say he'd give it a 6.5/10? Was that the rapid-fire interview he did a while back? I remember him saying he'd give it a 7/10 or something like that.

    I think that Shenmue III has some janky characters and fight animations, but the atmosphere and locations are great (for the most part, Niaowu looks weird with too much bonkers stuff like the arcades that feels out of place, although maybe Niaowu/Phoenix Town was really a tacky tourist trap back in the day?), and the music is perfect, one of the best soundtracks I've heard in years.

    I'd love them to do a Shenmue 4 and build on what they've done and improve combat, QTEs and character models. Maybe clean up the locations a tiny bit and bring back more dialogue options/sequence breaking like the first two, and it would be up there with the old games. As it stands, I think Shenmue III falls short of the previous game's standards, but I'm glad it exists, there's still moments of magic I thought I'd never see.

    Yeah I am glad Suzuki got to do it and I'd love it if he managed somehow to do the 4th one with hopefully more input from AM2.

    As for the funding thing, when Sony announced it, I thought they would be more involved and kinda chunk more money to it. I know they made clear that it's a Kickstarter game and that they helped but aren't the main party behind the funding.

    It's just me wishing it had more funds and more time. I know it's very faithful to the fans and I love that... It's just... I am sad it used to throw benchmarks in this genre to game that got funded through Kickstarter with inexperienced Dev. Suzuki is talented and I think it's the VERY BEST it could be.

    Mademan amen. This is not a spoiler because its telegraphed in the plot. I just fought the gang of Red Snakes in their hangout, and mannnnn. The fight was intense. It was the first time having to fight more than two opponents. Its not like Shenmue 1 and 2 where the low level thugs go down with two hits. You have to beat a raincheck into them to take them out!! I was playing on hard mode, and damn was it challenging. I only used one snake venom vial and refused to buy more . Its possible to wall combo opponents when you get them slumped against the wall. There are just-frame evades that cause time to slow down. It is really satisfying landing this when you're outnumbered. Also, if you just-frame block your opponents , attack, it becomes a parry, like AOI's. Free punches.
    Playing the game on hard mode really makes you learn the mechanics of a game, its the only way you'll progress.
    Anyway, yes, I would have prefered the old command moves, but the fact that you still have a litany of moves available gives you more agency in a fight than say, Yakuza, another favorite of mine. I'm almost done with the Nioawu section, and I say so far the game is a solid 8.5 out of 10.

    Yu Suzuki has stated multiple times over the years that he doesnt play video games. How much would you weigh that score, especially because you no doubt cherry picked it out of context. Creators are always the biggest critics of their work. Some film makers say films arent finished, they are abandoned. Meaning there is always more they want to put into the project but they run out of time and have to release. The same is so with games. Yu Suzuki has boundless ideas and we will see more of them realized in Shenmue 4. Screw the haters.

    I didn't know about the parry, the evade always felt clunky to me. I'll try it out next fight, because that sounds really useful.
    I also found that Shinbone Smash is a really good move, you can hit the opponent on the ground/crumpled with it for free damage!

    I will say, one thing I don't like about Shenmue III is how they force you to avoid conclusions sometimes. For example, just now I knew exactly who I needed to talk to for the plot progression, but the character just mysteriously disappeared until I talked to some others first. I don't remember this kind of thing happening in the previous games where you had more freedom to solve the quest your own way. I figure this is also a potential time/budget restriction?

    "Beat up Guizang, then I'll tell you how to find Lan Di" Same thing. Looking for Lan di, Nozomi gets kidnapped, so you have to stop your investigation to free her. Charlie is the guy you need to find to lead you to Chai, so You have to beat up and interrogate 20 people before you find Charlie. Sm2 you need to find Zhu Yunda so you spend 2/3 of the game talking to every person in Hong Kong to find him. Dude, I could go on and on, the whole game is structured that way. Its a mystery/Hardy boys Nancy drew detective game. You have to go through procedures to get to where you want. Shenmue III is no different. Its a question of whether you have the patience for it, or whether since you are not awestruck by the state of the art graphics like you were in Shenmue 1(IF you actually played it in 1999-2000) you can't see the flaws in the mission structure.

    A good example of lack of incredible graphics failing to distract you from mundane acts is Assassins Creed 3. That Game was TRYING to do the Shenmue thing of forcing you through innoculous tasks (playing as a child in the beginning) but because AC3 lacked State of the art graphics Instead of immersing you amazing you, It tried your patience with the kid section.

    Its not that S3 is not like the old Shenmue's, its too much like it and the instant gratification craving millennials might not be suited for it. Wow, no wonder we had to wait 17 years for a sequel and it was funded by actual fans.

    Ah see I'm talking about something different, because all the stuff you mentioned I love! I loved revealing the story through dialogue to learn more. What I'm talking about specifically is (without giving away potential spoilers) I had a character that I needed to talk to, and I knew exactly where he normally hangs out. The game actually removed him from the location and he seemingly disappeared until I spoke to some random NPCs first, then the game spawned him back into his usual location with no explanation.
    This didn't really happen in the old games, where if you knew where a character was, you could always talk to him. It's not a game-breaker, but it does seem to be a limitation compared to the first two.
    Overall, I'm still enjoying it a lot. I'm pretty sure I'm at end-game right now, so planning to finish Shenmue III this week!
