Should Akira be the main charater of VF?

He looks a lot like Ryu which is understandable. Because he looks like a typical "Karate guy" he is the posterboy for the Virtua Fighter games. But, should he be?
Why do you think yes or no?

 

i dont know what youre talking about ryu and ken are the main characters of the king of virtua fighters

 

I'd almost want to give it to Kage. Maybe not so much as the 'central' character, but he's pretty easy character to recognize for people who've heard of VF. In a real world situation, I asked one of my classmates if he'd ever heard of the series.


I asked:

"Have you played any of the Virtua Fighter games?"

His response:

"Is that the fighting game with the jittery blue ninja?"

 

I think the main should be Akira, since he looks like Ryu.
That and Jacky isn't tough enough looking as a poster boy for VF
to americans anyway. Maybe twilight fans.

 

I like Pai and Lau. I think they have a good dynamic in the game and it's
brought forth in their (limited) back story. I think Jacky and Sarah have the same dynamic but i also think it's time to dump Sarah's amnesia story. How long is it going to take to remember her brother?

I don't mind Akira. I just wish he had more personality. He looks too much like Ryu to distinguish himself and, you're right, he isn't a lot of fun to play. His move set is atrocious and the learning curve is really high. It'd be worth it to learn him if he was a more effective fighter. He's too slow and lack the power of Wolf or Jeffry.

Let's put him through the ringer. Mark him up with some scars and get him moving a bit more. Either that or pick someone else to be the coverboy. Jacky's a pretty good pick.

 

I assume by 'Main Character' you mean, like, the 'Poster Boy' of VF?
And, well, to answer the question...

This. Pretty much.

With a game like Street Fighter, their poster boys are always really easy characters for beginners to just pick up and play, mash out a few buttons, and pull of some combos/special moves.

I'd chuck on more beginner-friendly characters such as Lau or Pai, maybe even Lei-Fei.

I don't even get why Akira is the poster boy in the first place.
The story (as weak as it is) doesn't even circle around him.
Isn't it mainly about the whole Kage - Dural/Dural is Kage's mother etc etc, thing?

Well based on the story, if anyone follows it, it should be Jacky or Kage.

 

It should definitely either be Goh (scarred face) or Kage (ninja).

 

I think they're best bet is a new character if its western marketing they have in mind. BUUUUUUT we're not on their mind are we.

Well now I am going to get started learning Akira. I'll create a character tonight and get him going in the Dojo and Quest Mode. Maybe I can start learning him.

 

If Akira were to stay the "poster boy", he should be redone... He is simple and plain, and there are still people who think he's a hard character to learn even though moves got changed over the past few VFs... Give him a different, more appealing karate gi or just make his default outfit totally different... I am reminded of KOF:MI's alternate outfits for the characters and how outlandish they were, because some outfits also included an exaggerated skin tone (especially Ralf's alt). Iori's KOFXII outfit was dope imo, and I thought people were gonna cry and ask for the old outfit back, but I don't know and haven't heard of anyone who has (and he's my main)... If Sega revamped Akira like that, I think it might attract people... But then there's still that "learning curve" with him... Only move I see might give cats trouble is +:

There are some people I know really dig Jean because he's "Goh with punches and kicks". I personally think he's a combo between Goh and DOA's Ein (especially in movements). I do think he would be a better replacement for Akira. He's mash friendly, not Akira, he just looks wilder and crazier than Akira. Plus he's a badguy!!! I kinda feel like those tactics worked for Namco when they brought Lars to the Tekken scene... He's masher friendly, wild and crazy, and no need to learn ewgf combos (ergo not a Mishima)... He's not a badguy, but at this point for Tekken, it doesn't matter...

OR---

Sega could just have awesome outfit setup for Akira, and add a bunch of pizazz (fire, other crazy effects, etc) and maybe that would attract someone to buy the game. I personally liked how VF3 had better alternate outfits for the characters. I mean no one expected Kage wearing Michael Jackson pants with a mask that could be knocked off. Lion's outfit was kinda dope too... I mean they could go that route also, and have Akira with a totally different costume A. But then everyone would have to get new "A" costumes...

But its either that, or just make Jean the new posterboy...

 

I think Akiras Body Check was a step in the right direction
I'm going to say something that a lot of people won't agree with. Emphasizing character rivalries in FMV's or promos will do the series a world of good.

Akira vs Jean while very Ryu vs Ken could work.

 

I totally agree with the whole FMV bit.

 

That shoulda been in the game a long time ago.
