It's great to see some of the top players starting to use the side step effectively.
Only about 2 or 3 players are really using it in style.
Under pressure very few people use the side step.

    Heh !

No, I didn't mean I could do side-steps well. I have just noticed a few top players starting to use it to dodge jabs.

Effective side-stepping on VF4 is a sign of a master.

Yeah, I get it. You're making us feel better. Ahh. I feel better already...thanks. Helps to make up for the VF4 drubbing I took today.

i don't understand what you mean by the so called "top players" STARTING to use dodge..... players HAVE BEEN using dodge since fighter's megamix to vf3 to now vf4. effective sidestepping only means you got good reflexes. just like effective throw escaping.

Though I'm generally in agreement with you, Jackybrothas, I personally think effetive sidestepping in VF4 means you know of at least a few times when sidestepping will yield an effective advantage and you use that knowledge.

As for Derrick's comments about sidestepping being a sign of a master player... umm... well, I doubt that it's of any prerequisite to a good player, but effectively using sidesteps can be quite a bonus, but I don't think it yields any sort of overwhelming advantage. Thus, I don't think it's a necessary skill, though I believe it to be a good one.

i stand corrected....... yes a master knows how to utilize every technique to adjust to every opponent's playing style... well not utilize every technique but knows when to sidestep to when to throw, counter, etc... basically a master knows what to do in every situation... im far from being a master but i do a lot of evading (mostly at the right time) in my matches.

Don't talk about side-step in VF3, all you had to do was press the button. VF4 is in a different class.

It is really great to see somebody side-step at the right moment. Not as a mistake, not in panic and not as if by chance. But cool and calculated as if being able to read his opponents mind. Knowing that his opponent is not going to do any of the 4 possible actions that would have made the side-step costly or pointless.

And the highest level is to do it when you have little energy left and you are under attack.

To side-step is to say to your opponent -
    "you are so predictable"

lol...... sure..... for all who are reading this post here's a good way or some ways to defeat your sidestepping opponent...

1)throw out a jab and block. this can work both ways as the opponent may or may not attack right after their sidestep leaving them vulnerable.

2)jab to a throw.... your opponent has probably 50% chance of dodging an anticpated attack. if they dodge without attacking they can be set up for throw.

3)low punch to a throw.... (same as number 2)

4)p,k.... a lot of times this works

    5) use a spin kick either high or low.

anyone want to add to the list?

derrick sidestepping is just like akira's or pai's counter attacks or everyonelse's inashi's/sabaki's.

Tell, me. What's so advanced about dodging an attack? Are you talking in terms of difficulty in performing the move? If that's the case allow me to laugh in your face right now. Anyone who's anyone can dodge an attack when anticipated. I can see your point when it's used under pressure, but again anyone who's anyone can do that if they know their opponent.

"Don't talk about side-step in VF3, all you had to do was press the button. VF4 is in a different class."

I don't understand this comment. In VF4 when you successfully dodge it automatically sets you away from the attack (given you're able to dodge the type of attack). In VF3 you were lucky sometimes if you dodged completely. It's as if VF3 is manual transmission to VF4's automatic with cruise control.

    Different class my ass.

what types of specifics are you referring to please. I have found that Lion VF4 has a Soul Calibur type "8way run" ( 7,7 them move stick down in quarter circle or up and forward. Which is useful when applied properly. Thank you.

i find that crouch dashing appears more effective in vf4 than the side dodge, but that's IMO

the side step can only be used effectivley as a counter side dodge just as your opponent is about to attack as i found out today at the goodge street casino (tues 4 dec: 300pm)

i was using akira, and i found that you can also CD backwards now and i found it a great deal useful as i used the CD back, then forwards into a guard break combo:

    <<guard break>>f,f,k , tap P, DLC, i beat a challenger too....

the evade was better in part 3 though as i'm used to k-stepping by now, but i'm looking forward to mastering part 4's one...

Since I'm not too sure about my DLC, I tend to stick with guardbreak - f,f+K - f,f+KK... not much less damage than the DLC combo, and looks very stylish as well.
