Evading and sidestepping are the same thing, tapping up or down on the joystick as an opponent attacks.

Offensive Move (OM) is when you press up and down with PKG together.

    Please clarify your statement.

well i guess the difference between sidestepping and offensive/defensive moves. my problem is that i'm becoming discuraged from using them during fights because i always get hit while trying to perform either. especially side stepping.

Offensive move (up or down plus PKG): Best used for positioning, or a sneaky attack when you're on the offensive and the opponent is recovering from your attacks.

Defensive move/sidestep (up or down when your opponent attacks): Best used for actually dodging attacks your opponent throws at you when you're on the defensive.

You have to match your opponents' attacks when using the sidestep, so just as you anticipate their move, press up or down to move around them. The timing is a little tight, but keep trying. However, some moves are circular (which means you can't sidestep them) and half-circular (which means you can only sidestep them one direction), so be careful.

    Just practice practice practice!

It is most likely a timing issue. The sidestep wont work "well" unless opponent actually does an attack you can sidestep. Simplest use is after your attack has been blocked and you anticipate an immediate linear counterattack from your opponent. Then you can buffer the sidestep and it should work (except if opponent uses circular moves).

Also, do not press guard after sidestepping, this makes opponent track you better.

Go to dojo, set CPU to block and counter with punch/mid etc. Then hit a decent recovery attack on block and buffer the sidestep.

Does the enemies attack also track you if you do defensive move and then /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif for the defensive move attack?

If so, that might explain why I've been getting stuffed so often when I try to do a defensive move and then attack.

Yes, Pressing any buttons during an evade will cause your opponent to track.

Which is one of those few really stupid illogical things in VF4 and 5. Why on Earth would an opponent track my attack better because I am preparing to guard after the evade. I can see why for gameplay balance, but from a logic point it makes no sense at all.
