Dear sweet God this game is awesome. How can this game be getting only be getting a 77 on metacritic? Most of the complaints boil down to the game being a little difficult in some parts, or the game suffering from minor issues that every 3D platformer since the beginning of time has suffered from. Having actually played through a bit of the game, I can honestly say the complaints are not justified. Sonic Generations is easily a 9/10, and is definitely the best Sonic game since the Genesis days. Sometimes I think people are just so used to Sonic sucking that they don't recognize a good Sonic game when they see it.

Game looks really good. And the soundtrack is absolutely on point. The only reason i haven't already picked this up is that they decided to release it at the same time as everything else. I have too many games in the backlog.

A lot of fun this game, looking forward to the 3DS version which releases on the 22nd. The red star rings can be a real pain to find or at least reach if u know where they are. I learned that there's a secret room under the collectibles room, hold select (ps3) or back (360) for 5 seconds and sonic will go down a hole that appears and u can enter codes to get statues. The codes I had found on gamewinners.com

I preordered this game because I'm a sucker for Sonic games. They hit a low with Sonic 2006, but they started improving a fair bit with Rush on the DS, Unleashed's non Werehog sections were pretty good, Rush Adventure on the DS was rather well done and Colours on the Wii was really enjoyable to me.

Generations however is easily the best Sonic game in so long. The stage selections are pleasantly surprising (Speed Highway and Crisis City) and level design is brilliant. Now, when you die, it's not because of horrendous design, but because you messed up. That said, Crisis City Act 1 does punk you at one point, but you don't unexpectedly die because of it. It's more of a "What? Son of a bitch!" when you realise what's just happened.

Thinking about it, in my opinion, I'm not sure they could have chosen a better range of stages (possibly Egg Fleet from Sonic Heroes instead of Seaside Hill, although the version in Generations is half Seaside Hill, half Ocean Palace). The music remixes like Marly said are definitely on point, and they're filled with some nice touches (like the stage, Seaside Hill's track transitions into Ocean Palace's). The fact that you can play each stage to the default music or one of fifty tracks from past Sonic games is also a pretty neat feature.

There are some music tracks I would liked to have seen (Terminal Velocity from Colours), although we do have custom soundtracks in this day and age, so I can't really complain. That said, blasting through City Escape Act 2 to "What I'm Made Of" is awesome, and I think pretty much every major Sonic game has at least one track in the game (even Knuckles Chaotix and the Saturn version of Sonic 3D have tracks in).

Finally, the redone boss battles are so much fun, especially the rival ones. Not sure which one I like best though.

Okay, that's enough fanboy fapping from me for now.

Wasn't sure if I should pick this up but after reading what you guys have said and the reviews, I think i'm going to have to give it a try.

It looks like a 2D platformer to me. It's just the graphics that are 3D.

Actually, you're right, it is more 2D than not. Classic Sonic's stages are 100% 2D, whereas modern Sonic's stages are about 50/50. It just seemed like finicky controls in the 3D sections were usually what people complained about, and in this game I just didn't think the complaints were justified.

Question, do u need ALL S RANKS ON ALL CHALLENGES in order to get all achievements/trophies? Some challenges are a bit difficult, I just tried one for Planet Wisp and so far it was a little difficult and i know i had trouble with the level when going through it.

I got it mostly wanting the 2D levels but found myself REALLY enjoying the 3D ones as well. I've only just now started collecting the keys and doing challenges but I really like it so far. The nostalgia mixed with some challenging gameplay has me hooked. I got it on PC and its ridiculously gorgeous, too. Some slowdown in some levels but them's the breaks, I'll forgive it lol.

I got it on PC precisely so I wouldn't have to deal with the slowdown and framerate issues of the console versions. Runs smooth as silk on my Radeon HD 5850.

I did experience the game hanging on me a few times, but it never occurred at a bad enough time to piss me off too much. Other than that though, no issues with textures or random glitches, or anything like that.

Edit: Oh and the friends are there, but you mostly only have to see them in cut-scenes between levels, which don't last too long at all. You'll never actually play as anyone but Sonic.

I've fallen through the map once on Green Hill (Where there's a wooden bridge that has a loop and twist in it.) I wasn't going fast enough then got stuck inside it, eventually falling through it to my death. I also encountered a 3D camera problem on the Sanctuary stage where the camera got into a position that messed up my control axis. That's it in terms of glithes/bugs. Haven't seen missing textures that I'm aware of yet.

The only thing I miss (And this is strictly nostalgia) in Generations that was in the old games was rescuing the tiny animals either from the enemies or from the big vaults lol. Though I suppose you are rescuing your friends so it's basically saving animals still haha.

I got stuck on that bridge as well at one point. I managed to boost out of it though. Needed to restart as the S-Rank time was blown.

Seaside Hill Act 1, Challenge 1 and Planet Wisp Act 1, Challenge 5 have got you covered.

I've noticed in the Egg Dragoon boss battle, one of the two ramps side by side will disappear but will reappear as I get closer.
