Actually it isn't the next console but its a multimedia device that uses PS2 technology. Close enough though.

I read the article and I was pissed. Dammit, I want one but I already have a PS2, and I'm not made of money. The 120GB HDD sounds real real sweet...fuggitt!

I'll be pissed if I buy this, then see the PS3 released a year later. The DVD burner and hard drive sound great though. Better start saving now!! /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's going to be a waste of cash if you already have a PS2. Although, it will be nice if you're into piracy. Having such multi-function ability means it will be full of holes to exploit. I would be exceptionally surprised if this monster is under $500 US. Also, the PS3 *IS* suppose to come out 6 months to 1 year after this is released. It has been projected for a 2005 release for quite awhile now.

Does anyone else think it's pretty stupid how the controller ports are at the back?

And yeah, it does suck that you pay like $400(at least!) and then a year later PS3 comes out...

A side note, altho it might be slightly off topic: Remember how when the PS2 first came out in 2000, people said that by the 4th or 5th generation graphics would be dramatically better than at launch?

Is it just me or haven't the graphics really improved all that much - other than maybe GT4 which looks extremely promising, altho it has NO DAMAGE. We're halfway thru the 3rd year and SONY still hasn't optimized online play or even incorporated the HDD properly...What is up with that??? Lack of competition?

Good point Replicant - I was just about to say that it'd be nice for the emulation scene, although the Xbox emulation scene is so well advanced now, I dont' think too many people are going to bother w/ the PS2. Hard to program for, and a technically inferior hardware. People playing hacked PS2 games is another story though. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

DVD burner, HD - what OS is this going to use? Most likely have a simple burning program but DVD copying isn't exactly simple - you would be limited alot by what the software will let you copy.

They have a MIPS Linux for PS2 but I think i would rather let someone else burn DVDs that do it in Linux /versus/images/graemlins/smirk.gif.

Sony's done investment in Linux development, so I think that's the obvious choice. They sure as hell ain't gonna use Windows.

it'll definitely use linux.. it'd be pretty stupid to go with another OS when all the games are already written for linux

    Games written for Linux?
    Thats a new one.
Why do people think console games run on a OS anyway?

PS2 games have always been written on linux, the whole console runs on linux, same way xbox runs on a modded version of windows

Again, where do you guys get this idiocy from?

Console games come with their own drivers, their own routines etcetera on the discs, what the consoles have on board are minimal driver sets for runing memory cards, booting discs etcetera.

[/ QUOTE ]Yes you are correct in saying that it is minimal, but the 'minimal' operating system used in the PS2 is in fact Linux. All discussion related to putting linux on the console itself is related to installing a hard drive and putting on it a fully functional linux distribution that turns the PS2 into a functional desktop computer. While the games run whatever they want, the PS2 main menu, options menus, and disc loading routines are run on linux.

Xbox has been so hackable because people can simply hook up their Xbox's hard drive to their computers and modify the installation of Windows that is sitting right on the hard drive (this is completely true don't try to deny it, i've watched many friends do the same) and then put it back in their Xbox (with modchip).

All modern non-cartridge consoles run some operating system, it's not just a magical machine that runs without any software. the original dreamcast ran off of Windows CE

Do you have any links/documents supporting this? I don't have a clue what OS the PS2 uses but I am sceptical that it uses linux.

And why did you say before:

    [/ QUOTE ]
And now say that it's not the games running on linux but only the console functions?
