Well, SCII came out today. I did give it a whirl. I'm not a diehard for the first one, but give credit where credit is due to Namco -- it's a fun ass game.... leaps and bounds over Tekken.

i'm just wondering if this is going to bomb in the wake of Evolution as Tekken 4 did with VF4. I feal really sorry for them, as they make some fantastic games, and deserve to at least break even.

Off the top of my head, some things that might take a bit of non-hardcore Evo customers away:

1: Very kewl combos -- obviously more surreal than VF4
2: Hooters & Butt cheeks
3: Very kewl costumes
4: Very fantasy-esque settings.

I still think Evolution (and even Ver. C) has better graphics, but that ain't everything in a game.

Comments?

Soul Calibur was arguably one of the better games on Dreamcast. The clarity and details were astounding. The depth of gameplay hit me like a cold cream pie ( or abodonza boobs, if you prefer) when I attended the TTT contest * at X/S game center in NYC ( sponsored by NAMCO). While waiting their respective turns on stage with big screen most of the over two hundred TTT contestants were lined up to play SC at one of the three SC machines or stood there with mouth agape at the supior skills exhibitted by over a dozen hardcore SC fans. ( This was a few weeks after SC came out on DC so you can imagine, I'm sure) Here in the metro NY area we have considerably more hardcore SC players and Tekken than we have VF enthusiasts. We know you are in Japan, so you may find this hard to believe, but it is true. SCII is awaited here with the same baited breath as Evo is in Tokyo. SC attracts the same type of players too. Math and programming dudes and a few woman with similar work skills are attracted to SC. thx for the update. thx also for your Aoi cerebrations. I read your work here and Chanchai's too. I then reread CreeD's and Jirawat's FAQ for Aoi and now have my best VF4 games with Aoi. This despite the fact the she is not my favorite character! /versus/images/icons/crazy.gif Hope you can visit NYC in September for VF4 NYCG3. Mention this gathering to chibita-san the next time you see him. I'm sure he is starving for superior comp and here in NYC is where he will find the heart-pounding fast precise intense battles that produce rivers of sweat. /versus/images/icons/wink.gif /versus/images/icons/grin.gif SEGA should pay for chibita-sans plane fair and hotel and film the gathering too. Everyone in Japan who enjoys VF4 will be seeing amazing battle! /versus/images/icons/cool.gif
Missing NYCG3 is like missing a chance to bed Sharon Stone for the average hetro vascular surgeon in Osaka.

hey nycat,

wouldn't it be kinda cool if they had an 'exchange' program for the best vf players around the world?? say 3 from japan come to the us and 3 from the us go to japan to compete to show them what comp is like in the other countries. it 'could' spark some international rivalry.....

without a doubt. I've been lucky to participate and peep some amazing battles here in NYC. The style of play is slightly different in each region (imho) Not so different as green is to red but more a subtle shading that the enthusiast can appreciate. Hmm, although both are enjoyed chilled on the half shell, blue point oysters are different from say, clams... /versus/images/icons/crazy.gif
The many highly accomplished players in Japan are missing some amazing VF4 battles by not visiting NYC. This is not to say that some of Japan's have not visited NYC and enjoyed being bloodied and battered by NY VF4 players. The same was true with SC and VOOM. VOOM actually brought quite a few top gun players from Japan here on holiday. NYC did rightfully so have a name for itself in the VOOM community. NY has some of the bet VF to be found anywhere. period. /versus/images/icons/smirk.gif Now we just have to find a way to keep the techies away. /versus/images/icons/wink.gif SCII

I think SCII is a nice fighting game, and isn't really anything like VF4, so it's nice to go back and forth. Graphics are beatiful, as is the design. However, I think VF4 has a much more 'techie' engine to it, so people that don't mind a learning curve will like it. But, SCII is still nice.

I know how popular it is in the states -- and rightfully so. I just think VF4 is dominating the arcades in a big way, so we're not going to see a lot of it everywhere. I've only seen Ikaruga in two places for christs' sake!

If you're serious about getting Chibita or Kyasao or any of those guys to NY for a competition (a big one) you'd probably need to sort out a sponsor, as they'd be guests. I'm sure Daioh paid for at least his train fair to come down there. Also want to make sure someone has a descent command of Japanese, as they're not as shy as one would think - shouldn't be hard in NY. I won't be making it for the competition though... I just went to NYC for new years. :)

I enjoy your enthusiasm Cat, but the NY crew is not even close to Japan's standards. We have only about 10 hardcore VF players here. /versus/images/icons/ooo.gif
I'm not including Hiro, he's originally from Japan.

BTW, I talked to Hiro after his 2 month stay at Japan last month. He modestly told me he is "above average" in terms of players in Japan. /versus/images/icons/crazy.gif

Which reminds me, Nelson<ghetto-shun> is in Japan as we speak! I'm sure to get a report from him when he comes back next week.

He will let us know how we stand. /versus/images/icons/ooo.gif

Where's he staying? Is he in the Tokyo area?
Who's Hiro? Is he an exchange student, or does he live in NYC. I actually met a guy at a game center that lived in NY for 3 years -- he was more into graffiti though.

I never asked Nelson what region he was going to be staying. He left on the 4th and told me he would be staying for about 10 days.

Hiro, I believe, travels back and forth from NYC and Japan. Spending most of his time in the states working or going to school. He was a math professor and student at NYU years ago. He now has a stint at Boston college.

He's also probably the best player in the states. He's been playing since the first version came out in Japan. He "trained" all of the NYC crew in VF2 when he arrived. He's only just started reading and posting on this forum.

Pic you and Shag are way wrong /versus/images/icons/frown.gif /versus/images/icons/tongue.gif /versus/images/icons/wink.gif (im not so ho). /versus/images/icons/mad.gif /versus/images/icons/tongue.gif /versus/images/icons/wink.gif I just spoke to someone in Japan yesterday and they said hiro-san is a higher level player than he admits...while there might be a slew of Jacky's at 7 Dan ,etc. there are only a handful of real 9Dan or higher Wolf players. Yesterday ice-9 kicked serious butt in Japan in a 5 on 5 Team Battle. This contest was won btw by an all Aoi team! He defeated a few very good people and I'm told that the gasps were freakn loud from the peeps that witnessed his Ninja ( virtual) skillz /versus/images/icons/grin.gif ! /versus/images/icons/tongue.gif anyway looking forward to playing you guys in VF4 soon... I now get royal treatment at CTF. They bring me a chair when I arrive. I feel like a shitzu sitting in the lap of head concubine. /versus/images/icons/grin.gif

Sorry if I was misleading. While Ice didn't win any in the tournament (he only played two rounds, against pretty strong people), he did do quite well - especially the 2nd time against a high-ranked Jacky. Can't remember, but he was above Champion. It was impressive.

It was before and after the tournament that I saw him beating quite a few people that I play against that are generally strong.

Unfortunately, no. It was a Shibuya Gigo -- a relatively popular arcade, but is down the street from High Tech Land, so I guess it's mainly for intermediate use. There's rarely anyone above 10-dan there, but quite populated with 4-dan thru 8-dan. Perfect for someone like myself.

For this competition though, there were quite a few people. The only match I played against was a Tetsujin Jacky, which I ALMOST beat. Damn, I had him the first two rounds, then he pulversized me.

Maybe Ice9 will give some details. He played against a pretty high ranked Jacky, and did quite well - I think he bought it in the 5th round as I did. /versus/images/icons/frown.gif

He played with a 10-dan Lei Fei that's in my clan. Very good -- amazing that he's only 10-dan. He's better than most of the people you see in Daioh clips.

Re: NYC VF4 palyers level the field

I knew Hiro was being modest, but the matter of fact is that no one else in NYC<heck, all of USA> can match up well against Japan's best. /versus/images/icons/crazy.gif

We are levels below Hiro's skill. And I can't even fathom playing someone better than Hiro but they ARE. In Japan of course. /versus/images/icons/wink.gif

Anyway, we need to do battle one of these days. /versus/images/icons/smile.gif
I'll try to go to sleep extra early one Friday to meet you early Saturday at CF. I know you have family and all, but you should come on Fridays nights for VF action. Pedro and I had some great matches last week /versus/images/icons/ooo.gif

Oh yeah, to pertain to the original thread, Soul Calibur 2 should arrive at CF this week /versus/images/icons/grin.gif
