Sorry if this topic has been done before or if it is not allowed. But I wanted to ask why is it people hated SF3? Why did they hate the newer, fresher characters? Why did they hate the parry system? I never played the original SF2 I started with the Alpha Series which I thought was great at the time. Then my real love for SF began with SF3 3rd Strike (I never got to play the original SF3 or Second Impact).

However now that SF4 is out it seems the hate for SF3 has dramatically increased. Whenever someone mentions putting in a SF3 Character like Elena, Dudley, Ibuki, Q etc. they are immediately met with harsh words ya know?

I have tried to like SF4 I really have but for some reason I can't help but feel like I'm playing a downgrade. Sure the presentation is nice and you got flash but it just doesn't have the appeal to me like SF3 did. I miss the awesome soundtrack, the new characters, the fighting engine, the sprites, air blocking, parrying and being able to choose a super before the match.

Anyway I'm done rambling. Does anyone feel the same way here or am I the only one who feels this way?

If you look at it with the mindset that 3S wasn't really a SF, and separate the two, it'll be a lot easier lol.

I was all geared up to write why it is some hate on the parry system, and why SF3 (from the first to Double Impact) weren't well accepted initially in the states, but... I've had this conversation too often and it's on countless message boards now. Not mocking your post, it's valid and well written, but this topic is a dead horse.

It's best to like what you like, and play what you like. Can't go wrong with that. 3S is what got me into competitive gaming, and I don't really like it much at all anymore (Even though I really like the cast). I don't knock people who still like it, but it does bug me when 3S heads bash ST or SF4.

The game plays differently from SF4 that doesn't make it a better version of a game really to me. I see each SF game as different version of the same thing and I like them all about the same, they all have good and bad things associated with them we can't help that. SF4 has more of old school style for the most part, while SF3 has more of a fresher, newer look to it.

For the most part they were all equal as far as I am concerned and I don't feel it is fair to compare them and grade them based on their differences because they don't play the same way it is like comparing day to night. If they played in a remotely simular style I would try to compare them but it can't be done now. If you prefer 3S that is up to you, same goes to those that prefer SF4 just enjoy the games you play that is all we should care about, not which one is better.

It's much easier to understand why people hated on SF3 if you've went through the growth from NW and 2nd impact before 3s. I didn't play competively back when they were coming out but I was an arcade head and got my chance to play these games there. I was okay with NW and was happy with 2nd impact brining EX moves. But when 3s came out it just overshadowed the first two with greatly improved graphics and all the characters I always wanted to be in the game that weren't.

I couldn't tell you technically why people hated the 1st two games so much. Resistance to change I suppose.

The reason alot of folks didn't dig SFIII was because fans were already digging that crap know as SFA3. The parry system, somehow, was to difficult to understand for some. The game was not meant for the casual SF fan. Krsjin, stated"it didn't play like a SF game" And that's true in a way. Fireball traps and zoning was basically out the window. Something SF is know for.

SFIII, IMHO needed the parry system to be fix. like for example. You shouldn't be able to parry projectile moves or grabs(Alex, Ibuki and Hugo have launching grabs that could be parry)And of course Chun and Ken super arts. SFIII is a amazing and deep game that could of evolved beyond the GG series in depth. The only game I see bringing that level of depth right now is King Of Fighters XII. I see that game going beyond the GG series with the system they have in place. Same could be said about BlazBlue.

I know next to nothing about either KOFXII game mechanics or BB. Since BB is made by same dudes who made GG i'm expecting an evolution upon the theory that built the GG franchise so it's going to be a great game. Granted I played BB but it's just too much to pick up on an arcade machine without knowing anything about it b4 hand.

I've never liked any KOF game I've bought that much[/i}, I don't know why, it just didn't appeal to me for very long. I remember playing a much older KOF at the "Interskate 91" <-- a local roller skating rink that used to be in a mall near me, and I played a lot of Mark of the Wolves. I have heard that KOFXII is a pretty good game and it's popular in Japanese arcades...

I think I always felt like the characters in the previous games weren't fleshed out too well, but I didn't play it for very long before I moved on.

Has anyone here played KOFXII??? Is anyone here an big KOF fan? Just wondering what makes it a special fighting game? Believe me, I WANT it to be a good game because I LOVE fighting games, but I hesitate to get too excited over KOF due to my past impressions of the series...

I've only liked 1 of the KoF games and that's the one K' was introduced. God he's so cool.

My main problem with the series is the graphics made my eyes bleed with it's crzy pixilation.

I'd like someone to explain to me too what makes the KoF series so technically great because I don't really see it either. I'd like to aswell, just don't. The characters all have so much style that I can understand if that's what draws people in.

I don't really see the depth of KOF I guess... Is it that there's a lot of characters? Too many characters and you'll probably just ruin the balance. There's a happy "VF" medium /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I fail to understand how people failed to understand parries in SF3.

Shame on you!!!! You Like MK Vs DC and not KOF?

I can even begin to Explain what make KOF so Good Well at least 98 and 2002. The series character has more style than SF's. Atleast they change character wardrobes in each new version lol!
Its not a Noob friendly game either.

I want to play KOF in hopes that Vanessa's going to be in it, because to me she's like the coolest boxing character in any fighting game. Boo on Boxer, Dudley, and Steve Fox.

I guess it wasn't that intuitive for people to press forward at the right time, as far as the parry system? Or people just didn't like taking risks?

LOL!!! I don't like MK vs DC anymore... I swear I only played for a week and a half... I don't even own it anymore, but I deserve that, fair enough /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif .

I think had KOF '98 on PS1 or PS2, but I never really got into it, I don't even know why. But I don't remember liking the older one at the rollerskating rink either.

Back then, the fighting games I remember from that period are: SF2, VF1 or 2, MK1 or 2, World Heroes!!! (if you remember this Neo Geo game you are cool...) SamSho, Fighter's History (you are cool if you remember this too) and later, the only game I played at tournament level ever was Saturday Night Slam Masters (has to be one of my favorite games of all time!) Biff and Gunlock FTW!!!

EDIT: now that I think about it, I was playing Fatal Fury at the rollerskating rink!!!

2nd EDIT: KOFXII looks like it has some stylish graphics. Release date is listed as July 31st 2009...

You know what, to the folks that never touch a "SNK" game in their life, go to Wikipedia, and look up their franchises to see what SNK did for the fighting game genre as a whole. Jesus Christ, Gernbergs and Tricky, pick up the KOF Orichi collection for the PS2(KOF 95-98)And sit down with the game and see why the engine is good. What a bunch of slackers.

I can't even explain how well you nailed it (for me at least)! Especially in regards to the parrying in SF3. The most intense mind games in my experience have been with this game, mostly due to the parrying system.
I'm hoping dearly that the King will bring some of that back...cause SF4 (although fun) didn't quite do it for me so far /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

Just curious (I don't know much about 2d fighter system, I just like to play them), do most people see the SF3 parrying system adding to the mind game of SF3 or more about good reflex/execution?

I believe it is over 90% mind game. I.e. there is no way you can see if someone pressed say 'down+MK' instead of 'neutral+MK' (or throw) fast enough to parry neutral or down (or break the throw)...you have to guess and parry accordingly. Study your opponent, know his character's best options in the context of different situations and you minimize your risk! Educated guessing /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
This is obviously just one part of the game...reflexes are a big part of it also...as I would think stands true for most fighting games
