Techniques for learning a character

Howdy, new to the forum, I'm not a total newbie to the genre, played a bit of the DOA series and other fighters previously.

Does anyone have any tips on the best way to learn a characters moves? Previously I would just go through lists and try and commit pretty much everything to memory. I'm sure there are better ways than this so I'd like to hear what others do when learning a new character?

Do people group moves together into scenarios when they would use them? i.e small advantage/large advantage/punishment etc.?

Also, do you use everything or are some moves just not worth bothering with?

    Any advice welcome

    Thanks

    Dom

Go to command training and run through your characters moves as much as you can to get them in your head. Then after that practice your ass off.

FWIW, how I approach learning a character:

Jab - what strings do you have after a jab, for punishment or neutral situations. If you have mids and lows, mix them up.

Elbow - what's your 14 frame mid attack, for small advantage; what can you do after it hits or is blocked.

Knee - what's your slower, big launcher, for large advantage; what combo works on most characters.

Throw - what's your best throw, for mixing in with the above.

I personally think keeping it simple helps. There are lots of moves that are useless or only useful in very specific situations.

    Thanks chaps,

This is what I need to be thinking, keeping it simple and weeding out the good stuff. It's tempting to try and learn absolutely everything, which is so overwhelming.

While learning your character's moves, the core basic attacks in VF are what KOD mentioned: jab, elbow, throw, knee/launcher.

Since VF4/VF5 though, I would also add: half-circular attacks (preferably fast with low disadvantage on block). Jab, elbow, throw, knee are good basics but limits you (perhaps too much) to throwing people that evade. The problem with half-circular attacks is that some characters like Lau and Akira are severely limited on these (but this would force you to know your throw game well).

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif is a big staple for most characters. It's your go-to move when you have a guaranteed attack (when you block your opponent's big attack). Learning what you can do after your character's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif helps greatly. Back to what KOD was saying though, it's important to know what options you have from your jab because it's usually your fastest attack.

But in the end, you are responsible for knowing your characters' moveslist... So I just focus on one character at a time, I go through command training maybe once or twice a day with a certain character, and then I play Quest Mode for awhile with that character and try to mess with a new subset of moves each day.

I just want to throw in that with VFDC's new command lists you're able to use the filtering to find out answers to questions like:

What are my most disadvantaged moves on guard?

What moves give me the most advantage?

    What's the most damaging attack?

    etc.

Myke's done a great job with this and I see potential in it being put to great use. It only takes me 5 to 10 minutes looking at a command list to get the basics for character on paper. The next step would be actual application of said character.

Man, I actually had no idea those movelists could do that till you mentioned that. Such a nice feature.

    What Sebo did:

    1. Pick a character, go through movelist in the game
    2. Go to dojo and mess around, find what staggers, crumples on side hit, what launches, what crushes highs, etc.
    3. Go to VFDC, look at command list, print it out.
    A. Find poke attacks, Jabs, elbows, learn the frames
    B. Find half-circulars, memorize which way they cover, learn the frames
    C. Find Your launchers, look at the frames
    D. Look through all moves and write down lists, "Which ones to /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif on block, etc"
    4. Learn combos
    5. Find competition and test things out
    6. Fail
    7. Go back to practice, watch youtube vids, learn something new
    8. Repeat 5-7 for a while
    9. Not there yet

    my technique..

    Dojo - find new moves
    Quest - practice new moves
    Player - try new moves
    Ranked - start over..

rinse repeat for a few weeks and you might feel like yer learning something..

    Thanks, some good advice.

I've been playing with the move list filter (filtering out any moves that are really bad on guard etc) and sorting in order of exe to find the quickest moves and go from there. Really cool feature. Multiple filters would be nicer still /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Few suggestions, I think the sort would work better if the multihit moves had exe listed as te execution of the first move, that way they would sort properly (all '-' go to the top otherwise)

Noticed there's a mistake in the legend aswell, it says under dmg that for multihit moves the damage listed is the total, which it doesn't appear to be.
