yo. got t5, and im having a hard time getting used to this since ive been playing vf staright for bout 2- 2 1/2 years.

can anybody gimme a few game mechanices tips for this?
im having trouble in many places such as when to do a throw and trying to get it connect ( should have had the idea of guranteed throws....)
others problems include the timing of combos, they dont exactly seem to be instantaneous like VF, instead it like say doing a four button combo on the pad and most of the times my command misses and nothing happens to the char on screen. not like VF where you can like buffer shit.

any help would be appreciated. plz no jokes bout my skill in tekken, yea i kno its shit, but im still tings with vf at least...............

tekken and VF are completely different beasts so its no wonder you're having problems.

Honestly, I would say check out www.tekkenzaibatsu.com and look at the system guides for T4 and TTT as they both have elements that are incorporated into Tekken 5. In the General Strats section under T5 there are several threads that cover movement and survival arts (techs and such); sadly, nothing is stickied so its hard to get info without dredging. I just came upon this thread that covers most basics and is being added to so it might be of help.

your buffering problem can be handled by going into training mode and selecting the option that allows you to see (by color) when your character has recovered and able to attack or move. the system can be problematic for me only when playing a mishima character, otherwise I don't have many issues with the lack of buffering.

I'd write more things of use in this thread but I'm newish (played t1-t3 but less than casually) to tekken myself.

    First off, who's your character?
Secondly use throws any time really, there are guaranteed throw situations. Also normal throws with 1+3 or 2+4 can have extended reach with a f+ input, but are slightly slower and have a longer window for being escaped.
For combos with jabs practice doing dashing and jabs, everyone's got different recover for jabs and ranges, most can do at least 4 jabs in a combo depending on the launcher.
Learn how to space well because the side stepping isn't as clean as VF and you might find your self overwhelmed sometimes when defending.

    Anyways..

The best character's to start with in Tekken 5 are Bryan and Steve. High damage combo's with and without walls, great pokes, punch reversals, the list goes on. Defo check Zaibatsu, check the character thread's out.

Other great character's are Nina (disgusting Oki now she has UF+1 to end combo's with), Law (A turtling law is a major pain in the ass) and Wang. Wang is so improved from Tag it's scary. Ridiculously overpowered juggles, sick oki, evil low mid game and a reversal and a parry!

I better get practising on Tekken 5 for the final in April!

Hmm, I take it Paul is simple but not that powerful? I saw maybe one Paul my entire trip in Japan. Most of the Tekken players there were Heihachi, Kazuya, Jin, Steve, Nina. Heihachi being the most well represented at high ranks BY FAR.

Jeff, how were the Jins in Japan? I've been asking around (since I am JIN fan, heh) word is he's actually, normal...compared to steves n co.

Just to clarify, I am not asking abt tier. More like, how is he played in Japan?

I've been watching quite a bit of Korean TK5 vids, not alot of Japanese TK5 vids at all.

Korean steves (nin n MDJ)....jesusly goooooooood!

Ironically my main character is Paul, but I've been testing some of his moves on guard vs other characters and there is just too much free damage against him for him to be considered top tier, although he will always be my favourite, even though I'm training with Bryan much more now.

Totally forget about Heihachi as well, his 2,2, 1+2 ff+2 skank combo makes him the best mishima tier wise (at least at this early stage). I still think T5 is about other character's as opposed to Mishima's like it was in previous tekkens though.

yea there are a couple of good chars in this like lee, you gotta love his style man. but its just that sometimes the gameplay fucking annyos me. its not like VF where theres always ways around things. e.g when fighting steve, aw man that guy is sooo imbalanced. i have trouble just trying to block and counter but he just beats me to it all the time. and wtf is with these ten hit combos? while opponent is executing them, you cant hardly do anything at point blank range apart from block high and low. trying to counter during a ten hit combo so far has been a suicide option.

only been 2 days since i got this and im already pissed off with it. looks like its time to play vf again ...................

Yeah, Steve is somewhat overpowered in T5 but you should see Jin in T4!! (Jin was totally changed from Tag to 4 for some reason and both Heihachi and Kazuya were also raped). In fact Jin and Steve are (arguably) by far the best chars in T4, starnge that they went and made Steve even better!

(btw Devil Jin (if you have him unlocked) = Tag Jin (old Jin) + Tag Devil...probably done so's not upset the old Jin players as T4 and T5 Jin is totally different to the Mishimas of old.

Thing with 10 strings is that almost no real player will use them that much...in fact I've never seen anyone try them in our arcade or in our home meets. A few chars have nice 5/6 flurries of moves (Jin and Kaz for example) and they can be useful but I think for 10 strings, most players I know of leave them alone.

The gameplay can annoy me sometimes too...if you play an experinced player they can destroy you in a few seconds if you tech roll the wrong way or get caught near a wall etc but in VF there's far less chance of stuff like that happening (for example, I was playing some Lee player the other day, got floated by him, half my life went and as I landed, went to tech roll forward and got hit by a guaranteed launcher (so he says) into the wall and killed with some mad combo /versus/images/graemlins/mad.gif)

If you really want to get into Tekken, I'd probably recomend printing off move lists of chars you like over at Zaibatsu, get a copy of the legend so you can understand it and read some of the threads over there for tips.

Or maybe even start playing Tag too since they have frames, movelists and billions of combos put up for all the chars and it'll "get you into" the style and differences between Tekken and VF.

Well, that is if you really want to get into Tekken. /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The Devil Within doesn't work on a lot of people's I know as well (mine included). Arcade History rarely work's on mine as well (just stay's on a black screen!). Apparently there is a lot of glitches in the game. Wonder if they'll be removed for the PAL release?

well james, my ps2 is a version 5 and i use hdadvance to play tf and everything works. t1-t3 works. the only problem ive encountered is that after level 1 on devil within it crashes but that modes novelty wears off after a while.
also another problem was when i was transfering it from dvd to my hard drive on the ps2. it took nearly 50 mins instead of 10-15 mins cuz of reading errors. but after that, like i sed everything works cept devil within.

adey, t5s fun and all that but i was playing it with sum friends and after taking a beating i put on vf to 'reassert' my superiority but for the first few matches i played like i was just fresh to vf. it passed and after i killed them wit ma vaneessa. ii was holding back instead of pressing the guard button in vf. this is the reason i dont play other fighting games seriously as it fucks up my VF reflexes.ill stick to vf.

Well if you got read errors its obviously that it didn't copy everything properly. Get a clean Dvd-rw and try again /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

nah i get alot of read errors. its cuz i think the hdadvance prog accelerates waaay too fast to 1600kbs and then bumps back all the way to 333kb sppeds for the duration of the transfer. either way, the game normally works fine. plus i cant be bothered with devil within. methinks tis a cheap copy of shinobi without a ninja. and without a ninja, it means nothing to me...........

I only play tekken nowaday's cos there's a big following in Manchester compared to the dry wilderness that is VF ( /versus/images/graemlins/confused.gif). I Still prefer VF hugely compared to the 'popcorn' style Tekken series. As an example, when I come to London for the T5 Final, I will probably play VF more than Tekken!

If you're still interested in getting into T5, there's a wealth of info on these pages and links:

    http://www.tekkenzaibatsu.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=54

As for switching games, yeah it feels strange at first but the more you do it, the less strange it'll feel. Some meets at mine in the passed have gone thru VF, SC2, Tekken Tag/4/5, GGX2R and Hyper SF all in one session!

It just takes a little time, at first, to get used to the "big" switch in styles.

heh. I got Tekken 5 as soon as it came out, as I've been playing Tekken since the first came out in arcades. but even then, I've been playing a lot of VF4: Evo lately, so I was playing as Lee, who's long been my favourite character, and I was pressing square, while trying to block. I was all "gah, why are you punching?!" blah.
T5 is great, though. So fun, until you've beat story mode with every character. Arcade mode is a very primitive version of VF4's Kumite/Quest mode, and once you stop getting 100,000 G a pop for completing story mode, it takes to goddamned long to earn the 500,000 G to get the new outfits.
I love prettying up my LeeLee, though. Well.. prettier than he already is. <3
Black vest + hair extensions + purple pants & gloves + guitar = love.
