Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution. Virtua Fighter is my favorite fighting game series because of the realism in which the fights take place, the depth of strategy and skill envolved, and the uniqueness of every character.

Of all the 3D fighting games Virtua Fighter seems to have the most number of usable moves per character. No move seems to be there for show or is impractable too use in a fight. The characters are all very interesting as well, Wolf has more throws than any other character in a 3D fighter, Aoi is unlike any other character with her massive amounts of reversals and an auto-parry stance, and Lei Fei excells in Sabakis (an attack that deflects an incoming attack) while utilizing the best stance system I've ever seen.

It seems that in Virtua Fighter you must play each character with a different state of mind and think of the fight in a different way to be successful. For instance, when playing Goh(a new character who utilizes Judo) you must try to force your opponent into a crouching position, grab them, or knock them too the ground in order to begin using his super powerful throw combos. playing with such a style forces you to think about how you go about a fight differently. You need to relearn how to play with each character because the fighting styles are so unique.

But my favorite thing about VF4 is that it doesn't reward button mashing(like a certain namco game), instead you must time your attacks correctly to be victorious.

My favorite characters are, in order of most to least favorite:

Wolf- he is a very fast and powerful character. he has punishing long range, unblockable moves as well as the greatest variety of the most powerful throws in the game. Wolf's throws are awe inspiring. No other character has such baddass throws period.

Akira- an extremely fast, extremely powerful, combo character who can also reverse and throw very well. He also happens to be the hardest character to play in VF4 and perhaps the hardest character in any game.

Lau- my first character I played and I still love him. Lau is the master of juggling(knocking an opponent helplessly into the air and doing a combo on them). He is the fastest character in the game and is a straightforward no-nonsense fighter.

Aoi- the defensive master. with a reversal for every attack, an auto-parry stance, super fast striking attacks, and an awsome throwing game Aoi is the embodiment of defensive fighting. I have never seen another game with a character like her.

because it's balanced and takes an immense amount of skill to succeed.

Because Vanessa has one hell of a [6][6][K], and it has Pai.

If I want to win by using technique, analyzing the opponent and utilizing strategy, I'll play VF.

If I'm lazy and want to win by exploiting glitches, I'll play SC2.

So which I prefer depends entirely how I feel like winning.

I got this short review from www.bloodsports.net, the 20 best fightings games. VF4 was #5 on the list. I disagree. Heres the review.

"Virtua Fighter was originally created by Sega in 1993, and it virtually created 3D fighting games overnight. Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution was released in 2003, and it virtually perfected 3D fighting games overnight. Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution was just a small update to the already superb Virtua Fighter 4, adding a couple of new characters, a couple of new gameplay modes and more balanced gameplay. And this was truly a masterpiece. Every character was portrayed down to the finest detail, and the battle arenas had the same kind of attention given to them. It’s quite astonishing really when you see all the work that had gone into it and you think about it for just a short while. As far as the gameplay front was concerned, it cut the butter like a hot knife. Each character boasted an incredible moveset, and in the time it could take you to learn everything in one game, you would only be able to master one character in VF4: Evolution. The game was balanced perfectly, each character had their own distinct style of fighting and the whole presentation of the game was very lifelike, which has been the main drawcard of the series for so long and why it’s called Virtua Fighter after all. It’s virtually real. You won’t find any outrages combos, super moves or projectiles here, just the damn best gameplay you could ask for out of a 3D martial arts fighter in 2003. No other word describes Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution but ‘Superb’."

Yeah, you're right. A certain Namco game doesnt either reward button mashing.

    Then again, everything is relative.

well when you've got idiots like this:

"THAT..WAS...GAY!....super smash should not be at 16. that game is way better than all of those games. in my opinion this is how it should be.

    1. super smash
    2. soul caliber 2
    3. mortal kombat:deadly alliance
    4. marvel vs capcom 2
    5. tekken tag tournement
    6. soul caliber 1
    7. mortal combat
    8. street fighter
and the rest suck! compared to these^^^"

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out with morons like this on the forum, the list is null and void.

Anyone who thinks any 3D fighter is better than virtua fighter, truly needs to think about what they mean by better. Because where i come from, better means deeper, more complex, and skill = time invested.

The only game that can actually rival it is street fighter 2.

The only way MK2 is better than VF is in the hillarious 1 player experience, no one in the arcade challenged seriously at that cause it was soo bugged, everyone played 1 player and exploited the system /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif

www.blood-sports.net is full of nothing but scrubs that have no idea there is a difference between VF and MK.

One of my online friends tried to send me a link to that list saying that it's proof that MK and whatever else they had higher on that list is better than VF. Because of that list I can never take that site serious. I guess some people believe everything they read on the net.

Mortal Kombat 2 doesn't even qualify as a competetive fighter. getting good at MK2 means being able to do Sub-Zero's fatality. I consider it more of a party game for talentless people to play with equaly talentless players.

Funny, I thought VF was just about who could do Akira's SPoD faster and more often in a match, and the rest is the same. :-\

personally, when i play akira, i never do spod, since i play methodical x infinity, and pretty much the only situation it's guaranteed, is [2_][6][P] against the wall. In pretty much every other situation a shoulder ram or yoho is much more damage rewarding, with a similar risk.

I think you should watch top Akiras play more. The Spod can be used in a lot more situations than that.

Well Kimble, those situations are where SPoD isn't the best response on paper, you know /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Of course, only about 40% of the game is played on paper anyways, I think

Spod is a high risk high return move imo. It's not really a move you use only when it's guaranteed. With good prediction that move can easily turn the match around.

with good prediction a shoulder ram is better. and like i said, up against a wall, you're best option is single palm.

I think saying Spod can be replaced by the shoulder ram is a bit funny. They both have different uses. In VF you have to be flexible and choose the best option for the situation.
