Only two players in Japan have the rank of 天翔神 (Tenshoushin) - Itoshun (BR) and Joseph (AK). Tenshoushin is roughly translated as "Heavenly Soaring God." Itoshun was the first person to receive this rank by fighting against Joseph during a "Flame God" ranking battle in late 2011. Joseph got promoted to the Tenshoushin rank last month. Now both players will face each other again to determine who is the best! Who will get demoted!?

Check out the Newton Ooyama ustream archive video for this highly anticipated match (starts ~12min30s into video)! Ohsu Akira and Kamaage are the commentators. The match occurred at the end of the 2012 Tokyo Bay Area Cup, Volume 3 team tournament. Don't have time to watch the video and only want the results? Click on this news headline for the spoiler!

Just curious but do you know if there is a higher rank thank Tenshoushin? And if so, how come he didn't rank up?

Rodney - I don't know if there is a rank above Tenshoushin (trying to find out though). I think for the really high ranks, you can only get promoted by fighting people with the same exact rank (meaning it is extremely difficult to keep and maintain high ranks).

So the only way to get promoted to Tenshoushin from the "Flame God" Rank is to rank up against fellow "Flame God" Rank players (which also have very limited number, that constantly fluctuates). Likewise, to get promoted to "Flame God" Rank from the "Thunder God" Rank, the player must rank up against fellow "Thunder God" Rank players (which is also a limited number of players, that constantly fluctuates).

Both Chibita and Fuudo currently do not have any of the above listed titles which just indicates the level of difficulty it is to reach it and also to maintain it.

Edit: Players that I have seen reach the "God of Flames" rank includes Keisuta (SH), Tomarion (LI), Anaguma (JA), Yatsuki (JA), Fuudo (SH), and Buster (Basutaa~, LI).

There are more players reaching the "God of Thunder" Ranks including Koedo (JN), Shiwa (PA), Mukku (TA), Kanzen Nitaku (WO), Homestay Akira (AK), Tane (AK), and Puuta (JN). They are still very hard to come by and maintain.

According to Kamaage, Tenshoushin is the highest rank possible. Unlike previous versions of the VF5 game, you can still be demoted at the highest rank; however, at the highest ranks (the "god" ranks) the ranking bar meter can only be affected by players of same exact rank as you.

In many ways, the rankings in VF5FS seems to favor something like a "world boxing champion fight" system. Itoshun is the reigning and defending Tenshoushin while Joseph is the Tenshoushin challenger. There can only be one! :p

The lack of #s at this rank has a direct correlation with the lack of players overall. The only people left playing in Japan are the absolute diehard VF players who would play anything with the VF label on it. (Do realize it's been 6 years since the first iteration of VF5) Many famous players in Tokyo have migrated to SCV.

Chibita and Fuudo don't play regularly anymore, they only turn up for events to hang out with old heads or do a paid event for Sega. Chibita only started to warm up for KSVI 3 weeks before the tourney and has stopped seriously playing again after winning the tourney.

Shou - numbers please? Correlation is not necessarily causal. Not doubting the number of VF players have decreased, but are you sure it is decreased number of players or an increase difficulty in maintaining high ranks as the main cause for the low number of highly ranked players? Your post appears to heavily imply one thing, but I see information that suggest differently.

      Itoshun's W/L ratio is insane!
