The Karate Kid

I figure there are equal parts interest and cynicism for this movie here and since no one has talked about it, I will.

If you are interested, you should probably take the plunge and do your best to catch it in a theatre full of 10 year olds. The joy and cheers in that environment might take you back a little to when you weren't so damned cynical and make you gloss over some of the movie's imperfections.

If you are a cynic, you can post about how the movie is commercial schlock produced by the lead actor's father who has largely specialized in commercial schlock and miss out on a lovingly created, occasionally shot-for-shot remake of a classic film.

There are subtle but significant differences with the original, though. In particular, Jackie Chan's portrayal of Mr. Han is two or three shades darker than Pat Morita's Mr. Miyagi. Without giving too much away I'll just say that if you don't think Jackie Chan can emote, perhaps you haven't considered that a man who was sold by his parents to the circus at a very young age has a substantial well of emotional pain from which to draw.

I venture further into spoiler land after this, so I'll give up the mike. Any takers?

I like how it's called The 'Karate' Kid.

Has anyone noticed the absense of actual karate in this flick?

 

^They did have it as The Kung-Fu Kid as the working title for awhile, but in polls they took or something, people kept voting for Karate Kid instead. So you know.

But yeah I'm actually amped to see the movie, and have been for some time so your first post has me happy Sanjuro. Look forward to seeing it.

 

There's a lack of Karate in the original Karate kid movie as well.

I'm a big fan of Jackie's so I'll see it on his merit. Seen a few clips that gave me a laugh so I know I'll be entertained.

 

I though this movie was great! and shooting it in china was even better for it,i mean the kid moves to china,in a new place where he is differnt from others so i have to give this movie 5 stars

The fact that it has Riley Freeman in it is enough to intrigue me.

Also, what other martial arts kids could they have? I personally like "The Krav Maga Kid" or "The Sumo Kid".
