Thoughts on MK5...

The series pretty much revolutionized fighting games as we know them now, but after MK2, I think most people can agree that it went straight downhill. After seeing the screens for MK5 and reading some of the descriptions, I'm hopeful that the new version will bring some integrity back to the MK games. Not to mention the fact that the sheer curiosity about what fatalities will look like in 3D is enough to want to play the game at least once. Thoughts?

Please enlighten us as to how MK revolutionised the fighting game genre.
Oh and I couldve sworn that MK4 was polygonal as well.

I recall MK4 being a polygonal game that played like a 2D, and sucking some major eggs (like much of the series). I recall doing that Scorpion infinite all day. Lame-o.

I hear that MK5 is skipping the arcade scene. This basically means that the game will never go through a serious testing phase- meaning, bugs and imbalances galore. I can't say that I have much hopes for MK5.

Exactly. You play it once, see the fatalities, and then move on.

Is that for the gamecube, ps2 or xbox version of the date you mentioned? or are all three being simultaneously released?

Good question, how exactly did MK revolutionize the fighting genre?

I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel and the only reason i can think of is that MK made the fighting genre more serious - added violence and less cartoonish characters.

I played MK and MKII to death, but I think MK5 might be kinda cheesy, especially when it takes only one button to change your stance/style - it might be button masher galore. Maybe they should make it harder, but obviously I cant know till i've actually played it.

I AM willing to give this title one last shot, before abandoning all hope in the series tho, so Ed Boon, you better make it worth our time!!!!

I'm a pretty big MK fan, and so far MK5 looks disapointing. First, the charecters just look horrible, they're extremely bulky and really "american" looking, nothing like the smooth and realistic charecters in VF. Also, the gameplay looks entirely too fast to be able to intelligently play using the different fighting styles and choosing which one to use in a situation, and the weapons will propably be very easy to win with as they look overpowered. I saw a video where scorpion could do a special move where fire would rise from the ground under the oppenent and damage them from far distances unless they were blocking (and it was an extremely quick executing move), so its gonna be hard to stay alive unless you jump around alot and do as many attacks as you can, nothing like the intricate mind games found in VF. MK5 is gonna have almost no strategy too it at all, but I do think it might be fun to just casualy play every once in a while, and I also have always loved the charecters in MK and i find the fatalities appealing.

It revolutionized the fighting game genre more from a standpoint of style than anything else. The original game was the most realistic fighting game in its time. The cinematic, mysterious feel of the game and the shocking and unforgivingly brutal finishing moves made fighting-genre fans out of just about every gamer at the time. It had such an impact on the mass market that they made a movie out of it. Now, maybe it's not your favorite fighting game, but you would appear foolish to underplay it's significance to the genre.

I too have played the crap out of the Mk series, even the dreaded 3d mk which really sucks. But hopefully mk5 will be a decent fighter, but I'm not putting all hope on it since boon has disapointed me before. /versus/images/icons/confused.gif

SubZero does look pretty cool - but I hope you realize that he wont actually look that good in the game. ITs just like a publicity pic of him. There's no way the actual game character is gonna be that detailed so dont be fooled by that pic.

i think the vf4 character models are more detailed than that, but that sub zero looks pretty cool.
